I know it isn't the best article in the world. They are trivializing some little girl's pain and making it into a tearjerker, but any change that can come to a country and eschew that kind of behavior is ok in my book. I don't think we need to occupy the country and whatnot, which we did, but to say that Afghanistan was A-OK before we came along just seems wrong. That place is a backwards and savage land. I'm sure the people have many fine qualities, but they really need some egalitarianism by whatever means possible.
