How One Flawed Study Spawned a Decade of Lies by ChadR44in science

I'm pretty sure having control groups and not conducting phone interviews were available to him in 2001. The methodology was utter garbage.

Cognitive Fun is an excellent collection of brain training games based on cognitive science studies. It has a great community, too.

Ideas for a play? by yoohoopantsin theater

[–]grillcover 0 points1 point ago

The Actor's Nightmare is always fun. I saw it done as a directing project in college, and the director did it pretty sound/lights heavy. If you really tap into the dream-like quality of it, and its inspiration from the traditional actor's nightmare, then there's no limit to the tech you could play with.

2012 r/LOST Tournament of Episodes - Final Four voting open by magister0in lost

[–]grillcover 1 point2 points ago

Haha seriously man, I hadn't been keeping track of this bracket, so when I saw the headline I figured, "How hard could this be?" As soon as I saw the four titles on display, I think my heart started racing a little. This was probably the hardest choice I've made all week.

Theatres, Take Your Tweet Seats And Shove 'Em by idledebonairin Theatre

[–]grillcover 5 points6 points ago

Thank you. I loathe the idea of Tweet Seats. I think he hit the nail on the head with how the mistaken line of thinking goes:

If we give them a playpen and condescend to their fetish for technology (you know, give baby a rattle), they'll come rushing, clutching fistfuls of cash, to see the latest so-so production of Our Town.

This is what insults me about Tweet Seats. It's not that I don't like Twitter. It's not that I don't see the pressing, urgent, be-all-end-all importance of developing younger audiences. It's that the idea itself is actually stupid, useless, and contrary to what the theater-going experience is.

I seriously credit this author for pointing out that even if you ascribe to a Brechtian mode of verfremdung, and actively seek to prevent an audience's emotional immersion, encouraging distraction is a thoroughly boneheaded idea.

Phil from Dharma, you mean. He wasn't an Other. But yeah -- When I saw Mad Men after Lost that blew my mind a little.

Any In The Heights fans out there? by okiernanin Broadway

[–]grillcover 2 points3 points ago

Hell yeah! 'In The Heights' is, in my opinion, one of the most important musicals in recent memory. A few good friends who I work with regularly were on the national tour a couple years ago. It seemed like a pretty special experience to be a part of that show! I saw it back when it premiered in NYC and was just blown away.

The God Mode Stack by Drogeanin Nootropics

[–]grillcover 5 points6 points ago

I wouldn't really say that's completely different -- or at least, no more than any of the other listed things such as meditation or sleep. If the intention is to create the optimal circumstances for the brain and cognition to operate, having a clear emotional state is as important as any computing power. To that end, as a means of pharmacological therapy, shrooms can have lasting effects on mental clarity, self-esteem, and emotional well-being, all of which can affect discrete task completion.

But I understand your meaning, that you're more interested in direct improvements on specific tasks as a result of the drug. It's also far more difficult to research extensively (though thankfully there have been recent breakthroughs and reignited interest) so if you're basing your lifestyle on scientifically proven methods, then yeah, I suppose psychedelics are less appropriate.

The God Mode Stack by Drogeanin Nootropics

[–]grillcover 16 points17 points ago

What's that supposed to mean? If you're into nootropics, then shrooms shouldn't be too far off. The emotional insight and mental clarity they've facilitated in my experience is not something to dismiss, and my experience is not unusual. In a good setting -- with people you trust, on a nice day, maybe in a park or forest -- it can honestly be considered an important part of a lifestyle devoted to self-betterment.

My least favorite part of the WHOLE series. by wish_I_was_a_t_rexin lost

I think some of the emotional tension in those moments hinged on the fact that he barely knew Walt. He was convincing himself of what he said as much as, or more than, communicating his relationship to the others.

NYC is investigating Megabuses for being dangerously overweight and other cities have already said no to their double-deckers. by Matuasin nyc

[–]grillcover 2 points3 points ago

Me too. And I went to school up in Boston, so I was a Chinatown bus frequenter.

One time my Chinatown bus broke down, and we had to get picked up by and stand on the next one passing through. So I decided to take Greyhound the next trip.

The Greyhound driver ran a red in Hartford and barreled through an intersection with cars swerving and honking on both sides. It was late at night, so I assumed he may have fallen asleep or something. Never again.

Jacob's Rules [Spoilers] by azura26in lost

[–]grillcover 1 point2 points ago

He wasn't calling you homophobic. He was calling the image homophobic, and agreeing that the punchline (Jacob had a bunch of stupid rules) was ruined by the insensitive use of "faggot".

See my other comment for clarification on why this isn't necessarily the case.

Jacob's Rules [Spoilers] by azura26in lost

[–]grillcover 5 points6 points ago

Because it's a childish insult. It's a childish insult because anyone who says it is likely fairly unenlightened as to modern notions of compassion and decency.

The joke is that Jacob's rules are childish, and that he just kept making up random rules. It effectively amounts to a "Neener neener" that an idiot kid would say after changing all the rules to a game so that he wins.

Hope that helps.

President Barack Obama for fiscal year 2013 would slash $226 million from the US space agency's Mars exploration program by Sevilstin science

[–]grillcover 1 point2 points ago

What's the last paragraph mean, then?

Meanwhile, [the budget proposal] funds other big projects such as the James Webb Space Telescope and a new heavy-lift rocket to propel an eventual deep space mission to an asteroid, and provides seed money for private companies seeking to replace the space shuttle which was retired last year.

If the overall NASA budget only goes down by $59 million... And $226 million is coming out of the Mars program... Doesn't it stand to reason (and math) that about $167 million is being redirected to those other, (apparently) higher priority projects?

My mime company in NYC is producing our first independent production in March -- check out our Kickstarter, and pledge if you think it seems cool! by grillcoverin Theatre

We debuted at Walker Space at Soho Rep last summer, playing a dark night during the run of a play our producer was mounting there, and then had an extremely well-received run at Bleecker Street Theater during the FringeNYC Festival in August.

This is our chance to have our own show, and we're going all out! Mime is so underappreciated, but so wonderful -- I'd love to keep sharing it with Theatredditors.

This is true among Conservative and Orthodox Jews. This is not really true among Reform and culturally Jewish people.

I think a lot of people would take umbrage if you told them the way they identified "didn't count" because of archaic matrilineal assurances.

Good luck!
