"'Frankie Edgar Undeserving Of Rematch With Benson Henderson,' Says BJ Penn" by Rokusic6in MMA

[–]ixid 6 points7 points ago

He's right. The number of rematches in the UFC is getting silly. Henderson clearly won, he is the champion and shouldn't have to fight Edgar immediately.

Have you actually played with genetic algorithms at all? The speed with which things adapt is almost spooky.

Why did the tech press get it so very wrong about larger screens? I hope we see a great improvement in the screen as a percentage of front area, I was surprised to find out the Note's screen is only 66% of the front area. The Panasonic Eluga Power will reach something around 72%.

Multithreading Problems In Game Design by blackhole12in programming

[–]ixid 0 points1 point ago

Thank you, that's an interesting article. I was aware that tasks would break down rather like that but it's showing a far greater benefit for hyperthreading than I expected versus the cost and range of tasks that would show a benefit from it. You would of course need to test whether a heavy-weight task like physics behaves like the Dhrystone task or not in saturating the processor and thus being hurt by hyperthreading or not.

Multithreading Problems In Game Design by blackhole12in programming

[–]ixid 1 point2 points ago

I'm a little confused. According to your article you have implemented concurrency- your physics thread will be running concurrently with your game thread.

Multithreading Problems In Game Design by blackhole12in programming

[–]ixid 1 point2 points ago

What sort of figures do you get out of interest for the physical cores utilization with and without hyperthreading for the various thread task types?

Multithreading Problems In Game Design by blackhole12in programming

[–]ixid 17 points18 points ago

It isn't immaterial from a performance point of view in most cases however, especially processor heavy tasks like physics. I think it's better to think in terms of threads to physical cores, not threads to logical cores. As I understand it hyperthreading is mainly useful for tasks that have significant periods of stalling, a hyperthreaded core doesn't have twice the number crunching potential. Additionally many people have desktop i5s which do not have hyperthreading.

Edit: zokier's links below seem to fairly clearly demonstrate that in most tasks hyperthreading is clearly and significantly beneficial so I am incorrect. I would stick to my point that many, gamers especially for whom the desktop i5 (the mobile i5 is hyperthreaded to avoid any confusion) is very popular, do not have hyperthread-capable processors.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]ixid 0 points1 point ago

You can see where they are and that they're not near places they're not allowed to go like schools. There will always be paedophiles you can't justify locking up forever, though the individual in this case is probably not one of those, and you need some ideas about how to deal with them. I don't think chemical castration is an acceptable option.

I meant only in dangerous cases, I will amend the original post to make that clearer.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]ixid 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure what your point is. I made it clear that I was not saying all schizophrenics are dangerous but I was saying, and backed it up with the article, that a number of individuals are potentially violent as a result of their schizophrenia.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]ixid 4 points5 points ago

Yes, they lose certain rights. That's a rather dangerous use of language as if to imply criminals are somehow 'unpersons', specific rights are lost and the loss of those rights must be justifiable. You'll need to justify a state's right to take away this specific medical right, I don't accept that states have that right. We do not run societies on a pure cost basis.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]ixid 1 point2 points ago

Reference. You seemed to present a statement of fact as a justification. Yes, in countries that do immoral things they do less immoral things that are still unacceptable. That doesn't justify those acts.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]ixid 7 points8 points ago

Some countries boil prisoners alive, I guess that justifies everything that's less severe as well. I don't live in a country that has the death penalty and I'm glad of that.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]ixid 47 points48 points ago

I have serious reservations about this. I don't think the state should have any right to impose chemical treatments on individuals. The slippery slope of medicating former prisoners in behaviour altering ways scares me though yes, if we see pedophilia as a medical condition it is not unreasonable to expect that to be medicated similarly to the more dangerous forms of schizophrenia. I understand that people like Park are not safe in society and will re-offend given the chance but I'd prefer to offer them a choice between continued imprisonment or GPS tagging/monitoring. I'd need to know more about the medical details of the treatment to fully form an opinion on it- is it reversible, what are the side effects and so on.

Problem #348 by Bubba__in projecteuler

[–]ixid 1 point2 points ago

Yours is a smarter approach, this one is surprisingly attackable with simple brute force. I was going to write my solution similarly but the first attempt did the job in under 5.5 seconds:

module main;
import std.stdio, std.datetime, std.algorithm, std.math;

bool isPalin(ulong n)
{   if(n < 11)
        return false;
    ulong high = 10UL ^^ cast(ulong) log10(n);
    while(high >= 10)
    {   ulong temp = n / high;
        if(temp != n % 10)
            return false;
        n -= temp * high;
        high /= 100;
        n  /= 10;
    }
    return true;
}

void main()
{   StopWatch sw;
    sw.start;
    enum MAX = 32_000;
    ubyte[ulong] sq;

    foreach(ulong i;2..MAX)
    {   ulong i2 = i ^^ 2;
        foreach(ulong j;2..MAX)
        {   ulong temp = i2 + j ^^ 3;
            if(temp > MAX ^^ 2)
                break;
            if(isPalin(temp))
                ++sq[temp];
        }
    }

    ulong[] arr;
    foreach(i;sq.byKey)
        if(sq[i] == 4)
            arr ~= i;

    arr.sort[0..5].reduce!("a + b").writeln;
    sw.peek.msecs.writeln("msecs");
}
