Not to be an asshole -- an apostrophe either replaces a letter (is not vs. isn't) or denotes possession (Bill's operating system). English grammar makes very little sense but folks base their opinion of others on their ability to use language properly.

As long as they don't try to pull Tortorella to DC, I'll be happy with whoever we end up with. I think at this point we should get an established NHL coach. Maybe somebody with some Stanley Cup experience. Somebody who can say "I've taken a team there -- shut up an do what I say."

That happened like 2 years ago. If this isn't a repost, I'll eat my foot.
Windows 8 is optional unless you're buying a new computer. I believe I'll take the option to stay on Windows 7. That plan worked reasonably well when I decided to avoid an upgrade to Windows Vista.
The few less-savvy users I've worked with on Windows 8 felt about the same way. The start menu is where folks have been going to start programs since Windows 95. Trying to tell them "the Windows key is the start menu" isn't going to help too much -- many of them have probably never even used it. Heck, they might not even know what the Windows key is!
Windows 95 departed from the Windows 3.11 paradigm, but not as much. The start menu just made the tree of programs available in a more easily accessed menu. The Windows 8 UI buries all of the existing desktop applications beneath Metro apps and it's not clear that typing a program name will make it appear. Adding a text entry box at the top of the screen might help make that more obvious, but Microsoft apparently wants to keep the Metro interface free of that kind of clutter.
I'm with several of the folks who have commented here - UI elements that are hidden and appear only when you decide to interact with them isn't user-friendly. I don't see how you add a visible cue for things like the Charms menu and closing Metro programs -- the idea seems to be users will just figure it out. Maybe Microsoft will have some amazing training videos that make it all clear. Unfortunately none of that is in place for the community preview, and the community preview may have already poisoned the well for many users.
I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I remember my wife telling me to never put that on my computer again. She rarely even touches that computer, but her opinion matters to me. She's my closest connection to the world of computer users who aren't sysadmins.
7 is so good I sometimes wonder what happened to make it right. I had a bunch of developers at my last job who were real stick-in-the-mud types. I slowly transitioned them to 7 and now they all love it. In many ways 7 is so good it doesn't really leave much room for an incremental upgrade.
Of course I'd really like to see Microsoft bite the bullet and tell people they're breaking backwards compatibility, using WinFS as the default filesystem and completely obfuscating the filesystem for all but administrator users (and only REAL administrators should require that access - any program that doesn't play nice should be rewritten). Unfortunately I don't think that's likely.
I made an attempt to be a linux admin and got fired 6 months into it. I thought I was doing all right -- the basics of linux administration aren't exactly rocket science. Now that I've gotten over the "GUI is always more efficient" barrier I'm going to make more of an effort to learn PowerShell.
I'm obviously not sold on Windows 8 or Server 2012. This comment stream makes it clear that my concerns are shared by a bunch of folks. It's not a desktop OS -- it's a tablet OS with desktop components. I hope Microsoft is paying attention to the caterwauling about the defaults and budges a bit.

I couldn't find that registry key in the consumer preview -- I'm not sure it is still available. I'm aware that you can use the keyboard and get to apps fairly quickly, but that behavior is not obvious.
Server Core is the default install for servers. I'm happy to use PowerShell, I'm just not sure if they'll force me to use Windows 8 to connect to Server 2012 servers. They got pretty far along that line in 2008.

That's really not the point. I'm sure if you tried you could find ladies down for it, but it's really not the place. It's hot as fuck and everybody is pretty dirty. On top of that, some folks might be out of their minds on illegal substances. I'm married and my wife and I have been to two Bonnaroos together. We haven't had sex once at Bonnaroo.
You're at most 10 feet away from other peoples' tents. The time of night where it's even close to cool enough to get your freak on everyone is trying to sleep so any noise won't be appreciated.

Windows 8 pisses me off more than any operating system release. It is an absolutely indefensible departure from the Windows paradigm.
Windows 8 will just convert more people to Mac. Developers won't upgrade because it is bass-ackwards stupid. I do not understand why anyone would defend this boondoggle.
What business environment is going to give up 20 or more hours of learning how shit works for their most computer-savvy users? Why would you want to put people in an environment they don't know how to work in?
My last employer wouldn't upgrade everyone to Office 2007 because they didn't want to force the ribbon on users.
Microsoft Windows 8 is destined for failure. It is Microsoft Bob 2.0.
[–]jjhare -3 points-2 points-1 points 13 days ago
I see no reason to stop hating on Windows 8 as loudly as possible. It's a terrible departure from what Windows is supposed to be. It is Microsoft Bob 2.0. The whole idea is flawed. Microsoft is flailing and failing at the same time. The only folks I've talked to who like Windows 8 are Microsoft zealots who will push Microsoft's newest product regardless of whether it's the right direction.
My last job was in a .NET web development shop. I was the system administrator who had to deal with the complaints from developers about their OS and applications. It was hard to push Windows 7 but once they got used to it, they all liked it. Now those same change-weary developers will have to deal with an OS that is not designed for the kind of work they do.
Windows 8 is stupid. Metro is stupid (in a desktop form factor). Anyone defending the idea is stupid.
Don't take away my start menu. Don't make me click through three dialogs to shut my computer down. Don't force me to deal with fucking Metro when I DON'T FUCKING WANT TO. Don't tell me what I should want in a desktop -- I spent 18 years learning the Windows interface as it is.
Windows 8 is an abomination and the world would be much better off without it. It's another example of the bullshit me tooism of the whole Ballmer reign. Microsoft deserves to fail for the half-baked crap they're trying to push on users.
You better believe there will be a huge backlash when they finally force this interface on users. They will hate it and not want to mess with it. I've already done some UI tests with folks and all of the people I've worked with think it's absolute crap.
[–]jjhare -2 points-1 points0 points 13 days ago
I spent 3 or 4 weeks trying to use it as my daily driver. It was frustrating and not productive. I don't want a blended tablet/desktop OS. I want a desktop OS. I am using a keyboard and mouse because that is the UI paradigm I want to use. If I want a touch-centric UI, I have an Android tablet and an iPad. I see no value-added from having to totally relearn interactions with my desktop computer.
I don't even understand why people like Metro. It seems like a huge step backward for a desktop operating system -- when folks are adding windowing to Android and iOS through unofficial updates why would anyone want to go to a non-windowed environment? What does Metro offer the power user?
Metro and Windows 8 are crap. Defending that crap proves you're a Microsoft zealot just as much in the bag as any Apple zealot. How does some touchscreen interface help me write scripts? How does it help me surf the web?
Windows 8 is Bob 2.0.

Regardless of Game 7, would you keep Hunter on as coach next year? by TheRedRiskyin caps

I think it's partially up to Hunter. He sounds like he's enjoying himself and the guys so hopefully he'll stick around. I was a bit non-committal in the regular season but once the playoffs started it became pretty clear Hunter has been a difference-maker.

A bear riding a roller coaster is a very good description of this year's playoffs for Caps fans.
Thank goodness the game on Saturday is at 7:30. Otherwise I wouldn't get anything done!
The Schultz hate needs to stop. He's been solid in both series. He's not flashy but he's doing the job. He won his way out of Hunter's doghouse and he has continued to play at a high enough level to get ice time. Schultz is not a bad hockey player. On many teams he would be a first line d-man.
