Windows Whaaat??? by iAmSikleein talesfromtechsupport

[–]indrora 1 point2 points ago

It uses Vol Shadow Copy, which is what Previous Versions is, but it also brings System Restore into the picture. Plus its own voodoo magic.

moral of the story: Despite only keeping 3 SR points, those 3 points may just save your ass

Suggest a corporate license for the Piriform Recuva tool. It can mostly recover 99% of everything.

It works, actually.

I can vouch for this. I blasted some important shit out of system32 for shits+giggles, hit "System Reset". IT WORKED.

MAGIC.

As a fun fact, Siri can run on just about any iPhone, legally, too. it does require an iPhone 4S for setup, but that's not hard to borrow for 5 minutes.

This will get buried to hell, but I'll say it here:

I don't think you guys are getting it -- Siri relies on Apple's network in order to actually process your voice, since there probably isn't enough computational power in the phone to actually transcribe, and then go and actually use that data. Plus, it would be horribly painful to store each kind of pattern (e.g. "Siri, I want a sandwich", "I'm feeling like sandwiches", "Where's a good place to get sandwiches", "Does anyone near me make a good pastrami sandwich", etc!) since your'e talking hundreds of gigs of pattern data. You don't push that to a phone.

Traditional voice-systems rely on rigid, inflexible patterns (e.g. "Call Bob Mobile 1") that don't work so well when you try talking naturally (e.g. "Call bob's mobile").

Also, if you read through Dragon Natually Speaking's ToS, you'll find a few interesting lines, like "The user shall not threaten the system with mortal death", etc. in one version I worked with).

Does it surprise me Apple is stashing this? No, since you can use it for vocal encoding patterns (how many ways arethere to say "I want a sandwich"?) -- Google does it for all their GVoice users, and even encourages them to fix things.

All businesses are in it for the money. You can't argue anything past that. Wired Mag had an article some time ago, talking about how Target can tell if a woman is pregnant before she can and instantly begins sending coupons for diapers, formula, etc -- And they have a 99% hit rate based on what they buy.

Information rules this world. Stop bitching that people are collecting it.

There's plenty of things "of value" in a system that's had a flathead jammed into the micro at high velocity. Like the heatsink, aluminum (sometimes steel, more valuable) case, cd/etc bays, hdds, etc.

"How Do I See What I've Written?" by bakka88in talesfromtechsupport

Yes, in fact. My mechanic and I have a good chuckle when I say something with the authority of God and I turn out to be horribly wrong, and I find out I've been wrong for years. Happened the other day with the overall design of my engine.

Humility is a great thing. I've imparted it on quite a few users over the years.

For those confused, It was supposed to be a pun on the phrase "loosing water", but nobody got that the water-brush was mis-aligned when they released.

This made me laugh, then cry. More laugh, but still a good sob. Probably from the laughter.

I feel sorry for this woman. Just like I feel sorry for someone who shits their pants on the subway.

Okay. I can't fix the second problem, since that's Windows being stupid. First problem is something I can look into (I'm testing it right now)... I know it can be slow (It looks like it crashes, is really just churning through).

Third. is one I'll have to look into.

Got a new job, now I have to learn to do this. by MacGuyverismin FoodPorn

[–]indrora 1 point2 points ago

Hmm.. I'll shoot on guessing the process (Its beautiful, by the way and some of the beauty comes from the process)

  • start with: prepared apples, orange slices, skinned oranges[1] , strawberries, raspberry, pineapple, crepe (appears to be a thicker crepe, as opposed to a paper-thin one), green garnish[2]
  • place 1/2c strawberries and 1/2c skinned oranges on crepe. Wrap.
  • place fanned apple, slices of pineapple, two pairs of orange-slice garnish and green garnish.
  • place half-strawberry garnish, apple-tower garnish
  • drizzle raspberries (5) over plate
  • drizzle raspberry sauce over plate
  • dust lightly with powdered sugar

There's a lot of prep-work for this, some of which is usable within other dishes (e.g. strawberries, oranges, crepes) but it looks delicious. Frankly, it looks delicious without the garnish, and I need breakfast round 2 now.

(Forgive me, I like my crepes filled with cream cheese, cottage cheese, ricotta and sour creme, since I grew up with blitzes as the main filling of crepes)

[1] May be mandarin oranges, but I'm dissecting a picture...

[2] It looks like Aloe leaf. I can't tell, but it comes close.

My local library was using Gopher for the longest time. You could query by isbn or author, and it was pretty awesome, and you could check out. It wasn't until they moved to using lib#+PIN.
