PS- I have the exact same situation with the unhealthy family habits back at my parents' and the super healthy boyfriend. As much as I love them, it really does help to get that breath of fresh air and develop your own new healthy eating and shopping habits :) GOOD LUCK!!

I have recently begun my epic journey of weightloss and am amazed at how much protein you should ideally be consuming if you are planning to lose weight and increase your fitness. I have been using "Myofusion" protein powder to supplement my needs (you should have .5 to 1g of protein for every pound of weight you carry per day!...ideally). The greatest thing about this protein supplement is that it is low in calories and carbs while being very high in protein. As a girl who doesn't eat much meat herself, I know it can be hard to get your recommended protein without a TON of additional carbs and calories....anyways, I thought I'd share the tip! It's really helping me stay on track and the chocolate flavor is delicious!!! All the best! I'll be thinking of you while I'm on my own journey as well :)

I completely agree...it just makes sense when having a garden usually means you have so much to compost anyways and compost is so much richer than the chemicals anyways. Thank you!

What a wonderful initiative! I was browsing the website and am very impressed with the program. I will certainly contact them if I need some more pointers over my planning process, thank you!

we live in Vancouver, Canada... I think the assumption is that at some point they will use the gardening skills I teach them in their youth for something like that...ps- how does one "escape" from an "increasingly disconnected" existence by getting high? Is that not counter-productive?

That would be an interesting lesson to create...I'll have to admit, I am from Vancouver, BC, so when I read your comment to two of my friends they chuckled and said "hydroponics", "native plants"...sounds "lucrative". Anyways, I would be interested in hearing more about how you integrated hydroponics into your classroom!! Does a sprouting machine count? I have one of those.

awesome movie! I haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing. I sincerely hope it does not end in a massive Wal-Mart...

WOW! Thank you for your thorough reply! I really appreciate the thought you have put into it. I am in Vancouver, BC, so we have relatively mild winters and summers, but although we have rainy rain winters we have plenty of sun in the summer. I love the idea of visiting a community garden that is in full swing, as well as the produce professionals. I was thinking something along the same lines as well! There is a community garden not too far from the school campus as well as an organic food store! I should probably address your commentary on the school system and say that, while I wholeheartedly agree with everything you have said about school systems and some educators...this particular program that I am developing is for a private school that uses its campus over the summer for summer camps and enrichment programs, so there are very good things about that, but it is also somewhat lucrative for them, I would imagine. Thanks again for the thoughtful reply! You sound like a true keener, and as a keener myself, I appreciate that! All the best with your aspirations for community gardens, and that program at a school in Northern California sounds fantastic!

Oooooh very good ideas. I hadn't thought about the Fibonacci Sequence correlation, but that is super-fascinating! I love the microcosm idea as well, and of course, I promise you, there will be perimeter involved!

Wow, what a fantastic resource! The school I will be at is VERY close to our most local University, so I will definitely be making some contacts. Thank you, and good luck with your Masters!!

A very good idea. There is a local community garden that does little workshops so I think I will look into those for a day trip. Thank you!

I am HIGHLY in support of chickens and I will definitely be talking about how beneficial they can be to the backyard gardening "system"...but unfortunately I don't think I will be able to have some live ones on hand...which would also be very cool...who knows!! Thanks for the idea!!
