Did I completely ruin this? by throwaway1234zzzin relationships

I'm two weeks into a very similar situation right now. May I ask how things went for you?

That may actually be the only claim on that list that is supported by solid science. It is well-known in the medical community that chewing ice is indicative of iron deficiency. See pagophagia on Wikipedia.

Psychologists now believe fledgling psychopaths can be identified as early as kindergarten by Ze_Cariocain science

[–]goshawktopus 2 points3 points ago

It's ridiculous that they're studying the children like this. From the Wikipedia page on psychopathy:

There is currently no reliable means by which to reform a psychopath. In the past, special therapies for psychopathic inmates were designed to teach them sensitivity, but these backfired and instead made them even more likely to reoffend.[85] It is believed that the programs instead made them more adept manipulators and thus opened up more opportunities for them to exploit people.

I've read a decent amount of Robert Hare's literature on psychopathy (not professionally, just for morbid curiosity's sake) and the data on group therapy for psychopaths has been clear for quite some time. All published data says with great certainty that psychopaths cannot be treated, reformed, or reasoned with. While it's a painful idea that these children cannot be saved, I personally think that our resources should go toward identifying them as soon as possible and keeping a close eye on their activities.

To the male Garrus fans, why do you like him, and what is it that makes him so appealing to you? by Medanein masseffect

[–]goshawktopus 0 points1 point ago

That's interesting. I saw it another way; I think what Saleon and Sidonis did was unforgivable - Garrus had very personal reasons for wanting to be the one to take them out and I would never consider robbing him of his right to vengeance. I played a Paragon-leaning middle-of-the-road Shep, but didn't think twice about letting him ice those guys.

Think of it like this: what if Garrus had stepped in and stopped you from stabbing Lt. Bastard Kai Leng because he had arbitrarily decided that it would be wrong to kill him because it stemmed from a desire for vengeance? Some people deserve to die.

Lots of people never wanted the Reapers explained. They were supposed to be beyond our biological ability to comprehend them; that was scary. I would have preferred to keep them that way.

I did misunderstand you. :) You make some good points. I think it's odd that they gave her a dress as an off-duty option at all. Trotting around the Normandy in heels and a faux-leather dress is just... odd.

So her gender doesn't get in the way.

And it shouldn't. The fact that Bioware allowed Femshep to be a strong person instead of trying to turn her into a writer's idea of a strong woman is why so many women, including myself, are adamant fans of ME. I don't expect my Shepard to give two shits about looking dainty in a dress. She's got better things to do. What you attribute to a flippant lack of attention, I see a defiant fuck-you to the usual female stereotypes. If it wasn't originally intended that way, that's still how it's been received. If more games had characters like Femshep, I'd play more of them.

I was really irked by the change in the way Femshep runs without her gun drawn in ME3. She went from straight-to-business to awkward and weak-looking. She held her elbows back like she was desperately trying to make her shoulder width look more dainty. :(

If the Reapers are trying to prevent organics from developing AI that will eventually wipe them out, then why do they litter the galaxy with Mass Relays and tempt races who don't understand them into the Citadel? The Reapers give much less technologically-advanced races the ability to progress thousands of years beyond their capabilities. It makes no sense. Their actions are in line with an intent to farm beings like we farm cattle, not a role as (cold, dispassionate) protectors.

Is it possible that some human emotions and actions are influenced by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections? by YouArentReasonablein askscience

[–]goshawktopus 3 points4 points ago

Here is a link to a Scientific American podcast (also contains a link to the study) about changes in behavior as a result to modification of the species composition of gut flora in mice. There is also a well-documented (if poorly-understood) connection between IBS/GI problems and anxiety/depression. The link is definitely there, but we're only just beginning to scratch the surface of the specific ways in which gut bacteria affect us. As other posters have mentioned, toxoplasmosis (infection by toxoplasma gondii) can profoundly change behavior in rats and has different, but still distinct, effects on humans as well. I think we can safely postulate that there must be a variety of viruses/bacteria/fungi/parasites that are capable of changing our chemistry and therefore influencing our behavior.

Trying to explain the Reapers was a terrible mistake on the writers' part. A large aspect of what made the the Reapers so terrifying was that Reapers:Humans (and Asari/etc.) as Humans:cattle - completely incapable of comprehending their motives due to biological shortcomings, unwittingly being farmed for reasons we don't understand. It made defeating them feel impossible, and made us feel small, helpless, even ashamed in a a way - that we weren't the self-determined innovators that we thought we were. We were farm stock, nothing more. I loved the idea that they saw us - without exaggerating their superiority - as ants and that despite the odds we held on to this desperate chance that we might be able to band together and defeat them anyway. When that was taken away, the weight of the whole story collapsed in on itself.

I love semicolons. Why can't somebody use a semicolon without assuming pretention? It's not like they're exotic or difficult to use.

[–]goshawktopus 8 points9 points ago

He died in my game because ever since he moved from the front-and-center console in the shuttle bay, I couldn't find him! I searched around but could only find Vega and a couple other people standing around chatting amongst themselves. Thus I figured Cortez's thing was just a temporary side story instead of a consistent crew member... a friend only recently told me he's down there somewhere tinkering with the shuttle. Now I feel like a monster.
