Superhero chin yessssss

I did the whole 'my best face' thing and it suggested my current picture, but the map reading one wasn't one of the options as I just uploaded it recently. Thanks for the advice!

haha you're totally right...that question makes my brain hurt

So, chemmit, I'm graduating in 8 days with a B.S. in Chemistry. Now what? by huntinjjin chemistry

I think you hit the nail on the head...and lucky for me, an alumni is an Associate Account Executive at Labsupport and he said he'd keep an eye out for anything that I might fit! Sweet!

I think you're right about that. I just got off the phone with a alumni who actually is a Associate Account Executive (whatever that means) with a recruiting agency and he said he'd definitely keep an eye out for anything he sees (and that he's going to keep an eye out for another alum :D ) so that should be promising. He also advised me to keep applying pretty much everywhere, so that's pretty much what i'm doing...

running around with my head cut off saying, "why, yes, I'd be happy to relocate if you're willing to give me a job, thank you for asking"

I would definitely be up for something less orthodox. I'm not so sure about the feasibility of starting a chemical company on my own though.

It's amazing how much "who you know, not what you know," plays such a role in our society sometimes. Too bad my dad's just a firefighter :/ but a pretty damn good one, at that.

That's interesting to know about the biotech hotbeds...I have relatives that live in the Raleigh-Durham area. It may be worth it to do some research in that direction.

My senior project advisor had just graduated with his PhD last year and he echoed your sentiments about how terrible the job market for PhD's are; a lot of his cohort are still trying to find jobs, and he only got the visiting professor spot at my school because of a timely sabbatical. After his contract is up, he doesn't really have any idea what he's going to do.

There is one recruiting agency in the NW, LabTemps, that places a bunch of people in temporary jobs apparently, so that at least might be helpful in getting any sort of experience, although something tells me that is unlikely to bear fruit.

Thanks for your response!

The lab is the reason I became a chemistry major. The grades didn't always follow along, and it didn't help that I was busy with other activities all the time, like rowing on the school team, and working a 20-hr a week job. Low and behold, after quitting both the team and my job to focus on school for my final semester, I'm getting A's and B's across the board. Oh the wonders of hindsight.

I live close to Seattle, which seems to be pretty good when it comes to availability of jobs. It's getting my foot in the door that's the hard part. I just don't know how to attract the attention of a company.

Can someone familiar with the Northwest (Washington) help me with a few questions? by bowler2013in CampingandHiking

I was just going to suggest keeping the layers and you beat me to it; I'm not as familiar with the Cascades and Pascayten Wilderness as I am with other areas of Washington. That being said, the temperature today in Pascayten was 75 degrees. According to the Northwest Regional Wilderness Directory, "Summer weather is often sunny and warm with frequent thunderstorms. Rain is more common in the western 1/3. Cold temperatures and even snow are possible anytime."

So kids, the lesson here is trust the NOLS, don't trust some loser on the internet haha!

Temps will be anywhere from mid to upper 70s to mid 90s. Today it was 85, tomorrow forecasted at 71. Nights will still be a little chilly, anywhere between 40s and 60s.

The biggest difference between here and Mississippi is how much less humid it will be. The heat here is very 'straight up': if the sun is shining on you, it's hot. If the wind is blowing, or you're in the shade, it's not hot. It doesn't feel like you're breathing in a hot cup of soup all the time; it's one of the things I like best about stepping out of the airport here compared to somewhere else like Florida or Philadelphia.

Make sure you bring lots of sunscreen if you can; even if it won't be as hot necessarily as it would be in Mississippi, you can and will get burned (although most of us are so happy to see the sun we don't care).

On that note, precipitation. One of the cliches of the Pacific Northwest is that it's rainy and miserable all year long. One of the best kept secrets of the Pacific Northwest is that the 60 days of sunshine in the summer are absolutely stunning. You may get a few showers here and there during the month you're here, but probably not something that will last more than a day or so. So, bring a jacket and tuck it in your backpack.

As for bugs, you'll primarily have to worry about mosquitos, but I would imagine they probably aren't half as bad as what you're used to; no mosquito nets necessary. I also have never heard of anyone having a tick problem (I think my dog had one once, maybe, but I was young and I don't remember very well), so Lyme disease shouldn't be a problem.

As for snow, you shouldn't have anything to worry about, depending on how high up you are in the Cascades; there may still be snow on the ground at really high elevations, but I can never remember snow falling during the summer even up on Mt. Rainier.

That's pretty much it. Let me know if you have any more questions

How many of you have turned to drinking to deal with being FA? by Rawrrrrrrrrrin ForeverAlone

[–]huntinjj 0 points1 point ago

I mean, it helps with the loneliness. I used to have someone and now I don't. and that hurt for a while. sometimes it still does. when I drink (either with friends or without) I tend to forget about her. and then things are better for a while. But it tends to be self destructive. Especially given how much I drink. and I don't think its going to help me find anyone. in fact, it tends to frighten people.

I picked up the guitar instead. It's better to sing about how dumb girls are then drink about it. Or at least I hope so.
