A Vid Discussing the Downside of "Iraqi Reloads" On AKs by irishsandmanin guns

[–]irishsandman[S] 0 points1 point ago

honestly, he has a strange way of talking. I've been watching his stuff for a while now since he posts a TON of stuff and lives nearby. that said, he often comes off as not being "ready" for a video and can make him less convincing.

I still think this is valuable info. there's a follow up he did (I think the next day?) where he kits up and displays some reloading techniques from cover and how the iraqi reload really doesn't ever give you an advantage unless you were standing in the open (and likely to get shot).

and this might end up being one of them (hostile work environment).

basically if you file a claim and they don't dispute it, especially here in Oregon, you're likely to get unemployment.

disclaimer: I don't think this is what happened in your case, but you asked what could be in that category.

I had that happen once and it took me a few to figure out what it was. I'd bought some company shirts at a conference and they had used wage garnishment to pay for them. just an example of something I've seen go through that way.

A question about Star Wars comics. by gatoquesoin comicbooks

[–]irishsandman 1 point2 points ago

Dark Empire I and II are both pretty good, IMO.

I wish I'd gotten into Tales of the Jedi early on. I'm not really sure what collected stuff to read in which order, but if you can figure it out I know many like the series.

I've been reading the Knights of the Old Republic stuff as it came out, it's not bad.

I think the fight scenes are perfect. especially Harry becoming tired. It makes more sense that him having unlimited reserves of energy. In a fight, you try to end it as quickly as possible or you lose because your opponent(s) is doing the same. So Harry throws the biggest fireball in his arsenal a couple times and when that doesn't work he gets smart.

I suppose it's a little repetitive. Maybe there should be a fight or two that Harry just wins hands down to show that he's come a long way in the power department.

TIL Jack White is a Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by phuqdishitin todayilearned

[–]irishsandman 20 points21 points ago

I'm so confused. the article you link to lists real life 7th sons of 7th sons, and Jack White is not on that list (though the White Stripes are referenced for the song, "Ball and Biscuit" which contains one of the cooler 7th son mentions in my opinion).

Where did you see that he's a 7th son?

and it's pretty awesome that Perry Como and Len Dawson were 7th sons.

yeah, that's the first Nathan Christopher Summers, for sure. NM #87 is widely regarded as the first Cable, though. at least to my knowledge. for what it's worth, I have #201 as well.

it's crazy how many characters in the X-universe have more than one "first appearence" due to cameos or shadows or, in Cable's case, being a baby. :)

Some of my favorite issues I own:

  • Signed Gen-13 0 (by Jim Lee, J. Scott Campbell, and Alex Garner)
  • Signed Danger Girl Preview (by J. Scott Campbell)
  • Signed Spawn 1 (by Todd McFarlane) he also signed the HBO DVD
  • Signed Battlechasers 1 (by Joe Mad)
  • Uncanny X-Men 266 (First Gambit)
  • New Mutants 87 (First Cable)
  • Cyblade/Shi #1 (worth a lot of money for some reason).
  • Uncanny X-Men 117 (Origin of Storm)
  • Wolverine Vol. 2 #1 and #10 (first on-going and major Sabertooth fight)
  • Punisher War Journal #6 (for the Mallrats joke)

Others I didn't bother looking up issue numbers on: first Bishop, a torn up old Uncanny X-men issue that the telling of Cyclops' origin. A signed copy of the first Aliens vs. Predator, a signed Buffy comic, signed JLA International, the Origin comics, an almost complete run of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (what got me into comics).

*note I love DC comics too, and Image and Dark Horse, I just don't have many that are worth much (standard stuff like Death and Rebirth of Superman, Bane breaking Batman's back, I have the first issue of Star Wars: Dark Empire).

I wish I had a Walking Dead #1 and an Uncanny X-Men #1.

Why I'm not worried about any changes being made between the books and the show by csiharin gameofthrones

[–]irishsandman 1 point2 points ago

well I thought FotR was excellent. I found TT original theatrical cut to to be a great film (made even better by the extended cut), but the RotK was pretty bad in my opinion.

It's funny, because I feel the same way factoring in how true they are to the source material of each volume.

I watched each extended cut with the commentary and it was pretty funny because every time they were coming to a part they changed, they would start to give a reason why they changed the scene and then never actually give a reason.

