/r/Android, what are some good all-around Android devices? by vcarlin Android

4G is the issue here, It's a vampire

/r/Android, what are some good all-around Android devices? by vcarlin Android

[–]icky_boo 0 points1 point ago

The Galaxy Nexus isn't top of the line, It's a mid high end device from last generation. Top of the line phones are the soon to be SGSIII and HTC One X series.

I would recommend a Moto Razr Maxx but it's got a locked bootloader and it's last generation now.

I say go get a SGSIII or HTC One X and install JuiceDefender or Green Power and disable 4G manually with maybe a widget. The SGSIII seems to be a decent battery device even though it doesn't have high capacity like the Maxx

Family plan, I want to switch to Sprint but won't be able to soon. Think the December batch of Nexus phones will outclass the Galaxy III? by DoctorStevein Android

[–]icky_boo 0 points1 point ago

Nexus devices are there to showcase Android not have bleeding edge hardware. Just look at the past 3 devices. They tend to use tried and tested hardware so I highly doubt it will be better then a SGSIII or HTC One X, If anything it will match it

Droid 4 battery help by I_CRY_WHEN_I_POOPin Android

[–]icky_boo 1 point2 points ago

I was reading the post then something hit me, the Droid 4 is just a Razr with a keyboard, It doesn't have a user replaceable battery.. rofl.. then you updated the post.. O well, it ends well for your brother at least :)

For those who don't think a replaceable battery is a big deal by nicko68in Android

[–]icky_boo 0 points1 point ago

The key words you should have used is "user replaceable". Your average mum and pop won't be able to replace batteries on the Droid Razr/Razr maxx, HTC One X, Iphone as Khoavuong said. Also companies view opening a sealed phone/device to be a instant warranty void move, kind of ironic as the batteries tend to have a shorter warranty then the device itself sometimes, I recall it's like 90-180 days compared to the 1 year for the device when it comes to replaceable batteries. Might be a year too if it's sealed in. Either way it's a loose loose for consumer as it takes time to send back to factory/service centre to replace battery or be forced to do it yourself and loose warranty. Don't forget out of warranty battery replacements are a rip off, Apple charges $60 but they at least will do a straight swap for your device while Android OEMS will tell you to send/bring it and then they do it then charge you god knows what.

On a side note, here's a link to a funny story about non replaceable batteries.. screw up on tech support and has nothing to do with this thread but it's still funny.

If I am in Australia and want a Galaxy SIII asap, how do I get my hands on it? by RonaldoAcein Android

[–]icky_boo 0 points1 point ago

It was posted on /r/android a few days ago. But by the time it gets to AU then official release might already have been out , Said to be announced on the 29th of this month. Either way you could just wait and see if Kogan.com.au (Expected May 29th) or Mobicity.com.au has it.

I'm guessing it's going to be officially launched in AU in late June or first week of July like the SGS and SGSII was the years before.

Don't forget you need to go buy a Micro-Sim cutter thingy (Around $5 on ebay/amazon) to trim your simcard to fit into the new phone, you can also buy a micro sim adaptor (Might come with the sim cutter depending on the item you buy on ebay) to pad it to fit in normal sim slots again if you ever need to.

Btw the SGSIII international is quad band so it will work on Telstra and Vodafones 850mhz HSPA network just fine just like your SGSII. Now if you want a LTE version then you'll have to wait (months) for Telstra to release it as Telstra uses a different freq LTE compared to AT&T, I think it uses 700mhz/800mhz or something like that, I can't recall. If you do decide to wait for the LTE version then it will be using a Snapdragon SoC instead of Exynos and it will be priced damn expensive as Telstra are a rip off when it comes to buying phones outright from them . The SGSII 4G LTE is $768 or so as I recall, with no discounts or price drops as they are the only ones selling it while you can get a SGSII a week ago on Kogan for $439.

Swappa.com might have it cheaper. But that price on ebay sounds good.

Pikabob is also right, That's a CDMA phone.

Question about SGS2 random Reboots on ICS. by siamlloydin Android

[–]icky_boo 1 point2 points ago

That's not a random reboot problem, that's the sleep of death/deep sleep problem, I've had that once with the first official stock ics release. Fixed it by installing Siyah. I say go reset your Extweak profile anyways as that setting doesn't get wiped with kernel updates. Also update your modem as I think yours is quite old now (2-3months?) as it could also screw with waking up if modem is having problems. Change your governor to Ondemand too (download extweaks), the default new one for Siyah imho is buggy (No idea why Siyah dev keeps screwing with it)

Dell Streak 7 4G refurb $160 by themcpin Android

[–]icky_boo 2 points3 points ago

Not a bad device but it's a shame it's no longer supported by Dell and the reso is so bad for a 7inch device, Also the device is only AWS/T-Mobile supported so that's going to be a turn off to international and non T-Mobile buyers. I brought one off Ebay 6 months ago for $200 from dell's clearance account/store due to it being discontinued which was a damn bargain at the time.

It's a good buy now if you plan on using it on T-Mobile (Data only) but otherwise there's quite a few better 7" options now from China for $150 or wait for the Google Nexus $200 tablets

Question about SGS2 random Reboots on ICS. by siamlloydin Android

[–]icky_boo 1 point2 points ago

No idea what you are doing wrong but what do you mean random reboot? I'm on the same rom and kernel as you and everything runs perfectly fine. No random reboots in Res ICS 1.9.1 nor Stock rom (2nd rom), If you go around screwing with overclocking/undervolting or with the governors then you'd get reboots. Go reset the ExTweaks Profiles from the recovery menu

Analysis: Can $200 Quad-Core Tablets Rescue the Tegra 3? RootzWiki by fudnipin Android

[–]icky_boo 0 points1 point ago

Low cost tablets won't rescue them, a LTE modem to go with Tegra 3 which will be hopefully out in Q4 will. Samsung doesn't lock out SoC makers, in fact they use SoC's from all of the makers depending on region and price point of their device. They use Ti OMAP 4's in the i9100G and Galaxy Nexus , Tegra 2 on certain models of the SGSII and Qualcomm on LTE network devices.

Why hasn't anyone announced a standardized 'Atrix' dock, that would turn most high end phones into laptops? by treaznin Android

[–]icky_boo 5 points6 points ago

No standard for docks or placement of the usb/mhl location. Same reason why there's no standard for audio docks. Phillips is the only company that's trying it as far as I'm aware and even then it's not doing too well.

Remapped hard key on my Galaxy S2: absurdly easy, should work on other phones too. by JimmyHavokin Android

I don't think that app got updated because international sgs and sgsii don't even have a search key (long press menu). The long menu press don't even work in some roms like AOKP now.. sucky.

Is HTC investing in making our phones obsolete? by gthingin Android

[–]icky_boo 0 points1 point ago

It's called Planned obsolescence and it's been going on since the 50's, how else can they make things so affordable? Our society is built on it, nothing you can do other then learn to repair/fab your own stuff (might not be even worth it in long run)
