I expect this is for your own educational purposes, but there is one thing you must always remember: never ever build your own cryptosystem.

That being said, encryption algorithm design is something of a black art. There are many guidelines for how not to design an cryptographic algorithm, and there are accepted guidelines for what features a good cryptosystem is believe to have, but there are no hard and fast rules.

In fact, a lot of crypto algorithm testing consists of "here is my prototype crypto scheme, here is a ciphertext, now decrypt it."

I have one problem with the consciousness argument. For a good while after birth, newborn children have no real consciousness to speak of. They form only the weakest of memories, so while they respond to environmental stimuli, they are no better than an animal.

If it's advantageous to the mother, why not terminal it then? If the procedure is done carefully and with the proper anesthetics, then this argument permits children to be terminated well into their early life.

What about a non-conscious being? Newborn children are hardly conscious, considering how they have no rational thought processes developed yet. They form no memories, and they live essentially a non-sentient blobs of flesh. If we are to claim that there is no adverse effect on non-conscious cells, then why not go whole hog and say that infants can be aborted up to a few weeks after birth?

Personally, I believe that while preventative birth control like condoms and the pill are acceptable because your actions are affecting only you and your partner. However, one of the amazing things about sex is that it creates new people, and once you start getting into abortion, there is a third person involved. Abortion means you're taking advantage of the fact that you are bigger and stronger, not to mention actually conscious, to have an adverse effect on the life of a third person.

Besides, if you're willing to be careful, you can easily have all the sex you want without having to worry about a third person becoming involved. We have today the means to separate the aspects of love and reproduction, and if you do it carefully and responsibly, you won't have to worry about pregnancy.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that evolution is a fact. You would have to be a fool to refuse to believe your own eyes. Denial of evolution and global warming is a black stain on the reputation of the religious in the USA, because it gives the impression of ignorance where there ought not to be.

As someone who is not yet married, but hopes to be in the future, I'm not sure I have the experience to have a proper opinion about gay marriage. I don't mean to run to the bible as though it had some sort of authority, but I think it's worthwhile to point out two passages that seem to epitomize the common view in christians.

While the passage in the book of Leviticus about men lying with men being an abomination and all that is usually touted as the bible's opposition to gay marriage, there are actually two in Genesis that are more eloquent and less insane: "For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh", and "God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply."

These lines highlight that christian view that marriage is about love and procreation. The objection to gay marriage is that two people of the same sex can't create children of their own, so an actual marriage would be pointless. Not espousing an opinion, just pointing out background. For one thing, the bible never mentions marriage and taxes...

I understand the sentiment, but there is one thing that I find a lot of people on reddit aren't aware of. When you're on reddit, you think about executives and leaders and such in the context of your own personal experience. Not speaking to you in particular, but more often than not, that experience is one of an eighteen-to-twenty-five year old going to or having graduated from a middling college, living somewhere in America. You have your entire life ahead of you, you want to go somewhere with your life, and you probably don't know where that is. You're impatient with the direction both of your own life and that of the country in general.

You are idealistic, you have your whole life ahead of you, and more than anything you just want to leave the starting gate. Once you do, you want to do something with integrity, even if it's something simple like working a steady job. From this standpoint, the attitude of these people is impossible to comprehend. They seem to do things just for the money, and if there is one thing you promise yourself you'll never be corrupted by, it's money.

Now consider those people who manage to climb to such a height that they are tapped to lead these sorts of organizations. These are people who are older by at least ten or twenty years, and have long since cleared the starting line where you now stand. They have years of hard work and career building behind them, and they view a position such as this as a reward for having the talent and the drive to get there. Not many people know this, but when you hire executives, you search from within a certain pool. The pool is populated by people like this: talented, charismatic people with the force of will and the force of personality to make it to the top of their respective heaps.

Now, imagine saying to someone like this "We want someone with your managerial talents to lead our company, but we will only pay you $120,000, which is roughly a third of what you are earning at your current firm. But it's ok, because its for breast cancer research, so it's a good cause." This is executive's equivalent of those hilarious posts on craigslist that go something like "Work two hundred hours for me and I'll give you equity in my company."

A web designer knows what he is worth, and that that amount is not "equity." In a similar way, an executive knows what he is worth, give or take the error introduced by his ego, and he knows that that figure is greater than than what lower-mid level employees make.

That I as an software engineer exist to make business majors' stupid ideas a reality. Never before have I seen so many people with such dumb ideas so optimistic about their business prospects. Your idea is brilliant, and it could change the way people do (something stupid)! All you need is one of those computer guys to make it for you!

Never mind the fact that you clearly have no conception of the market and no technical abilities whatsoever. It doesn't take years of business training to see that when someone's only value add to a company is the initial idea, they're effectively worthless. Never mind that all successful web applications are constantly being modified and improved. All you need is someone to work for a week to make your genius idea into a website.

The thing is that that's another knee-jerk reaction: If a company is profiting on something then it must be bad, and if someone makes money doing something then they must be disingenuous. It is possible to do good work and profit from it.

Reddit seems to be uncomfortable with non profit organizations being run like businesses. If not like a business, though, then how should they be run? Reddit Bill Gates because he donates a large part of his fortune to charity, as though his charitable donations are supposed to be penance for the sin of leading a large successful corporation. At the same time, the leaders of the Komen Foundation are demonized for doing almost the exact same thing, the only difference being that they are directly at the head of a charitable organization, not a for-profit company.

It's extremely naive to expect a huge, financially successful entity to be run by people who make fifty thousand a year, drive their parents' old cars, and post to reddit about how they 'rescued' a kitten. The Komen Foundation and its partners operate like corporations because that is how large, autonomous organizations are kept above water. They sell the rights to use their trademarked pink ribbons to entities who make profits from them in exchange for a cut to be donated to charity because otherwise no company would want to waste their time with them. At the end of the day, they are an organization that has two goals: keep afloat financially, and donate money to cancer research.

Reddit, let me warn you. This kind of thinking is dangerous. The moment an organization makes a misstep, is misunderstood, or simply makes a mistake, these sorts of posts pop up.

There are two things that are bad about this kind of criticism. Firstly, it completely disregards the fact that the work that the organization does is actually good. Funding breast cancer is a good thing, regardless of who supports it, and simply the act of funding it should be a good thing in peoples' minds.

The second problem, however, is the one that is more damaging to discourse. Up until their blunder of withdrawing support to planned parenthood, reddit had no problem with the pink ribbon campaign and the Komen Foundation. Now, they are being attacked retroactively. It's not that they made a mistake, it's that they were never any good to begin with. All of a sudden, an organization that was well guided until a recent error is painted as having been evil from the start.

This kind of thinking is deadly. There is scarcely a single organization that has not made and recovered from a blunder in their past, going on to do good work. The Komen Foundation has led good efforts to fund womens' health, and their most recent error notwithstanding, is a good organization.

I would suggest a good operating systems course. You really gain an awareness of what happens at the lowest levels of the system, and how these things affect the performance of you applications.

If you want to go into game development, having skills in both graphics and operating systems would make you a serious candidate.
