TeamViewer on Unity by pujumain Ubuntu

[–]hawkies 0 points1 point ago

It's been generally OK for me. One thing I did find is that TeamViewer doesn't handle workspaces very well (by which I mean it hangs, forcing me to disconnect and reconnect).

Re-installing Android on my phone (have never done this) - what do I need to be aware/careful of? by daveyb86in techsupport

I suggest XDA developers. Find your phone model and read through the rooting and flashing guides.

Android Fragmentation Visualized - The many faces of a little green robot by chrisarchitectin Android

[–]hawkies 5 points6 points ago

I think there's a misunderstanding what fragmentation really is here. As I understand it, fragmentation refers to the different version of Android on the many devices.

Android is designed to be put on various devices from many different manufacturers, with different hardware, screen resolutions, sizes, etc. This is not fragmentation, it's choice.

Sysadmin/IT support apps you can't live without. by Iriestxin Android

This has got to be the most comprehensive and entertaining list I've read. The only way it could be better is if you linked to everything as well. Thank you for taking the time to write this and helping out a lot of people.

Google Play has a new "Shop Devices" section. by meinhyperspeedin Android

Not fully pure, but ASUS' customisations are light (if I look at the Transformer etc.). Also, ASUS has an excellent track record so far with pushing updates.

Google Drive now live!! by s1ncerein Android

Except...No Linux support. I use Dropbox, well, everywhere. GDrive is not everywhere just yet. Still, good competition and hopefully it gets a Linux client soon.

Here's what's getting me: I know I love the GNexus - I've reviewed the thing and it's the Android phone that I recommend to people - but I have this sinking feeling that the ASUS PadFone could be really awesome, and then I'm gonna want that. sigh

What twitter app do you use and why? by TylerDurdenJuniorin Android

[–]hawkies 0 points1 point ago

Plume. Great feature set, great UI, great widget, works wonderfully on phone and tablet, and constant support from the developer.

I've been using Plume since I started using Android and it was one of the first apps I bought. I've stuck with it, and I do stray and test out other clients every now and then, but I always find my way back to Plume.

Why should Developers support Android anymore? by [deleted]in Android

[–]hawkies 28 points29 points ago

I think there is a lack of information here. After your app was featured on Kotaku, did you do any further marketing? Offer a review copy to a few sites like Android Police. If it gets a favourable review, I guarantee you'll get more sales. I can honestly say that's how I operate: I read reviews for games on sites that I trust and if I like what I read (and maybe see thanks to a video), I'll happily buy it. I know most of my friends operate on a very similar basis.

To the problem with making an app work across devices/Android versions: I'm not a game dev, but I've had only one problem with one of my apps not working on one device (Droid Incredible IIRC), and I found a way around the problem. Are you using something like Unity to build your games?

Android is suffering from a quality issue? Please explain this further. ICS works like a dream on my Nexus S and ASUS Transformer, and more apps designed for ICS are popping up daily and they're beautiful.

I'll pay quite a bit for a game - if I think it's worth it. If I don't think it's worth it, I just won't play it. In my experience, people generally pirate a game because they want it, but can't get it (due perhaps to cost, but more often it's because they simply can't find it due to something like region or licensing restrictions). Yes, there are pirates that pirate for the sake of piracy (I have a friend like that), but they form a minority, and no matter what you do, they'll pirate.

Reddit, what is your favourite quote from a book? by [deleted]in AskReddit

[–]hawkies 0 points1 point ago

This is one of my favourites from a book:

"There seems to be a penchant among humans to believe that things >as they are will remain as they are forever. Even though there is overwhelming evidence that this is seldom the case, we still insist on it." - John Day, Patterns in Network Architecture: A return to Fundamentals.

This one is not from a book, it's from a PC game, but it's one that's stuck with me:

"If there is anything I have learned in my travels across the Planes, it is that many things may change the nature of a man. Whether regret, or love, or revenge or fear - whatever you believe can change the nature of a man, can. I’ve seen belief move cities, make men stave off death, and turn an evil hag's heart half-circle. This entire Fortress has been constructed from belief. Belief damned a woman, whose heart clung to the hope that another loved her when he did not. Once, it made a man seek immortality and achieve it. And it has made a posturing spirit think it is something more than a part of me." - Nameless One, Planescape Torment

Any news on official ICS for the Nexus S? by ubershmekelin Android

Maybe a little diminished, but nothing serious. I get a full day at work without any issues. Right now it's on 70% after a day.

I've been running it for a while now. Just DL the zip and flash it yourself, no root required.
