I could use some help with a naming ceremony for twins. by annalatrinain atheistparents

[–]heidihannah 1 point2 points ago

I don't have any good quotes or poems for you. I suggest you write it yourself. It does not need to be prophetic, just joyous in the addition of this new life to your family and the universe. A new being made of stardust.

And congratulations :-)

Take a look at what my daughter said about her Ken doll. Reddit, what great quotes do you have from your kids? by hunterlakerin AskReddit

Family trip to mountains. With my then 4 yo son and father.

My son was up early when his grandpa comes out of the bedroom with no shirt on. My son looks up at him and says, "Nobody wants to see that!"

Poor grandpa shuffled away returning fully dressed. Ouch!

Can we all just brag for a moment? by rastabeanin AskReddit

My son is super smart -

He is in first grade. He reads at an eighth grade level (favorite book is Ender's Game). He was tested because of how advanced he is and is in the 99th percentile in math.

I am a super proud Momma, but I definitely feel like it is taboo to bring up. Especially to my siblings with kids - it is the last thing they want to hear about.

At what age would you let your child go to church with friends or family? by bjittyin atheistparents

[–]heidihannah 1 point2 points ago

The only time I would stop it is if someone was trying to coerce my son. Everyone knows I'm athiest and my family has great respect for that. My ex's family is aware and it hasn't come up with them really. They respect me and find me a great mother (I have sole custody, not by court but b/c the father doesn't really seem interested in parenting rather than "hanging out" every once and awhile.

My sister goes to a Unitarian church, which I've taken him to. Full of atheists trying to give their children a sense of community.

I tell me son my view. I explain my science and why I think this. I tell him that my desire is for him to explore it for himself and make his own decision. - that being said, he currently believes in Egyptian and Greek gods :-) (he is 7)

my first thought was of wasted food, so i'm delighted to see this. Get them in to as many charity food places as you can find pronto. I'd look into single mother charities (we have WIC in NC ~ not a charity but they might point you in the right direction). Soup kitchens. Outside grocery stores in poor neighborhoods. Have fun feeling like Santa for starving families!

But fast... or it is disturbingly wasteful.

Definitely too sweet with that typical grocery store birthday cake - it is for this reason that I learned to bake! Now all my people get personalized birthday cakes according to their taste

Does no one else notice the other side of the table? It looks like someone is about to climb under (on hands and knees) ~ perhaps help a brother out?

"Inconceivable!" by boop-boop-a-doopin WTF

[–]heidihannah 1 point2 points ago

True Story: my first grade son was in class and the teacher asked for words to put on the word board. My son shoots out "inconceivable!" The teacher wouldn't put it up because ... Wait for it .... She couldn't spell it!

Only in Canada would you see a random civilian take charge and direct traffic during rush hour in a busy intersection after the lights stop working. by Digital_Monsterin videos

I'm in the southern US and see it frequently. Especially after tornados or hurricanes. The community really pulls together then and everyone is out helping.

I should also add that this is in the capital city, not rural country.

question: can you name any culture that doesn't have religion? by heidihannahin atheism

[–]heidihannah[S] 0 points1 point ago

thanks, i'm looking them up. it appears that they do believe in "spirits" but that would lead into the question of how does one define religion or faith.

[–]heidihannah[S] 0 points1 point ago

i agree, but i must say that i see a difference between faith and organized religion. the problem arises when people use religion to gain power and control, but it isn't the faith itself that is the problem. just helps some people sleep better at night and explain that which they have less knowledge of.

thank you. That was very well put.

[–]heidihannah[S] 0 points1 point ago

certainly not that they are correct, but it does put a question mark in my head.

And yes, i'm thinking more historically rather than modern day. Some small tribal population who just farmed, hunted and didn't bow down to some entity.

it seems like a slight one to me. an argument for some omnipotent force OR ancient aliens..... perhaps i'm have a crisis of atheism???? is that possible?

question: can you name any culture that doesn't have religion? by heidihannahin atheism

[–]heidihannah[S] 0 points1 point ago

aww... don't do that. I certainly don't appreciate it when I'm attacked for being atheist. Religion is not dumb, nor without a purpose. Many people have not been presented with other options OR feel that with every answer science gives us, there is still another question... my answer is 42, others go for faith. I'm also talking more historically here, when science had not presented the answers we have today.

I can not prove love exists, it is something I feel and I know to be true. (still an atheist here - I just don't like calling people dumb for coming to a different conclusion with the tough questions)

What is the craziest shit you have heard someone say in their sleep? by Jsociain AskReddit

[–]heidihannah 0 points1 point ago

My ex was a big sleep talker/walker. The best, I think, was when he sat bolt upright saying, "There is 30,000 dollars under the mattress!!!" I told him to go back to sleep and he kept repeating it with such conviction that I'm still shocked I didn't push him onto the floor to double check

need some advice by Zlevinin atheistparents

[–]heidihannah 2 points3 points ago

I'd let this one go. The sitter is being respectful of your atheism. As for the kid - this will happen throughout his life with religion and other things. If anything, I would briefly take to your son about other kids being pushy, but playground rules are frequently best experienced.

On a side note: as an atheist parent I still do a "blessing" at the table. I thank farmers, read a short thoughtful poem, I love my son reading short excerpts from "where the sidewalk ends" - It isn't an every night thing.
