I was just going by what the original length was as set by the Copyright act of 1790. There is a more recent study that says a total of 14 years is optimal. Here it is (32pg pdf). Arstechnica did a story about it a few years ago.

If all four of them stay in the race till the end Romney might not have 1144 by the convention. Newt will still win delegates in a few southern states, Paul will gather delegates here and there especially in caucuses, and Santorum will do well in quite a few midwestern states. Romney will win some of the big winner-take-all states like NY and CA but if he loses Texas his path to 1144 is not easy. Then the convention becomes a free for all and someone like Chris Christie or JEB Bush could come in, or any of the original 4 could win. A convention like that has not happened in a long time and I think it would be interesting to watch.
