(Spoilers ALL) Frey Motives by sayheygiantsin asoiaf

[–]insllvn 1 point2 points ago

I meant the other time, but you make a strong point in favor of my argument that he then gets captured again because he started a fight that he could not possibly win with someone who was charged with bringing him to the place he wanted to go. His brother and sister talk about it a couple of times. Jaime is his sword hand. He doesn't think, he acts.

Jaime gets recaptured several times. In fact, prior to his humbling loss, Jaime seems to suck pretty hard at being a tactical commander. Now as a hostage he would present an enormous opportunity.

The Freys fostered at Winterfell play a game with Bran and the Reeds called Lord of the Crossing as I remember it. In the game 1 player stands on a bridge and the other players must convince him to let them cross. The lord of the crossing gets a stick and may try to knock the other players into the water if they don't keep their promise. The trick is to say Mayhaps, so your promise doesn't count. You can get knocked into the water for being caught saying Mayhaps, but if you don't get called on it you can break your promise and unseat the Lord of the Crossing, provided you can overcome the stick. Frey chastises Robb for not saying Mayhaps and then peppers his dialogue with it while serving his "guests" but Robb doesn't know the rules.

NEW POLLING: 56% of Americans Want Legal Marijuana by erikNORMLin politics

As I recall the American Navy played a large role in the Barbery wars as well. Further, hemp was used by the British Royal Navy, which I think you will agree was a Navy of some significance. Indeed, both countries once accepted the payment of taxes in valuable hemp fiber. The economy of early New England was largely dependent on shipbuilding both to service the Navy and for sale and trade. And for that reason, and that the most durable of clothing was produced from hemp fibers, those who owned sufficient farmable land were required to devote some portion of their lands to the cultivation of hemp. Here is a Popular Mechanics article from 1938 about the potential of hemp as a local cash crop. It presents several cogent arguments for how hemp was poised to be a global industry of great value prior to the invention of synthetic fibers and the criminalization of cannabis cultivation. None of this takes in to account the need for a fuel source to replace oil. Did you know that the first Model-T ran on hemp seed oil? We should be growing hemp more than we grow of anything else.

You've thrown out two numbers so far: 1.8 million jobs in beer and >1 million jobs in agriculture. From these figures we know that if you consider the lifecycle of a crop which is refined into a recreational beverage some people enjoy demands more labor that comes in on the non-agricultural side of things. Therefore, since we have been discussing the uses of cannabis in an industrial setting we can reason that saying cannabis cultivation and industrialization will not create 1 million jobs because >1 million people work in agricultural jobs in the US to be fallacious because most jobs in the industrialization process will not come from the agricultural side of the operation. Further, if we compare hemp to hops, they are closely related don't you know, we must take into consideration the numerous extra uses to which cannabis might be refined and put. I submit to you that if we do not correct for job migration (people who did something else before, but after the law changes grow, refine, transport or sell some part of the cannabis plant) then the numbers you have furnished for the beer industry make the case. In truth, I think most of the jobs "created" by legalizing would be offset by the jobs lost amongst prisons and law enforcement sectors or migratory rather than all new sources of employment. Still, I don't think it fair to say the notion is rediculous.

The greatest benefit comes from all the places where you can sub in some byproduct of the hemp plant (a renewable resource) for some common use of oil (a finite resource). Plastics, fuels and foodstuffs can all be synthesized from the cannabis plant. Cannabis has already been a billion dollar cash crop and the driving force behind the growth of a new economy. It was as such in the early days of the United States of America. The strength of the American Navy was first built on hempen ropes and sails. We aren't talking about exclusively new industries, we are talking about restarting old industries, allowing economies of scale to take over for new industries and cultivating a locally grown source of renewable energy at home.

Game of Thrones got it right again last night: "Why are all the gods such vicious cunts?" by ajmccul2in atheism

I don't trust the Singers or Bloodraven any more than you do, but we don't have the evidence to level either claim against them. I reckon the thing about this world is that their are a number of opposed forces. I think it would be better to say demiurges than gods, but I have seen some evidence of three distinct sides to this conflict. There are the prophesies of flame and the magic of the red priests in service to the fire and the fire is always hungry. I believe the fire consumed Old Valyria, but that is mere speculation and there were almost certainly other factors at play. The old gods whisper in green dreams and live in the dark places they wear like cloak and armor. They seem to me to have a lot in common with Melisandre's conception of the great other. She sees Bloodraven and Bran in the fire and thinks them her enemies. However, we know from histories and their own lips that they are at war with the Others. One explanation could be they are lying. The Singers and the Others are in collusion and represent the same side in a dualist struggle. Another possibility, I think, is that the Old Gods represent the green demiurge as Melisandre and Moqorro represent the red demiurge or fire. The green is life and as such has dominion over the plants and the animals, birds in the sky and fish in the sea and so on in such fashion. Their magic is warging and remote viewing and they even glimpse into the past and future. Both are opposed to the power of death and cold that are represented in the Others and their wights, but for different reasons. There is also the outside possibility that the seven and/or the drowned god factor into all of this, but I have seen no, well little, evidence for either.

