Not to mention it's 17th century. I don't think we can really criticize modern church for things they did in the 17th century...

HELP A SAP! So I'm in a bus right now and this very hot brunette just sat down beside me. It will be a five-hour ride. And holy lord flying spaghetti she's wearing a Reddit shirt! What do I say or ask to her? by well_it_looks_likein AskReddit

[–]gorillapoop 1 point2 points ago

If you talk to her with premeditated reddit advice, it won't sound like you're talking to a real person. This is what you're going to do. Picture your best (platonic) female friend, one you're very comfortable with, and start chatting like she's a real person.

Go go go bot!

Oh, of course. But I don't think there's anything wrong with starting meditation because a person enjoys the short term sensations. I think these sensations can be sort of a nice "preview" of some of the long term effects that are waiting down the road :)

It can be the purpose of meditation. Concentrating in a flow state exercises clarity, equanimity, and concentration, the three-fold attentional skill-set that define mindfulness.

Some Buddhists have attained greater mindfulness from solely practicing Jhana absorption states.

To explain the concept, I'll have to pick a form of meditation. Every form of meditation deals with the same concepts and outcomes, but uses different methods (Zen, Shingon, Tantric meditation, etc). Although I've been recently practicing a lot more Zen meditation, I will explain the concept through Vipassana meditation, as that is my specialty.

The idea behind Vipassana is that you untangle your thoughts and separate them into discrete sensory experiences. It's similar to sounds — all sounds can be divided into thousands of compounded sine waves. Thoughts can be divided into compounded sensory experiences.

We have 6 different sense planes (below are really oversimplified definitions):

Outer Visual — Anything you can see

Outer Auditory — Anything you can hear

Outer Somatic — Anything you physically feel in your body

Inner Visual — Anything you can picture in your mind

Inner Auditory — Anything you can hear in your mind (inner voice, etc)

Inner Somatic — Emotions/Feelings

As beginners practice Vipassana meditation, they choose one sense plane (or the absence of a sense plane) to focus on. Without forcing thoughts to arise, or forcing thoughts to leave, you allow thoughts (in the given sense plane) to flow into your mind, take note of them, and allow them to drift away. As you practice, you can eventually break apart your thoughts into different sense planes which makes them more manageable and easier to control or accept. It's the ol' "divide and conquer".

ANYWAYS

As you get a little more advanced, you start dealing with something called "Flow". This is present in all forms of meditation, and in most religions. Some may call it divine inspiration (God), some may call it the expansion / contraction of the universe, you guys call it ASMR.

Basically, when your concentration/equanimity/clarity start becoming refined, you'll start noticing the "change" between sensory experiences. If you imagine a dog walking down the street in your head, as long as there is movement (the image is not still), there is change. If you have a feeling in your body that is moving from one part of the body to another, there is change. Practiced meditation students can "isolate" the change, so there is no start point and there is no end point. There is only the change. And that is when you start to realize that the universe is built on change (expansions and contractions), and they are all equal and interconnected. It's like tapping into the "breathing" of the universe.

ANYWAYS, before we drift too far away, lets bring this back to ASMR. There are certain triggers that people have that allow them to temporarily feel this "change". And when you feel this "change" — this "flow" that permeates through the universe — your mind starts to detach from your grounded senses. The "self" begins to disappear. If you feel ASMR, you are feeling the first symptoms of the "no self": tingling or floating sensations, temporary euphoria/peace, etc. It's a very difficult sensation to describe to anybody who has never experienced it.

Anyways, I'm not really a teacher of meditation so i hope that wasn't too convoluted and confusing. The only point I wanted to make is that Buddhist monks and roshis have been playing around with ASMR long before we have.

edit: Another interesting point is that a lot of people's meditation practices are hindered because they get trapped in the seductive quality of these flow states.

From a meditative standpoint, ASMR is just the sensation you get from noting the change between different sensory experiences (often called "flow" in my Vipassana sangha).

While most people (like the people in this subreddit) have arbitrary triggers for it, students of meditation can create this sensation by pure will (more accurately, ASMR is always present in our body/mind, we just don't always have our attention drawn to it).

Subverted congressional law? If it's within his power to not enforce congressional drug policy, then that is exactly what he can do. That is the power of the Executive branch. Nearly every president has realized that except for Obama.

