Can we have a discussion on using circles (area or radius) to represent and compare data? by BrainSturgeonin visualization

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

Often, plotting an axillary variable as size, color, etc is more helpful than trying to plot e.g. a third dimension.

Java8 Lambda Expressions – Perhaps not as sexy as intended? by gtaniin java

Interesting. Not sure how excited to be. I take it that the kind of generic functions he describes are not part of the new API?

3x3 stairs. Why? by shiigentin dwarffortress

[–]inspired2apathy 4 points5 points ago

While we're on the subject, can dwarves still fall down multiple up/down stairs?

3x3 stairs. Why? by shiigentin dwarffortress

[–]inspired2apathy 2 points3 points ago

Do they ever use the middle stair? I was using a 3 up + 3 down for a 3-wide hallway, but noticed nobody ever used the middle ones. I've switched to 2-wide, and everything seems just as efficient.

I don't know, it still sounds better to me than trying to eke out .01% profit on high frequency trades.

I think people are misunderstanding the term "Long Term Support". by linux_addin Ubuntu

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

Because you should update but as with anything, the first iteration of it will not be as stable as later ones.

Right, but the update-manager is magic. You don't pay attention to what's changing, you just let it do what it wants. And as you've stated multiple times, casual users shouldn't update right away. All I'm saying is that cannonical should explain that to people.

If a few bugs will make you abandon an OS every time you update it ...

For people coming from windows, they won't have a frame of reference. A move from 11.10 to 12.04 is not comparable to anything they'd experience in windows or even Mac OS.

Moving from 11.10 to 12.04 is more like going from Windows Vista to Windows 7 than installing a big service pack. I just don't think that is communicated well enough to users. Average Windows Vista users wouldn't be prompted to download (and pay for) Windows 7 on the day of its release, so why should Cannonical think they should do so for ubuntu?

I think people are misunderstanding the term "Long Term Support". by linux_addin Ubuntu

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

Right, so then why does it show up as a default action. Casual users see "Oh look, an UPDATE. Everyone says you're supposed to stay updated." and just go for it. People may have heard some press and seen some pretty pictures and just want it cause it's new. I think it would be better for everyone if they made it clear that it's advisable to wait: users not getting surprised/disappointed/frustrated/abandon ubuntu, developers/cannonical having a more gradual flow of users/bugs/anger, etc.

Yeah, machine learning might not be the best target audiences but signal processing is a big deal.

Has anyone ever found a more space-efficient way to house dorfs than Modified Windmill Villas? by NaricssusIIIin dwarffortress

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

Isn't it often better to have a smaller horizontal distance and another one or 2 vertical stair columns? I have modified versions of some of these designed around columns of stairs about as close as the farthest bedroom. This way, most dwarfs can get to their bed in fewer horizontal steps. I'm not sure what this does to the computational costs of pathing, though.

Why the F*** don't we build a high speed rail system in the United States? by hxcbandbattlerin politics

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

Yup, and that's about the best you can find anywhere in the US. We designed our subarbs for cars and most people live in subarbs.

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

most major cities don't have the local infrastructure

This is what people forget. There are very few us cities where it would at all reasonable to travel to without a car. Maybe NYC, DC, Chicago, San Francisco. There are a couple others where you can make it work at a great time cost (not exactly desirable on vacation). At best you've got some confusing buses with irregular schedules. Hell, Pittsburgh's even considering eliminating the only public transportation from the city to the airport.

The problem is that those places were the most people live are mostly spread out, except for the east and west coasts where high speed rail project have been started.

Alright Reddit, what are your positions on polygamy? by xNEM3S1Sxin AskReddit

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

I've heard arguments that widespread polygamy could be harmful to society since it leads to concentration of women/men in roughly the same way wealth/power is concentrated. If substantial portions of the population see few prospects for finding a mate/family, they're less engaged in society and it could lead to anti-social behavior. For example, lots of single men in China is currently problematic. I've also heard polygamy as an explanation for why so many men become suicide bombers. Not sure if there's any sense to that, though.

Isn't this frenzy over gay marriage an answer to the wrong question? Shouldn't the question be: Why is government involved with marriage in the first place? by veoeluzin politics

[–]inspired2apathy 4 points5 points ago

But marriage doesn't say you get to be in the hospital room with them. The hospital determines that, and we need social institutions to make it easier to have reasonable policies about things.

Statistical assumption is flawed? by presdaddyin statistics

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

Well, a lack of homoskedasticity would introduce unfairness. People might have systematically more variability for harder tests (better students do even more better than average, worse students do even more worse than average).

[–]inspired2apathy 0 points1 point ago

Homoskedasticity. Harder tests might have a different variance structure.

Looks cool, but I'm not a big fan of hurry up and wait. You got my attention but who knows where it'll be when you actually put out a release, especially without any other info, e.g. licensing programming paradigms, etc.