I can't believe this is a response to a post in r/atheism and not r/asoiaf.

[–]insllvn 1 point2 points ago

You've got that wrong, I think. We don't yet know if the Old Gods fit a traditional definition of godhood, true enough, but we now know what they are: greenseers bonded with weirwood trees. I tend to think that there are a variety of sources for magical power and they are worshiped as gods by various different folks. Take Melisandre for example. She has some power of prophecy and knowledge of other spells and concoctions. Essentially, she is a kind of wizard. However, she learned this magic from a group who profess the belief that it comes from the Red God. This belief makes her a priest, but her belief does not prove the existence of R'hellor. Given that it was told her by those who taught her the magics, it is relatively reasonable for Melisandre to accept the existence of R'hellor as it is an explanation for her powers. Still, we do not know if that is an accurate picture of her magics or merely the belief structure that grew up around an ancient order of sorcerors. Mayhaps they worship some demon, certainly fits with the voice Varys heard in the flames, or mayhaps there is no R'hellor at all. Perhaps calling Melisandre's magic the work of the Red God is like calling electricity and electronic devices the work of Thor.

George Takei: "I respect people's right to their faith." Howard Stern: "I don't! Not if their faith makes other people miserable." by sirshartsalotin atheism

[–]insllvn -1 points0 points ago

What you originally said was incorrect because the quote we are discussing talks about not respecting beliefs. You have taken that to mean denying people rights, but it does not appear anywhere in the quotation. Stern keeps insisting that he does not need to show respect for belief structures guilty of disrespecting others.

Your question indicates that you still don't grasp my point about making a straw man. Of course no one is suggesting that Fox News is proof that everybody lies. It is the best example of profitable liars. Do you think that Fox is the only example? You want to talk newspapers, let's talk yellow journalism. Let's talk about Pulitzer and Hearst. I have to go to work now, but I will go find some more modern examples when I get home.

Well, whatever you do, don't explain your point better. Your doing great, just reiterate the same sentiment a bit more condescendingly each time.

  1. You stated that lying is bad for business. False, as Fox lies and they have the highest ratings and make the most money.

  2. You assume people are downvoting you because they disagree. False, some are downvoting you for strawmaning. See above and compare it to your strawman about how Fox lying makes everyone liars.

  3. You stated that TV and newspapers are different mediums. Correct, TV news makes money. Refer to point number 1.

It would not amuse. The difference, if I may, is in the value or meaning you place in the word. Christians you disagree with aren't true because, to you, the concept of christian has value outside of a summation of belief in the divinity myth of the christ figure. You are just being a bigot against christians with different ideas and justifications. Atheism is the lack of a belief in a deity. You see atheists do it all the time around these parts, equating that absence with the presence of laudable qualities. Still, no one I've ever seen jumps from "I don't like your ideas" to "you are a fake atheist!" It doesn't cause my worldview any problems to know of atheists who are despicable, but it is a huge problem for you if someone learned hate from Jesus. It chisels away at the majesty of revelation if the infallible could not make himself understood. So, the hateful atheist is just a dick, but the hateful christian is a charlatan who has not let christ into their heart, otherwise Jesus power is suspect for it is less than perfect.

Varys tells Kevan that he needs to die to prevent the stability he might have restored which would hinder the rise of Aegon. Kevan was absolutely not going to restore Cersei to power. He was sending her back to the Rock, away from Tommen and the Tyrells, where she can do no further damage.

That was an excellent summary! I am running AOKP M5, was running M4 before that and stock before that. On stock I had the problem where my radio would lose signal for a few minutes (10-20) and only a reboot would get it back more quickly. On M4, I had problems with wi-fi handoffs to CDMA. Only switching off wi-fi would get data to function properly. However, I no longer had issues with radio drops. On M5, I have neither problem. Are you sure they all use original drivers for radio?

So, what confuses me is why you think your backup copies are less valuable than the "originals" on your phone. It's a digital copy, all the same ones and zeros.