There were some exceptions with pacing in TT and RotK of course, since it was written in such an odd manner on going back and forth between groups.

Someone like me?

Yes. I don't think you were paying enough attention to my OP. I talked about how there are two camps when it comes to changes in the show. One type embraces them, the other tends to reject them.

Would you prefer a show that follows the story in the books as faithfully as possible?

Yes. Otherwise why not make a fantasy show "inspired" by A Song of Ice and Fire instead of adapted. I also realize it won't be 100% faithful, again as I already said, but the changes can be minimized. I'm not alone in the thinking that the show runners are maybe starting to stray a little too far from the path.

The reason why I'm concerned is because it would be a shame if too much changed or was added or omitted as we end book 2 and enter book 3.

[–]irishsandman 2 points3 points ago

yeah, i kinda knew that's what you were going to say. I just disagree. those things might be explained away easily by someone like you, but I feel the same away about 75% of the new added material, too.

Could you give me a few examples of "real" content that you feel should have been included, but was left out?

Off the top of my head? A Clash of Kings Spoilers

I also think that we haven't seen all possible omissions yet. For example: A Clash of Kings book spoiler possible TV speculation

Just my thoughts. Honestly, I'm more disturbed that they might take similar liberties with ASoS which I think should remain fairly untouched. I know that splitting it into two seasons will certainly be interesting.

I appreciate your opinion and the "character building" is probably another reason some of the changes have been good.

however, in your specific example, it's not like book readers were given much insight to them either. but it didn't make our reactions any less real.

First, as others have said, GRRM is not sitting in the director's chair on this show. Producing credits actually can be given to people who never even work on the film/show. Although, we know that he really is providing an unknown level of input in the show and that the show runners are fans. so keep that in mind.

Here's where I'm confused. There's two camps of people and one of those camps is VERY quick to defend changes. But here's my questions to those fans, why? As I said in a pretty heavily supported post the other day, we realize that the whole story can't be in the show and that some minor changes are 100% needed to bridge the edits and make the story make sense.

But there are dozens of changes this season and many of them seem to not serve any purpose to GRRM's story. It feels, to me, very much like the show creators feel the need to put their own spin on the story. But I think Season 1 was so great because it really only made needed changes.

I've heard people say, rather snidely, well what makes those changes bad. I challenge, what makes those changes good?

If we're cutting material from the source for time, then why are we adding non-essential material and making seemingly arbitrary scenes and actions in the plot.

I have really liked some changes made so far. I dig some of them and think they enhanced the story (Arya and Tywin and some others, for example).

Baw, I hate arguing with people about this subject, but it disturbs me when I'm watching half an episode and go "none of this was in the book" because it means there is some REAL content that was taken out to allow for it.

Do any other book readers feel this way about this season? by MentalPressurein gameofthrones

[–]irishsandman 36 points37 points ago

I'm not trying to argue with you, but I am curious why you think so many changes are "necessary" for the adaptation?

I mean, omissions are certainly needed to bring the source to the screen in under 40 hours of screen time, sure. and some small changes are needed to bridge those gaps, granted. but the first season was able to be much more faithful without "necessary" changes wasn't it?

I'm not saying I don't like this season, but I wonder why it "needs" to stray so much and I'd really like an answer from someone who believes that's the case.

thanks!

it's really open to interpretation. so no one can truly say "yes" no matter how many times you ask. people read that statement with so much bias.

A boy could make a friend... by MrCalumin gameofthrones

[–]irishsandman 2 points3 points ago

I think a lot of it is that people don't have very good sound set-ups.

many people are watching cheap flat screen sets with either stock speaker (the size of a quarter) or home theater in a box set-ups that deliver horrid sound pictures. on top of that, sound mixers have gotten very very out of whack. shows aren't normalized as well as they could be.

on top of all of that, if you're not a book reader and never saw the name spelled out, you probably we're lost as fuck trying to hear him say his name. many book readers are waiting to hear certain names and words said aloud so we're paying a bit more attention.

Finished Book Three, Grave Peril by toliventin dresdenfiles

[–]irishsandman 1 point2 points ago

yeah, we're starting the story in the middle of Harry's life. and we don't truly get to know everything (people pop up from the past).

I kind of like that Butcher doesn't spend too much time explaining each new person. But you always get contextual clues and by the time something major is revealed, you pretty much already "know" the character.
