An amendment that would legalize the use of propaganda on American audiences is being inserted into the latest defense authorization bill. The bi-partisan amendment is sponsored by Rep. Mark Thornberry from Texas and Rep. Adam Smith from Washington State. by Orangutanin politics

The Pentagon spends some $4 billion a year to sway public opinion already

WTF do they do with $4 billion? What does that effort look like? I'm imagining large PR depts at the pentagon, but that couldn't amount to that kind of $$. It boggles the mind.

7 Tips for Saving on Rental Cars by its_ourtime_downherein Frugal

[–]its_ourtime_downhere[S] 0 points1 point ago

Funny, despite trying all the tips in this article, I ended up finding the best rate on a weekly rental through Hotwire, and it was $30 cheaper! Maybe because I'm in NYC and some of the smaller places and autoslash weren't available. I guess you just have to do the work and explore all options.

Confusion is a very appropriate reaction to this, but just go with it.

Celebrity Chef Mario Batali Goes on Food Stamps Budget by freepinellasin Frugal

[–]its_ourtime_downhere 2 points3 points ago

My wife and I did this challenge this week. We started on Monday, so tomorrow is our last day, and our food supplies are definitely dwindled. We spent $59 on groceries at Fairway (we're also in NYC) and then fired up the slow-cooker. It has really been all about beans, grains, peanut butter, and just being more conscious of every bite we take. At first I thought it was just gimmicky, but after doing it I've seen how when you're on such a limited budget you have to choose each item very carefully and at times make sacrifices (cheaper coffee, no dessert, smaller portions). I applaud Chef Batali for highlighting this important issue that affects so many in our society.

Incidentally, we're also inspired to bring our grocery bills down moving forward. Not down to $60/ week, but $80/ week for the two of us and we should be golden.

I have no idea if this is a thing, I've never heard of it before either and had the same reaction as you. I think it will be good for a lot of lol's, this shit is ridiculous, and it just keeps going and going - 22 chapters in all.

Thanks, I can't see a reason to not choose the Ferrari but thought maybe someone would make a case.

I would disagree with you on this, citing the Baal Shem Tov's teaching "everything is God, and nothing but God"

Does anyone have the Finis SwiMP3? by evanshallin Swimming

[–]its_ourtime_downhere 0 points1 point ago

I have one, I've had it for about 6 months and I love it. The sound quality is not great, but it does the trick. The bass is pretty much non-existent. I use it with Speedo Vanquishers and it's very comfortable. I don't think it affects my swimming adversely, but I'm a pretty casual swimmer, just for fitness.

The sound is much better if you also wear earplugs, as this drowns out the ambient noise of the water sloshing. The sound is overall much better when you're underwater. The battery life has been great, I can easily get 10-12 hours per charge. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, the buttons are raised/ textured so you know what you're pressing without looking.

Adding music is easy, and if you keep the music organized in folders, those act as playlists. One thing that's really annoying though is that you can't reorder the songs once they've been added, and the play order is the order the songs were added so it requires some additional attention when adding music.

Overall I would definitely recommend it. Adding music to workouts is awesome. I found mine on eBay for $75, I think it was a buy it now or best offer deal.

I was using google to look up how to pronounce something, and the first thing listed under the Autocomplete was "How to pronounce meme", so I guess your friend is not alone.

So who do you guys predict/want to be added to the lineup? by BelieveInSymmetryin bonnaroo

Animal Collective would be a great addition. I would also love to see Jeff Mangum, but it doesn't seem like this would be his scene, the big crowds and all.

Heckler Asks Mitt Romney If It's Patriotic To Stash His Money In The Cayman Islands by twolf1in politics

All true, but my point is that it seemed like he was caught off guard with what should have been an expected question and it once again made him look extremely out of touch and caused a spat of bad press.

I wouldn't give much credit to his campaign. He was totally unprepared when asked what his tax rate was, to which he replied: "It's probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything, for the past 10 years, my income comes overwhelmingly from investments made in the past, rather than ordinary income or earned annual income. I got a little bit of income from my book, but I gave that all away. Then, I get speakers fees from time to time, but not very much." His speaker fees in 2010 were $374,327. And his tax rate in 2010 was 13.9%.

I went to dinner with a friend and he wouldn't let me contribute to the bill, no matter how much I insisted. by its_ourtime_downherein firstworldproblems

Based on the numbers floating around here the last couple of days, I wish I was a lobbyist. I considered using the word 'check' instead of bill, but my understanding is that 'check' is only really used in this context in the US, and I wanted to appeal to a more international first world crowd.

Nope, ready for this? Jewish! But it's funny you should mention that about Indians... I was out to breakfast last weekend with 3 other people, and an Indian man was sitting at the table next to us, by himself, and he was super chatty. Such a nice guy, but again, very chatty. It turned out he was a big time cardiologist and when our bill came he insisted on paying it, as thanks for keeping him company.
