Facebook Bankers Secretly Cut Facebook’s Revenue Estimates In Middle Of IPO Roadshow by robert32907in business

[–]jba 1 point2 points ago

His article is ridiculous. Institutional and Accredited investors bought the stock at $38. These are 'smart' people with tons of money. They took the risk, and FB (the company) made out great. $16B+ in the bank for growth and acquisitions. From a corporate perspective, there's no way you can call this anything but a success for both FB and MS - they maximized their price and return. The people who invested in the IPO may never make their $16B back, but that's the risk you take when investing in an IPO, and one of the reasons we limit IPO's to the 1%'ers.

edit:

one of his commenters nails it:

Struts for '02 A4? by jamarel91in Audi

[–]jba 1 point2 points ago

Audi's don't use strut's, but if you're talking about getting new shocks/springs, coilovers are the way to go.

The gold standard are Stasis Ohlins coilovers, but they're a bit pricey at $4k for the fully-adjustable bump/rebound motorsports (i have these in my '04 S4) and $2k for their SL (only height adjustable), but both are worth it and will completely transform how your car handles/rides. The ride is smoother than stock S4 shocks, but due to how fast the shocks can react, you can run immensely higher spring rates all around - particularly in the rear, where Stasis provides a 1200lb linear-rate spring - resulting in much more balanced handling on our front-heavy cars.

Next best option are Vogtland GT coilovers, which are cheapish, but actually match the coilovers with proper spring rates.

Other options are Bilstein PSS9/PSS10's, KW V3 (or on the low-end, Koni, H&R, or Tein), but you'll likely end up with stock-like spring rates & sub-optimal handling. That said, some people don't care.

Try calling Stasis (http://www.stasisengineering.com/) or a place like Achtuning (http://achtuning.com/) for more info.

Good luck.

Hey Shane, thanks for what Vice has become.

A bit OT, guessing you spent quite a bit of time there before your NK trip, so what was your favorite part about South Korea?

yeah, the V6 'stang has a slightly better power/weight ratio, but the light car is still going to be more fun to toss around. I'm sure the STI tuner versions will fix any power deficits soon though.

Where can you find the most authentic Japanese food in NYC? by LunacyNowin nyc

[–]jba 0 points1 point ago

Btw, just wanted to note that this list is awesome and spot-on. Only place I'd add is along the lines of 15east, and maybe more tokyo-authentic in terms of the physical space aspects is Azabu down in tribeca. Food quality is similar, but 15 east is more fun though; Masa is the man.

I just put a set on my audi S4 - 245/35/19 all around. Still breaking in, but really happy with them thus far. They ride comparatively soft, but both turn-in and absolute grip is insane. enjoy!

Linux SSD performance has been utter crap for several kernel versions - not seeing any sign of hope by happybob007in linux

No, no it hasn't. He updates his thread later with filesystem based tests that prove his first tests wrong:

https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/1/29/8

Write performace is actually up, and read vs. cpu is about even. (suggesting that multithreaded I/O may be better on newer kernels at the cost of singlethreaded I/O). There MAY be a bug with userland access of block devices, but that's somewhat unclear at the moment. (also not that important beyond filesystem creation).

Without downvoting you, you NEVER, NEVER, NEVER stop on a track unless you are black flagged. (then you stop immediately, no matter what). There are really good reasons for this (mainly that it can cause a huge chain reaction accident) and all good HPDE's drill this into you when attending.

Unfortunate about the downvotes, as this is the smartest thing in this thread. The fact he was MVP of the finals over Lamb is ridiculous. He's got a ways to go to be a solid pro.

But given Obama's track record of "anti-war", "anti-mandate", "anti-secrecy" all being turned on its head,

Except that never happend. Obama was never anti-war (he expressly called for expanding certain conflicts), anti-mandate (he said he would prefer a single player, but was never expressly anti-mandate), and the secrecy one is up for debate (some things are more open now, others about the same as bush).

Car Insurance is not expensive in NYC. Bundle it with your homeowners/renters insurance, and you'll be fine.

Owning a car in the city, practical or not? by leeroyjin nyc

[–]jba 1 point2 points ago

It's practical, but only for getting out of the city. You're not going to want to ever drive it from place to place in the city unless you have a garage/dedicated-parking-spot in both locations. Also, you're going to want to garage it. Expect $250+/month in brooklyn and $500+/month in manhattan.

STaSIS upgrade? by Hydraulixin Audi

[–]jba 1 point2 points ago

Eh, i've been around on audiworld, quattroworld, and audizine since 2001 or so, and never heard of a major customer service issue with them BEYOND when they were moving their headquarters from norcal, and it was difficult to get parts on time for a few month window.

Their products are excellent and designed to tax the car in reasonable ways that don't result in it falling apart in 2 years. Also, no one in the audi world does chassis tuning better than Stasis. Do other kits make more power? For sure, but do other kits cover your warranty for 4years/50k miles? Not that i've heard of. I think it's a reasonable tradeoff. IMO, of course.
