TROPHY CASE

Why does everyone say they have/had/are recording an EP when it's really what would have been called a demo 10 years ago? by libraiscariotin WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jak551 3 points4 points ago

People have been putting out EP's forever. A demo is an unfinished sketch of a song. An EP is an "Extended Play" record, just as much a finished recording as an LP is. The EP fell out of favor for a while when record players were able to play 12 inches and such at 33 1/3 rpm, and even more so with the CD. But in the digital age of staying relevant and releasing more music in less physical forms, the EP has been making a steady comeback as a release tool for bands of all sizes.

i like San Antonio Taco Company (or, as it's better known "Satco") for some tex-mex food. There's one near the Vanderbuilt campus and one in downtown.

Let's create a "Hey Bonnaroo, special shit is happening right now" hash tag for Twitter by drunkermonkeyin bonnaroo

can't put an @ symbol in the hashtag, so it might be better to just take it out and do #rightnowroo

I remember being on the ferris wheel during that Bassnectar set, and seeing the enormous crowd there and at Lil' Wayne and being just "NOPE!"

I can assure you, i will be wherever skrillex is not that night, for many many reasons

This is just ridiculous. by DrBagelBunsin bonnaroo

Antlers > War on Drugs, i've seen both bands multiple times. Antlers always kill it live, War on Drugs a bit more "meh"

Bon Iver is great, but it's gotta be Ben Folds Five all the way. I'll probably actually leave the fest after the Five's set is done. It might have been a different story if i didn't see Bon Iver last summer, but i just love those first Ben Folds records so much, there's no way i'm missing an opportunity like this.

12 days until I leave, when are you guys leaving and how long is your drive? I want to hear about the details of your road trip. by pewpnstuffin bonnaroo

[–]jak551 0 points1 point ago

We'll leave thursday around noon probably from NYC, it's a 14 hour drive, but we'll probably stay in a hotel somewhere along the way. Last year we left a little later, so we drove 7 hours and stopped in Roanoke, VA before leaving again thursday morning. This year we should be able to make it a little farther the first day.

I could do without Yelawolf personally, but throw GZA and Das Racist in there and i'd be more than happy

what do I need to make myself a little studio? by Jabba117in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jak551 0 points1 point ago

You're going to need:

  1. Microphones, you probably only need to use one mic at a time (except for drums, that could be a difficult one). If you're just starting out, and SM57 or SM58 is probably a great place to start, as they can do basically anything you want for $100. Drums is a whole different monster, but you could feasibly mic a drumset with just one microphone.

  2. An interface, either a USB interface or a Firewire interface, preferably with Microphone preamps (xlr inputs).

Questlove ft. Ludacris, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Childish Gambino, Danny Brown, and Reggie Watts? I'd watch that

Looking for a first pair of monitors for ~200 bucks. Help me out? by PolarisBearsin WeAreTheMusicMakers

You could always look at the Rockits, you can probably find a pair for about $300

I was in a band, and this was the last song we recorded before splitting up. IMO one of our best songs we've written. Let me know what you think Music Makers! by rawsonin WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jak551 0 points1 point ago

Shame you guys broke up, i really like this song. Sounds really tight, and the production is good especially for a live video. Reminds me of Mutemath or Mew, really great vibe.

In case anybody was wondering, the whole thing was shot on real film (not sure what kind, i'm not the video savy person), and the song was recorded over a couple of days in our friends attic. Would love feedback, questions, advice, comments, hate mail, or whatever

I want to buy a decent but not top of the line mic to record some vocals, suggestions? by wharrgarblein WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jak551 2 points3 points ago

I like the Audio Technica AT2020 for $99, i use it on most of my bands vocals even when better mics are available because i think its pretty neutral and suits our singers voice well.
