I want to understand how you would code a chat system... by phaggocytosisin webdev

[–]ikean 0 points1 point ago*

Oh, and what's interesting in node.js is that to write a webpage... you actually start by writing the web server!

edit: Could whoever down-voted this be so kind as to show some etiquette attach an explanation? A down-vote isn't saying much on it's own, especially considering my statement is entirely true, lol

I want to understand how you would code a chat system... by phaggocytosisin webdev

[–]ikean 5 points6 points ago*

The web was built to transfer documents. Once a document is sent, the connection is closed. The "new" web wants to do more than transfer documents, however the new web still runs as the original document transfer protocol. So we invented new tricks. One is to jam the connection open and not let it close so we can fabricate a streaming service. This is called long polling and Socket.io can fall back on this. We also have just begun to develop new technologies (in HTML5) that can support this without being a hack. This is what WebSockets are. Now... with all that said, this is chat systems running over HTTP document sharing protocol. Not-over-HTTP a chat is essentially trivial since TCP connections (how computers connect to one another) are naturally persistent, nothing requires them to close. Interestingly, you use TCP to connect to a HTTP web server on port 80, however it is the webserver (usually Apache) that abruptly closes down the connection because of the directive of the HTTP protocol.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to fail my introductory Linux class this semester. What are some good ways of preparing myself for the next time I attempt this class? by druid_king9884in linux4noobs

[–]ikean 1 point2 points ago

How does this happen? Isn't the point of an introductory course simply teach you to use the OS? It sounds like you just slacked off, I'm not sure that requires Linux preparation.

The CoD Calendar by cronoizmin gaming

[–]ikean 4 points5 points ago

I've maintained BlackOps to be the better game since the get-go, and the new meme of these graphs confuse me a bit because I'm surprised a large number of people didn't have the same perspective: After MW2, and the dismantling of Infinity Ward, I did NOT have high hopes for MW3... and though it wasn't as bad as I expected, it was certainly not much better than mediocre.

The brilliant philosophy of a 1st grader. by I_REMOVE_COCKSin pics

[–]ikean 1 point2 points ago

If it makes you feel any better, you should consider his actual intention was likely more basic, about enjoying something quietly, like a sunset; Not the more philosophic "everyone should quit their complaints, violence and disagreement to recast an appreciation for the world". It may have been (or probably was) just poorly worded into a deeper meaning.

Problems with Ubuntu 12.04 installation by vanoccupantherin linux4noobs

[–]ikean 0 points1 point ago

Yep I had that exact same thing. Also my package manager had issues. I ended up downloading the install CD from my Windows partition and entirely erasing my previous (failed) installation and re-installing from the CD. I lost all my previous settings/data/configuration/etc, but I didn't have all that much, and I didn't want to risk having some quirky/wonky/broken install.

Problems with Ubuntu 12.04 installation by vanoccupantherin linux4noobs

[–]ikean 1 point2 points ago

My upgrade path was from a recent-ish 11 to 12 on a Dell laptop dual booting windows 7. Everything was going smoothly until near the very end of installation everything froze and went to a black screen. I gave it some time hoping it would "finish" but had to shutdown my computer like you mentioned. When I rebooted, I was able to see the 12 login screen, and to log in, but it was clear that the installation had failed before finish and had issues.

JavaScript maintainer wants to remove jQuery from core by ao5357in drupal

[–]ikean 0 points1 point ago

I support this idea from the perspective of jQuery being so tightly coupled with Drupal 6 core that we became limited and relegated into carefully maintaining an antiquated jQuery < 1.3(.5?) or else the framework would face crippling consequence (like no longer being able to use Views, for instance).

How Arabs hear American's english by shirtfacein videos

[–]ikean -1 points0 points ago

I travel to Europe every year and have asked this same question plenty of times. Being west coast American I firmly believe my English is the absolute most straight-forward, simplistic, and devoid of unusual dialect or pronunciations both within the US and the world. However, the answer is generally not so polarized, much like the "it's all sort of the same" answers below. It's important to realize, the reason for this is because Europeans are taught BRITISH English in schools. It is the English they hear and attempt speak from the get-go. They also find it more simplistic at times like the comment about "R" from Carninator below. This makes it very difficult for them to recognize the simplicity in American English. By this same token, I've had Australian kids with awesome thick accents on XBOX live adamantly proclaim to me, in sincerity without bravado, that I'm the one with the accent.

Pit bull chair... she does this all the time by Polamoleculesin aww

[–]ikean 2 points3 points ago*

I've noticed pit bulls seem to have an strong insecurity about company and affirmation. You'd probably have a better sense than myself, but I feel that this would be more about that (a feeling of assurance/closeness/safety) than "dominance".

Android abduction? by hcsLabsin Android

[–]ikean 0 points1 point ago

If it's anything like my phone (Galaxy S) the app probably froze for a while because the phone decided to "launch everything!" in the background or concocted some other task to entirely overwhelm itself and become unresponsive (usually when I need it most, like when I'm in immediate need of directions).

My money is still on Batman by r2002in comics

[–]ikean 6 points7 points ago

Losing to Galactus means he devours you and everyone you know. Batman would be a no more difficult morsel to digest than anyone else when the planet goes. Galactus losing, on the other hand, simply means he goes away... for now. Batman will wither away and die of old age in a time span that may as well be an instant for Galactus... while he "is and forever will be".

My money is still on Batman by r2002in comics

[–]ikean 5 points6 points ago

Comic debates are about as successful as religious debates, however, I'd still like to point out that regarding reasoning: Galactus acts something like a balance in the Universe, is practically omniscient, and eats planets inhabited by sentient life... I'm not sure he cares much for Batman's reasoning. =P

[–]ikean 20 points21 points ago*

Realize... in the same way Batman has to win by compelling narrative, Galactus has to lose. He is a grand-cosmic entity who created the Silver Surfer (who could probably handle the FF on his own) and some of the most powerful COSMIC super-heroes/villains recognized in Marvel, but he cannot exactly simply EAT EARTH... in a franchise that for the most part takes place on Earth.

I too find it interesting and fascinating (probably more than I should) that normal people live in what to me is a motel setting.

In Oregon / Washington, apartments are almost entirely either A) You walk up to the 3rd story, walk into a door which takes you inside to a hallway, and then walk into your apartment. or B) Similar except the "landing" hallway is open to the outside, but still at least covered/internal (as in, no doors to any home open except to a hallway and facing each other, unlike the photo).

edit: I thought of a better analogy. The apartments in the photo look like a motel and I've never seen anything like that. Our apartments look like hotels.
