Okay. I got some chops as an artist. Where should I jump in? Is there logo work being done? UI elements that need a color or theme? What can those of us with no code skills do?

sweet lord. If you brought any level of standardization to the cataloging of Torrents in any capacity, you'll be my hero. The searchability of content is one of the overall barriers to the expansion of Torrents as a form of competition.

really. It does 3 things well, but that's it.

  1. Lets you bring just audio or just video to the timeline quickly.

  2. The position tool & no collisions is kinda neat if you're willing to embrace the new environment.

  3. It makes a decent iMovie Pro.

First Time Post Production Supervisor ... Help? by ItsARealThingin Filmmakers

  • Co-ordinate with the Director. Learn when dailies will be ready to hand off to Editors. schedule that timeline for ingest and transcode with your editors. This way you guys get rolling ASAP. The Post environment, especially for student films has really bloated to be about as long as production (mostly from fixing mistakes). Be mindful of the lengthy timeline you may be facing, and try to get your work started while principal is still shooting.

  • Attend all production meetings. Anytime someone says "we'll do it in Post" your job is to make the case the Post Team is already overloaded; why can't the scene just be shot correctly the first time. The more you can get the Production Team to do properly the more time it will save everyone. Be mindful of when to be flexible though, pick your battles. However, try to keep production during the production; not after.

  • Pour over the script for all non-didactic diagetic (off-set) sound, it will be the responsibility of Audio in Post. Get them to start rounding up sound clips.

  • Review the script for all scenes with difficult lighting and difficult audio. Talk with your post team about trap-falls Production can avoid. Be on set those days to help communicate those risks to the Director in the moment. Be willing to speak up if you think something needs to be reshot, but it's still the Director's final decision.

  • Know what your Editor can and can't do. And quiz him/her. It's not rare for students to overspeak their software skills only to use your project as a chance to learn on the job. If you've got something significant that needs to be done, like compositing, and your editor "claims" to know it... get a different person, it'll take too long otherwise.

  • Keep duplicates of all your assets. IF you are in the position where someone isn't making the cut and you have to find a different post person, they usually don't take it well. Make sure anyone you may have to fire doesn't have the only copy of footage. p.s. you may have to fire any one of your subordinates.

  • Ask the director what they expect of you. Don't bug them, but if they think you're falling behind say something like; "I've got X,Y, and Z covered right now... what did you have in mind I'd be doing?" Communicate what you accomplished so they don't think you're really slacking, and make it an issue of mis-identified objectives.

  • Remember. You are in a leadership position. It doesn't matter if it was your mistake, or your fuckup, if you don't fix it. It's your fault. Be ready to take responsibility when you have to, and face it like an adult. Fix whatever else you have to so it doesn't look like you fucked up.

  • Also, ask for help. Not necessarily from your crew. Remember, Familiarity breeds contempt for the ignorant. Ask your Profs for advice; Hell you're paying them for their knowledge. Talk with them. Then come to the internutz.

I used to teach FCPX for Apple Retail. Here are some takeaways from my side:

  • Be careful what you ingest. Background Rendering is greedy regarding clip management. You can't get rid of a clip till all background rendering is done. Be mindful.

  • Taking just audio or just video to the timeline is fantastic. Way easier than it used to be.

  • Garbage Mattes and some old layer/filtering tricks don't work so well in the new FCPX. You'll need to experiment to re-create some of what was familiar. Or swing by an Apple Store and ask if a Creative is free. They were all learning tips and tricks to accomodate.

  • Don't trust the image stabilization. It's the same from iMovie. As in, zoom in slightly, and keep a center object focused. It's good, but not great.

  • Assume more of your post work will be done in After Effects. FCPX is much more of an editing program than the all-in-one it used to be. Keeping that in mind will keep down the frustration.

  • It's still new software and struggles with lengthy projects. Look at breaking your long works into smaller projects with their own storyline.

  • Check out how to use Disk Image sparsebundles to store your projects. Arguably one of the coolest new features.

But for me. I like the old FCP better, and am making the switch to Premiere.

it is incredibly difficult to chemically and therefore legally identify and define when someone is currently "high" making under the influence cases difficult.

When someone is driving drunk a breathalyzer and sobriety test work hand in hand to show a chemical limit has been exceded and physical behavior confirms the risk.

When someone is high, they can hide it, it's not often on their breath, you can pass a sobriety test, and the way THC processes and leaves the body, you can't take an immediate sample of levels and equate that to being high in the moment. Makes the regulation side of the issue very difficult.

However, the moment that is overcome I've got no issues at all, but without enforcement in place to curb anyone that abuses the privilege of use you wind up with a culture of flagrant abuse.

Demonoid flags torrents for being "external" these are the public torrents that Demonoid has just picked up. They are your biggest risk... But truthfully Demonoid has been up and down a lot over the years with an increasingly lax approach to low profile & user security, it's effectively The Pirate Bay with a login.

