I just put on some work gloves and grab 'em behind the head like a cat. Never a problem.

Best housing strategy with collapse in mind? by justinkimballin collapse

[–]jimgagnon 1 point2 points ago

Bought a redwood forest in 2002, and I'm still in positive territory. Problem with country property is that it's often hard for prospective buyers to get a loan. The banks won't give them a 30 fixed; usually the best you can get is a one or two year loan. Most country sellers carry the loan themselves, with usually a seven year term and higher than normal interest rates.

Advantage of a redwood forest is that it produces a marketable commodity and has a minimal property tax rate. Of course, there's no infrastructure so if you want a modern life you have to pay a lot up front to develop it. Another issue is that I don't like to kill trees older than myself (54), so I haven't exploited my forest yet. I hope to keep it that way.

Dear redditors, what's the most common error that foreigners do cooking your country dishes? by MrGestorein Cooking

Corollary: chopping up a hot dog and putting on a pizza does not qualify as sausage. Saw that one in Indonesia.

Our orangie eats anything. Especially loves cashew. I think all orange cats are reincarnated people paying for voting Republican in a past life.

We have the technology! Let's build the Enterprise I in twenty years and tool around the solar system. by jimgagnonin spaceflight

What if making it look like the Enterprise were to cause it to be fully funded? Ever think of the social angle?

I hear the young-uns call 'em mumble pants. You can't quite make out what they're saying, but you sure can read their lips.

PSA: 'Mac Memory' is a SCAM, Mac's use the same RAM as PC's by autotomin Frugal

I have a 1997 vintage PowerBook that still runs just fine. My titanium, on the other hand, is getting pretty flakey.

[–]jimgagnon 1 point2 points ago

I have a MacBook and Dell laptop of the same vintage: 2007. The MacBook's dvd drive has failed and I replaced the keyboard once, while the Dell's internal circuitry that charges the battery has died and both the keyboard and mouse pad are glitchy.

I would call it a draw.

I can't be the only person who sees terraforming Venus and Mars as linked problems. by noddwydin space_settlement

[–]jimgagnon 1 point2 points ago

We should at least wait to determine what kind of life might be present before attempting to transform a planet. Also, one would need to determine how to make Mars generate a magnetic field before attempting to terraform it, otherwise all your work would go to waste as radiation levels on the surface would be too high for humans to live even if there were a dense enough atmosphere to breath.

[–]jimgagnon 0 points1 point ago

No point in terraforming Venus until you determine how a terrestrial planet generates a magnetic field, and how to create one on Venus. One imagines the problem is linked to Venus' rotation rate, so the outlines of any solution would require one to take a suitably large icy moon/dwarf planet, move it from its current position and directing it so that it slams into Venus in such a way that it simultaneously gets the planet rotation sped up while providing the water needed to reduce the atmosphere.

A daunting problem, to say the least; even if one got it right it would take millions of years for the resulting mess to cool down. It will be eons before humans can command that kind of energy and technology; best to first go there and live in the clouds for the foreseeable future.

No, this is a different sinkhole; nothing like the Quebec one.

The killer with Subarus is that any service that requires head removal necessitates pulling the engine.

2000 and 2001 Volvo V70s. Notorious transmission and electrical problems, and the subframe needs to be dropped and engine lifted to service tranny.
