When movies and television shows have a scene that involves a crying baby, how do they make the baby cry? by Iamthegoodguyin AskReddit

[–]hooraybeard 167 points168 points ago

I worked on the cinematic masterpiece "life as we know it" back in late 2009, and was on set every single day. We had triplets that played the main baby, and would rotate them accordingly depending on their sleeping and eating schedules. They had their mother with them at all times, a nanny, and 2 production assistants dedicated to wrangling them. One of our main actors spent a lot of time during the day between setups hanging out and getting comfortable with them, so they wouldn't cry when he handled them on camera.

One of the babies was one of those really happy babies that never cried, so during all the scenes where the baby is happy, she was the obvious choice. Another one of the babies was always really fussy so if there was a shot where the baby was crying, we would use her. Anytime the baby was crying though we would always try to get the shot as quick as possible- by not bringing the baby onto the set until all the lighting and cameras and everything was 100% ready to go. We would often rehearse several times to iron out any kinks before a baby was brought on set.

If there was a certain performance we wanted out of the babies, we would often leave the camera rolling for a long time and there would be a sea of adults behind the camera trying to coax the baby into laughing, standing up, walking, etc. it was actually quite funny to watch.

We also had "photo doubles" every day that we would use for any shots that didn't show our main babies face. There were 2 of them and they came to work every single day. If the shot was from far away, or if an actor was holding the kid in a way where we wouldn't see it's face in the shot, we would use one of these babies instead. So basically, for every shot in that movie with a baby in it, the AD's and director basically had at least 5 or 6 babies to choose from at any given time.

Also, we used a lot of babies as background extras in this movie, and anytime one of them started crying, we would ask their mother to take them off the set, because when one baby cried, the other babies would hear it and before you knew it, there could be 20 crying babies on set.

So, yeah. That's how it's done.

Anyone got a puppy? by Tai2172in Atlanta

I'd recommend going to the Atlanta humane society. There is one in town at Howell mill and 10th street I believe. I've been before to look at dogs when I was thinking about getting one. It's really a great place. Plenty of dogs of all breeds and ages. Easy to just walk in and take a stroll around.

I'm sorry, but I have to grammar police this title. Christ man, did you read this first? I can't believe this made front page. ಠ_ಠ

Me visiting ATL with three girlfriends... Suggestions? by sundaesundayin Atlanta

I live downtown. You should look at Terrace. Great veggie options.

Edit: also, there is a winter beer carnival on Sunday at Atlantic station. Not walking distance from downtown, but easily accessible. www.winterbeercarnival.com

Not the same thing in my book either. She thinks im some big liar now who has a closet full of skeletons. Nothing i can say can convince her otherwise. She's not even up for discussion. Fuck. I don't know what to do here. I texted her and asked if I could come home. No response. So tonight im on my friends couch out in the suburbs.

I don't feel like I've done anything to get a reaction this severe.

Yes, I should have told her. I know this. But I was afraid of her acting like this. Even if it was just one smoke.

I want to quit. It's a terrible habit. I do not want to be a smoker again. I've made huge strides in my health since we have been together and this is a step backwards and I know that. And I feel terrible about it. It's a terrible thing. And a couple cigarettes just spun out of control and now here I am, 3 months later.

I always thought I would just knock it off before I got caught. It was never meant to be a permanent thing. I didn't make a conscious decision to become a smoker again. Addiction is a powerful thing.

And.. you're right. I did quit. For a very long time. I had a momentary lapse of reason and fell back into my old ways for a couple months, but to her its the same as if I had never quit in the first place.

I wish she could approach this situation like you just did. I would love to hear her say "honey, I'm not okay with this. I wish you would have been honest with me, but I understand that addiction is difficult. Let's work on fixing this."

I don't feel like that's going to happen though.

Maybe she is realizing that I'm not sure perfect person, and until now she thought I was. Now she thinks im weak, and a liar. She asked me about cigarettes when she smelled my breath and I cannot, will not, look her in the eyes and lie to her. So I came clean and she lost it. She wouldn't even discuss it. I tried to get her to be rational, I tried to calm her, but the more I tried the more emotional she got. I threw some clothes in a backpack and said "are you sure about this? Are you sure you want me to leave?" And she said "yes. You're a liar. Get out."

