That might apply to broadly, but a little padding makes it so the text isn't hitting the edges of the box which just seemed off to me :)

Also just looked at your article pages. There are a lot of cool font things you can do with fonts on the web nowadays. Lots of fonts you can use, lots of looks you can achieve. For starters you might try something simple and super readable for the body of the articles like...

I've never actually done one myself. I'd have a div above your image holder div that used the same dimensions and use either a png or just do a gradient and apply an opacity setting. You'll probably need to fiddle with this a bit to get it to work alright in IE.

I personally like the text overlay but you're absolutely right about the white or light colored images. He could do color overlays on the image like the verge http://www.theverge.com/ or he could do a black background for that text and align them to the bottom with a little padding so that the important parts of the images don't get covered.

I think of all caps as a highlighter of sorts. It makes things stand out but to much of it and suddenly things just get hard to read. I'd probably not do titles if I was building the site, but I'd leave things like the menu's and maybe superfluous text like the read more or maybe comment count? Dunno. I'd do some A/B testing for the titles and see if you can see a difference.

I'd also get more spacing in between articles and MAYBE have the option of doing rectangles, two across for the sub articles. It might be cool looking and get more info on each visible page. I dunno.

Finally you might mix in some colors. Get some orange highlighting some places with white text? You could try overlaying the article title on the images and maybe doing some sort of overlay to signify categories like the verge http://www.theverge.com/

Overall I like the direction!

I think they do tend to be bland because they're generally attempting to be somewhat camouflaged :p I really liked your takes on them though. You mixed a lot of really cool elements with some fantastic classic cars. I especially loved the one with the Iron Cross. It looks like some villain from a movie should be stepping out of it at any moment.

I would say it should have more color. The sidebar for instance could have different colors to help highlight the different areas.

Text should be bigger since you're probably dealing with older people.

I'd say your heading in a good direction. The top is my favorite part because it's simpler. You just need to continue that concept the rest of the way through the site. Focus on simplicity and making the text very readable.

I realize that is just filler text but it's hard to read due to spacing, font, line height and some other issues.

I didn't mean to blind copy things into the website. More look at what works on their sites, and incorporate elements into yours. Whenever you learn something new your standing on the heads of those that came before you and design is no different. Use other peoples advances to teach yourself and help yourself grow.

That needs a lot of work imo. For starters the site doesn't really say anything to me about what the site is about. Sites need to be glancable to a point. You need to be able to look at it and think "ah well that site is about music/design/pr/food/etc..."

The site has no visual intrigue. Looking at it I don't see anything that is engaging me.

That font is hard to read and I would probably NEVER end up reading that paragraph.

So with all that in mind go somewhere like theme themeforest.net and check out some themes that have the same feel as your site will copy elements from them that you think work.
