TROPHY CASE

I see your boss' mouse and raise you my brother's keyboard. (Cheetos and Mountain Dew, baby.) by innerspaceboyin WTF

[–]humaniteer 0 points1 point ago

I would buy this keyboard for $25 from your brother, so that I can use it as a decoy keyboard for my friends who come over and click on porn ads and fuck up my computer.

I have a milkshake story too. I was passing through a place in my town known as the Bermuda Triangle of bars, where drunks wander around at all hours. It is near campus, so at around 1 AM on a wintery night, I can see a really drunk college kid, who had obviously lost his jacket, probably because he was kicked out of a bar, and raging drunk in the street, punch a passing car's door. So I slowly drive up to him, and he is ready to kick or punch my driver's side door, when I throw the frostee I got at Wendy's into his face, and all over his remaining clothes. It was worth every penny considering I would have a dented car door otherwise.

Bozeman here, I concur! Also, in the Jedediah Wilderness on the WY/ID border, just short of 11,000 feet up on Fossil Mtn there are sea shells.

Going to purchase a 1972 Bayliner Nisqually 22' and had some questions for you guys... by humaniteerin boating

[–]humaniteer[S] 0 points1 point ago

Ehh that sounds like nothing compared to some of the things I've been through with recreational vehicles! The engine hasn't even been used yet, the fiberglass has no cracks, transom is part of the hull, and there is no rot, so I'm ready to tackle the rest.

I will only be using this as a basecamp for backpacking trips on the north shore of Lake Powell, and hitting up Flathead Lake, and Lake Yellowstone, so I'll be having a killer time regardless of what is going on with the boat just short of sinking.

This is honestly by far the best boat with a 5 hours drive for sale. We were looking for a cuddy cab (to cook and sleep in), 22 foot or under (for free storage). We looked at so many boats... It's a shame to see some of these old classics rotting away and not having been in the water for a decade or more. I don't know much about boats because this is my first one, but this thing looks spectacular.

Hey /DIY I need some advise on my kitchen floor. by 13cylindersin DIY

I second the levelling compound. I once used it to fill in a difference of 2" rise in 5 foot span. Worked great, I then put ceramic tile on it, and the toilet (which originally caused the floor to warp).

Need help with rub/scratch marks on brand new stainless steel fridge! by metrognome64in DIY

[–]humaniteer 0 points1 point ago

I am a guy who used to fix these types of things for appliance salesman, and I concur.

Sometimes you can rub those out with some of the oil supplied with stainless fridges, but you have to do the entire face of the fridge, with the grain or else it will look splotchy.

If that doesn't work, you can buy a kit at most appliance stores, which does not work half the time. They are a huge pain in the ass, and require a lot of work, and sore shoulders. But if the scratch isn't too deep, they almost always are sufficient.

If the scratch is very deep, I usually order a new panel, replace it, and move on with my life.

Bookcase screw up. Need advice. by amoskoin DIY

[–]humaniteer 0 points1 point ago

If you're going to pry between thin wood like that, you can't use a claw hammer. You'll need a cat's paw, and some shim material, which can distribute the pressure across the piece. That stuff is cheap and delicate.

Repair Wall with tons of holes? by Ickybod_Clayin DIY

[–]humaniteer 0 points1 point ago

I rent property, and at times, I have holes of all sizes. I will list my fixes in size order:

-for pin and nail holes I just fill with joint compound, and sand. Paint. Some thick latex paints will just fill those holes in on their own.

-for holes smaller than 1", the video linked to in this thread is more than sufficient and cheap.

-for holes 1"-12" I crumble some newspapers, until I have the inside of the wall "blocked up". I then fill the whole space with some Great Stuff or other type of expanding foam. If your hole is enormous, it is worth it to secure a piece of board or sheetrock piece to a wall with a weight or something (even tack it in with a screw or two, put a hole in your scrap board, and fill it in from there. The foam will expand past the newspaper and push itself out that way. Put a piece of paper between the scrap board and the whole if you're using great stuff because it will stick to the board or sheetrock. Wait until it's dry, and then attack the thing with a razor knife, bring the foam to about 1/4" behind the plane of the wall. It does not need to look pretty, but you need to make sure that none of the foam will be sticking out further than the wall. I then put some joint compound over the whole ugly mess. When dry, I sand, then prime, then paint.

-for whole bigger than 12" I tear out the sheetrock to the width of the stud bay, and just put up new sheetrock. Make sure to have nice clean edges on the top and bottoms. I mean the more perfect you can cut the edges, the easier and better this will be for you. Sink your drywall screw a little deeper than you normally would. Tape with paper, not mesh, and put some mud on it. Sand, prime, paint.

Messing with sheetrock is an art and science! It's not hard, but sometimes you need to think outside of the box with huge fixes.

Replacing the bathroom facet & piping? by Eowyn27in DIY

[–]humaniteer 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't use pliers on a fitting, especially if it's not your property. That's a good way to really damage a nut. Use two crescent wrenches, one on the nut being removed, and another in a stationary position (with the end up against a cabinet wall or something) and it should pop off without a problem.

Also: turn the water off before you do this, get a towel underneath the nut, and remember leftie loosie, rightie tightie.

Replacing the bathroom facet & piping? by Eowyn27in DIY

[–]humaniteer 0 points1 point ago

Make sure to put it in writing that you notified them of the leak, so they won't come back and charge you for damages. There's usually a clause in the lease which states that you are responsible for telling a landlord of problems with a unit.

Hardibacker install question for flooring. by drankensteinin DIY

[–]humaniteer 0 points1 point ago

I would tape as you go, mostly because if you're not doing a super neat job, and have some raised areas, you will have to sand those down and bring them back to plane, or float a tile on the bump with some extra thinset. Yes I have made the mistake before, and yes it is a bitch to redo it.

Going to purchase a 1972 Bayliner Nisqually 22' and had some questions for you guys... by humaniteerin boating

[–]humaniteer[S] 0 points1 point ago

I don't get it, from all the reviews I am reading online, it seems like Bayliner is a solid brand which has been around for a long time. I only hear vague descriptions of an OMC drive being crappy, but no direct answers as to why Bayliner is a trouble to own.

Will I be paying a lot for maintenance, parts, fuel, or what? Do they break down easily? I was assured there was no rot and the engine was new.

Yea it is all logistics really. He wouldn't mind taking me out on it. He did mention that the boat had a Merc 2 or something. He mentioned that this was a good model as well. I will definitely post back with the year of the OMC manual, but I would guess it's a 1972.
