Cryptozoology and Pseudoscience by sci101in skeptic

[–]idoubtit00 8 points9 points ago

Amateurs CAN do science. It's been very successful in fields of astronomy, palaeontology, bird counts (Audubon does these surveys with backyard birders) and various individuals finding something unique and taking it to people who are qualified to look at it. The problem with amateur cryptozoologists (paranormal investigators and ufologists) is that they have their own insular community that is shut off from science. There are many skeptics and scientists who would help them understand the "evidence" they are collecting but various roadblocks exist to cooperation.

(I am the author of the linked piece, BTW. There is a longer piece on amateurs doing sciencey things in the Mar/Apr issue of Skeptical Inquirer.)

I'd say there are many more legitimate "physicians" that do this just by numbers alone.

I agree with Daimonax. This really isn't a "skeptic" issue.

Is it true that full moon nights affect the behaviour of the humans? by Faryshtain skeptic

That's just what you remember but don't confirm. It gives credence to the myth. But when actually tested, without the subjective human element, it doesn't pan out. http://www.skepdic.com/fullmoon.html

Yes, you aren't a big body like the ocean. You are very tiny. Try the math out. Mass and distance is part of the equation. You are influenced more by the earth than the pull of the moon very far away.

The Paranormal Awareness Society - A "Research" Group who "empirically" "investigates" the paranormal. by ThisisaThrowAway88in skeptic

[–]idoubtit00 1 point2 points ago

They would be hard pressed to even define what "empirical" means and how to apply it. Unless they think it means beeping and flashing gadgets, recording EVPs and taking pictures of blurry, wispy things. 90% of these paranormal groups are exactly the same. Highly unscientific. But they fool the public who does not know the difference between scientific and "scientifical" http://scientifical.info

I was talking real life here, not philosophical arguments, though. A scientific fact is about as incontrovertible as you can get. 99% or more, essentially = truth.
