Bonsee, I think you're mixing up the events. Saturday, June 26th was the day Police cruisers were burned and most of the damage was done. Sunday, June 27th, the Spadina kettling incident occurred. There was no violence at the time and place, with cops only claiming they saw masked "Black Bloc" members with weapons heading for the protest.

Also, Saturday's violence was almost entirely ignored by Police, with criticism being raised about the inadequate response at the time. Your alternative occurred. Cops stood by and did nothing. The Queen St cruiser burning near the Spadina intersection especially went on for a long time, with almost no Police intervention, even though Police were near by.

The Police response on Sunday was heavy handed and inappropriate and thus is being criticized. People were kettled as a response to the Saturday incident, not directly to something that occurred on Sunday. This timing of events is important.

And it wasn't merely "a couple people" who mere mistreated. The majority of the 1100+ arrested and placed into the Eastern Ave. facility were let go without any charges. Their Charter rights were stepped on, and they were mistreated at the facility. Many more were mistreated in Queen's Park, at the Spadina intersection, on King St. and at several stages on Queen St. Let's not forget the illegal searches performed along the perimeter. We were blatantly lied to by Chief Bill Blair about a supposed law being enacted. LIED TO.

The argument that anyone using common sense should have avoided the interaction is both insulting and misleading. For one, people who were trapped in the Spadina kettling incident included residents of the area who were returning home from dinner. We should also reasonably expect that although a summit is taking place, even blocks away, we should have the freedom to walk the streets and enjoy the city as we could on any other day.

The Police response on Sunday was extreme, a complete juxtaposition to the lack of response on Saturday. This was a waste of taxpayer money, a bloated security budget such as this with an ill-prepared strategy is also insulting.

The majority of the protesters weren't; A:) Preventing pedestrians from leaving B:) Beating anybody up, and C:) Breaking laws. At least at the Spadina intersection mentioned above. The COPS over-reacted, broke laws, and pissed all over the Charter.

I'd rather deal with the inconvenience of protesters - whose right to do so I support much more than the over-reaching hands of the police - than not have those freedoms guaranteed for me.

Yup, and those dozens and dozens of things are usually thrown away. I worked on a Swiss Chalet job once as a photo assistant. We received about 40 chickens, picked out the best ones to shoot, and the rest was thrown out at the end. They'd sat at the studio for a whole day, so they weren't good to eat.

It's a wasteful industry.
