I can understand people resenting The Great Gatsby after having been forced to read it in high school. Still, I'll never understand how anybody can consider Gatsby, or anything else by Fitzgerald for that matter, to be badly written. Gatsby isn't my favorite Fitzgerald novel, but his writing is nuanced and powerful, and I'm not sure that he ever wrote an ugly sentence.