By the way, this is the last response I'm making in this thread. It is clear to me from your comment history that you don't like to argue intelligently or respectfully, so this isn't really how I like to spend my time on reddit. Have a good one!

How about his draconian drug policy?

And when he passes CISPA (initially he promised he would veto it no matter what, but now he supports the senate bill it has been attached to) we'll see if you still feel the same way.

This is such a ridiculous argument. Let me be try and understand what you people are saying here:

We should never complain about a current president because the alternative is so much worse?

That's like saying we should never complain about the state of anything in America because living in a third world country would be so much worse.

And just so you know, a lot of the bad things that Obama have passed could have easily been vetoed. He deserves 100% blame for those things.

which 7 Kingdoms story outside the events of the asoiaf series would you most like to see in a Movie, mini-series, or a novella by JoeTerpin asoiaf

[–]gorillapoop 9 points10 points ago

I don't know if this is the best idea. The fact that we learn these stories secondhand, only through the eyes and ears of the present-day characters, makes the ASOIAF world more real for us. It really puts us into the minds of our present-day characters, and here is why: they experience the history of ASOIAF very much in the way we do — from a distance. They have bits and pieces of the history but much of it is still shrouded in mystery and pieced together by pure imagination.

If they made a series based on Rhaegar, the Blackfyre Rebellion, Valyria's Doom, or something along those lines, I feel like some of the magic will be lost. Seeing these events in close detail will present us with more information about the world than our surrogate characters (Dany, Bran, Arya, Sansa, etc) are ever given.

As you conveniently left out of your quotation, I did clarify first that I have not seen that much of boardwalk empire.

[–]gorillapoop 4 points5 points ago

A majority of original series from HBO do not display graphic sexual content to the same level as the shows I listed above, if at all. Off the top of my head: the Shield, Six Feet Under, John Adams, Flight of the Conchords, Extras, Bored to Death. Even The Wire doesn't have that much sex in it. I haven't seen that much of Boardwalk Empire, but it doesn't seem to have that much sex in it.

You are also overlooking something. HBO doesn't actively create shows with explicit sexual and violent content. Because HBO is known to be one of the few networks that has no qualms with displaying adult content, quite often producers and show creators that want adult content in their show or feel that they need adult content to create a better show will pitch their ideas to HBO first.

People keep telling me they won't read or watch GoT because it's like a porno. Answer me this... by Rtv08cin gameofthrones

[–]gorillapoop 10 points11 points ago

You may get that impression, but there is not a higher amount of sex in the HBO show than there is in the book. If HBO picked a sex and violence heavy piece of literature for adaption because they wanted a particular audience, I have no problem with that. But they have not changed or altered the overall tone/atmosphere of the writing in order to boost ratings.

Also, younger males are not really where the money is. Younger males would be inclined to watch a violent/fantastical show like this with or without the sex scenes. If they really wanted to boost their ratings, they would try to bring in a larger female audience.

Furthermore, having graphic sexual content on-screen has never resulted in more money. Ever. Most movies give an arm and a leg just to make sure they are given a PG-13 rating, and not R-rating. The more sex in a show, the older an audience will have to be to watch it — American parents typically are fine with their children watching violent shows, but as soon as sex makes an appearance the TV goes off (which is sort of what the OP's GRRM quote is all about).

Time for me to garner some downvotes.

You are absolutely incorrect. Every single time somebody on this forum complains about supposedly "gratuitous" sex or violence in the show, they are absolutely incorrect.

What does the sex portray? Perhaps it doesn't advance character or plot. In many cases that is yet to be seen. But more importantly, it paints a strong image of the kind of world Game of Thrones takes place in. This is a world in which sex, violence, rape, incest, and murder float freely in front of the eyes of children. The presence of sex in the show is a constant reminder that Westeros is an incredibly (open) sexual world, and not the kind of place you typically see in books.

If Game of Thrones wanted to pander to an audience, there are many ways that are easier, cheaper, and breeds less negative attention than constantly showing "porn" and "boobies" on screen.

The strong presence of sex, violence, or swearing has effectively portrayed various settings in similar ways for many high quality dramas — Rome, Deadwood, Oz, even the Sopranos. All of these shows consistently use pornographic sex, bloody violence, and over-the-top swearing for no reason other than giving viewers a glimpse into a culture, world, or time period that is markedly different than our own.