The best thing to do is use a more secure and obscure private tracker for your new material, and go to Demonoid for things that are older and out of the focus of the MPAA and other legal teams.

Okay. I got about half-way through before I had to stop. Notes:

  • Learn how to place your camera. Most of your shots are poorly framed with too deep of a focal length. You've got great inefficiency in your shots and poor framing. When Gasmask is cooking, that can be broken into a series of POV shots on what he's making, it can be structured like a cooking show, many ways. But you chose to focus on a medium shot, where we can't see his face, and the cooking action is largely cut off below his waist. The episode is full of cuts like this.

  • Use a damn tripod, or at least a better one. The camera shake is unacceptable. You've established an omniscient view of the action. The camera isn't truly a person in the room. Just a detached observer. Don't let it move & shake around like a person.

  • Lighting. You have none. Learn how to set key, back, and fill lights. Understanding lighting will go a long way to making your scenes look better.

  • Mic your talent. There are background hums and empty space with their speaking. You clearly don't have a lav on them.

  • It looks like you're shooting in your home. Fix that. Sure, Clown Face has a nice innocent place to live, but the color palates don't match your character costumes. Lighting will help with this, but also make sure your characters are wearing colors that don't blend with your walls. You're stuck with a deep wine color in a room, everyone wears brighter clothes.

  • Your girl has black hair, is wearing all black, and has olive skin. Too many darks, you can't read her face. Should have put her in a vibrant colored dress and pulled her hair back. Details. It's all about details.

*Gas Mask needs a better costume. More details. All black and a mask where I can't see his face demands either incredible physical comedy acting, or some kind of prop that stands in for his emotional states. Think Chaplain and his cap.

  • Consider color grading in post. Up the saturations in Clown Face. He's washed out. Better lighting will help, but smart color work in Post can go a long way too.

  • Faster edits. You're clearly toying with non sequitur, but you won't jump in all the way. Your editing style can help. Look at YouTube Poops videos, and study some of the great random Adult Swim Cartoons. Harvey Birdman, and Aqua-teen are easy and obvious choices, but I'd encourage you to also review Delocated since it's live action.

The things you're doing well:

  • You're making something and getting it on the web. Don't discount what a HUGE hurdle this first step is. Be proud of that, be glad you got something started.

  • The writing actually isn't bad. I thought the line of questioning Clown Face had with the girl was well delivered and pretty weird, if not entirely funny. It did want me to see what else would happen. Just technical issues were keeping me from falling into the show.

Address your technical issues, and you should have a considerably better product in the end.

The opening exploratory committees of the 2008 election. It was one of the biggest and most exciting elections in history, and it intersected perfectly with the rise of social media. 2005/2006 was when the engine was just starting to warm up.

Sites like Reddit were the tool; the Election was the narrative superbowl event to focus the narrative and energies of the internet.

Right, but I'm still talking about 64bit systems. 64bit processors are limited to "only" 16 exabytes. Not exactly a "real-world" amount of RAM.

I got me one of those 4 month old monsters. She's awesome. I also have the added bonus of freelance contracts that let me hang at home most days while still getting paid. It makes babies even more fun to see them grow day to day.

Babies may be small and cute, but remember they're processing and discovering the world around them, and while they can't talk there are infinite ways to entertain yourself by fucking around with them.

Also when they smile at you. Baby smiles are awesome.

As for FCP X, the comments about it now are very similar to what professionals said about the early versions of FCP. FCP X might not be professional now, but who's to say what it will be like given enough time and what future users will want to be using, especially of they started with the inexpensive prosumer software first.

This is the most common defense of the software that I hear, and truth is.. Time will tell. I clearly stand on the more cynical side of the issue. I feel an à la carte model for professional video software is risky because it masks the true expense of the program. You tell editors it's 300 bucks to get professional grade software, but you need plugins for just about everything professional. Hard sell.

It also can't import old FCP projects, but you can import iMovie projects? I don't know the rationale behind that decision, but it reads as a HUGE fuck you to editors that are open minded about the new program.

Background rendering is great in theory, but dominates your ingest process in practicality. You brought in the wrong clip? Oh sorry, you can't delete it till the background render for EVERYTHING is complete. You paused your render? Too bad. It's still not done, you still can't take a clip out of your Event Library.

Want to Color Grade? Well, get ready for incredibly attractive scopes and a useless color board designed for iMovie students to learn and understand.

And the list goes on... I was teaching a regular Master's Class on the new FCP at our store, and I became pretty familiar with the program, and I am incredibly skeptical it can overcome it's horrible horrible launch. Not in software improvements, but in image. I don't ever think this program will get past the assumption that Apple delivered iMovie Pro.

And the thing is, it does a few things well. But what it does well isn't worth it.