So I left. Came to my friends couch. Not sure if staying here tonight will make it worse or if I should go home and sleep on the couch. Maybe me being there when she wakes up will make things better. I really don't know what to do.

But that's it. I haven't done anything to hurt her other than keep this from her. Never cheated, never stole, never anything. I've been great. Everything is great. But the fact that i've been hiding this has literally pushed her over the edge. She won't even discuss it. All I can get out of her is "fuck you"

I've never given her any ultimatums. I took her at face value and love her for who she is. Any weakness on her part would make me love her more. I'm completely supportive of everything she does. And everything she wants to do. And I've always been that way.

She is mostly the same for me, but smoking is just one of those things that she apparently won't tolerate. And its not even up for discussion. I'm clueless.

She finally texted me back. A whole lot of "fuck you's" and "you're a liar."

Alsi, she said "you're probably with your other gf right now."

Now she thinks im hiding all sorts of things. Shit.

I didn't tell her. I smoked a cigarette early today, came home hours later, ate dinner, and we were watching a movie on the couch. She gave me a kiss and said that my breath smelled like cigarettes. I didnt, couldnt, and have never lied to her, so I told her I had one. Then she exploded.

I work in the film business. I'm an assistant director on features. So I work on about 3 or for major movies and year, and take several weeks off between each. When I'm working, I consistently pull 14 to 18 hour days and am largely unavailable.

A few months ago, I was working on an incredibly difficult job. My role on a film set requires me to be completely involved in every aspect of shooting. I get insanely busy and just don't have time to talk. We started arguing about how much I was working, and it just spiraled from there. So I had a smoke. So that's the backstory.

I tried to reason with her, but addiction is just something she doesn't understand. I don't know how to make it make sense to her. One cigarette led to 3, and that led to a couple each week, and that led to more. She doesn't really have any experience with addiction, and I don't know how to convince her that I'm not a terrible human.

I tried. I tried to keep her calm and have a discussion. She flipped completely and didn't want to discuss it at all. She thinks of I can lie about this then i can lie about anything.

I have decided to eat healthier. I'm struggling to keep it 'interesting'. My question is, Reddit, what is your favourite healthy snack/ meal that you keep going back for? by dnastrandin AskReddit

[–]hooraybeard 1 point2 points ago

Absolutely. I go crazy with it. The other day I did a bunch of apples, soy milk, dash of cinnamon, honey, handful of ice and a graham cracker. Frozen apple pie in a glass. So good. And fun.

Smoothies. So easy, so healthy. Couple handfuls of spinach, a banana, some blueberries, splash of OJ and some ice. Bam. Delicious. Whatever fruit or juice you have around can all be blended together for a quick delicious snack.

Also, I'm addicted to hummus. All kinds. Hummus with pita chips almost everyday.

Reddit, I have this wierd feeling heartbeat, any ideas? by xPyein AskReddit

[–]hooraybeard 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like SVT. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supraventricular_tachycardia I was diagnosed with this about 2 years ago. You need to make an appointment with a cardiologist and have this checked out. There are several different kinds, some of which are no problem (like mine) but some can be serious. I was in the same boat as you and then one day after work I had an episode that lasted for several minutes. It was incredibly scary, and I thought I was dying. Rushed to the hospital and found out that mine isn't severe, but can be caused by stress. So now I make an effort to stay positive and not get too worked up about anything.

Basically, I have an additional electrical pathway somewhere in my heart. So occasionally, especially if I'm stressed out or exhausted, my brain tells my heart to "pump" and this additional pathway grabs the signal. This sends my heart into a tailspin and my heart rate can instantaneously speed up to hundreds of beats per minute, skip beats, etc... I get extremely light headed, dizzy, my hands lgo numb, and it feels like a frog in my chest. It can be pretty frightening! I can normally set it right with controlled breathing, flexing my abdominal muscles, or splashing cold water on my face. Since my diagnosis I've only had about 2 or 3 of these episodes.

There are more severe types of this though. Some require medication, some require a procedure. Most of them are non life threatening, but some conditions, like Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, can be very serious indeed.

You need to go have this checked out. Anything heart related can potentially be very serious. Don't mess around with this. Don't try to self diagnose. Just go to a specialist and figure out whats up. Sudden cardiac death could really ruin your day, man. Good luck!
