By one account, clinking glasses together would cause each drink to spill over into the others' (though there is no real evidence for such an origin)

My friend's facebook status says that she is hypoglycemic and her doctors encouraged her to cut carbs and drink more alcohol and party to keep her blood sugar up (I know she's not hypoglycemic) - Reddit, what's the most blatantly bullshit thing someone's ever told you? by lochjessmonsterin AskReddit

I've got a fever... And the only prescription is more cowbell.

OP: Psh, yeah right. What kind of doctor would prescribe a musical instrument for a fever. Dumbass.

My thoughts about how TES online will be. by El3utheriosin gaming

[–]jklol 0 points1 point ago

Every week there's a post on how evil EA is, and how we should boycott them. Then the day every new anticipated EA game is released, everyone runs out and buys it, then posts how awesome the game is. See Dragon Age, Mass Effect, SWTOR to name a few.

Except no matter how much people on r/gaming bitch and moan about TES online, they'll still buy it and Bethesda will still happily turn a profit, making it worth it for them to continue with its development.

Austrian and Japanese researchers unveiled solar cells thinner than a thread of spider silk that are flexible enough to be wrapped around a single human hair. by nomdewebin science

[–]jklol 2 points3 points ago

No because then you'd be getting the worst of both worlds. The idea of a solar cell is to absorb as much light as possible and convert it into electrical energy, necessarily rendering the solar cell opaque. If you wanted to generate any amount of substantial power by integrating a solar cell with a window, you'd have a very opaque window.

Then why not have the solar cell absorb light outside of the visible range and have it be transparent in the visible light range? The problem with this is that most of the sun's energy is radiated towards the earth in the visible spectrum, so a majority of the available solar energy is then out of bounds. Absorbing light in the infrared has its own associated problems because objects at room temperature radiate in the infrared spectrum due to black body radiation, meaning if we designed a solar cell to absorb in the infrared, it will simultaneously reradiate all of its absorbed energy to the environment through black body radiation.

I have to try that by Cantmakeithenfakeitin funny

[–]jklol 0 points1 point ago

Ok, so I read the article, and 1) they did not use Hamiltonian mechanics whatsoever in their analysis, and 2) the way they modeled the cannon motion is very, very flawed. They've modeled the cannon position as proportional to -phi/phi_max where phi is the tilt angle of the ship. According to this model, as soon as the ship begins rocking back from its maximum angular displacement, the cannonballs will also change directions and begin rolling in the opposite direction, as evidenced by figure 7 in the article. This is not physical whatsoever. Consider a jar containing a marble. Tilting the jar left will cause the marble in the jar to shift to the left side of the jar. Then slowly tilt the jar back to the equilibrium position (completely upright), and then tilt the jar to the right. Notice how the marble will stay at the leftmost part of the jar until after the jar is tilted past the equilibrium point and then will begin rolling to the right side of the jar, not immediately when you begin to tilt the jar back to the equilibrium position from the leftmost tilt. Modeling the cannonballs correctly i.e. having them move this way will introduce a damping factor in their model and will make it harder for the people running back and forth on the ship to overturn it.

I hated when they untied the cannons during that part of the movie in order to help flip the boat. Letting the cannons loose when you're trying to hit resonance is just going to increase your damping, bro.

Technically not true. Populations growth is more accurately modeled logistically, which is approximately exponential in certain regimes.
