To believe that there is a god that cares about you or me or anything else going on on a spec of dust in the arm of one of hundreds of billions of galaxies is, quite frankly, insane.

The fact that this is true is what makes it so beautiful. To me it's insane to see this beautiful world and all the laws put in place to make such an incredible galaxy and NOT feel special because of it. We've searched for millions of light years and so far we're the only thing even CLOSE to the capabilities we have that we have found. How does that not make you feel special?

I can understand your frustrations with people letting religion get in the way of education though. Just know that not all christians are trying to get evolution knocked out of school. And just as a suicide bomber shouldn't hamper the true beliefs of islam, neither should these christians.

Also, that's similar to saying that athiests are bad people because of how often robbers and rapists and criminals of the sort commit crimes because they don't feel there's any higher power to answer to. It's not till they go to jail that they "find their way" and get religion. That's when they become better people. This happens ALL the time, but this stance is equally as ridiculous. Sure, these guys are getting in the way of society's advancement. They cost us tons of money for police that could've been used for scientific research. But it's not athiesm's fault.

Totally reasonable point.

Perhaps looking at a different translation would help. It looks like you used the NIV, so let's look at the NET bible (Which is the most heavily annotated version and is a pretty dang good translation), we get this

Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness"

The NCV says:

"All Scripture is given by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting fualts, and for teaching how to live right."

The slight difference here being that every scripture is "inspired", or "given" by God. The fact that three translations have three different words here is another argument to the fact that we should interpret his word and not take them all literally.

But here's the thing, If God wanted his words to be put down exactly he would've taken a pen and written them. The only time that I'm aware of in the bible that God spoke DIRECTLY to have things transcribed exactly as he said them was the 10 commandments. Possibly in revelations, John was asked to write down what he saw. God left it up to man to interpret his teachings and put them on paper, and I believe he did this specifically to set the tone of "take these words and apply them to your life in a righteous manner"

well, I certainly can respect that view point, and I hope that even though I know you disagree with mine, you can see where I come from.

Here's how I can best describe my view on topics like this:

  • God exists
  • this god was powerful and knowledgable enough to build the planets and the space. He was powerful enough to make them all work together in this fantastic system which abides by beautiful scientific laws that we're only now starting to really unlock
  • If this being exists, and is capable of doing all of that, who am I to say that his judgment was incorrect when he felt that people weren't ready to learn about certain things at certain times?

I don't know what would have happened if we had known about bacteria and how it worked at this early stage in our development. What if the knowledge of bacteria this early on, along with all of the other facets of human life that were so starkly different to how they are now, would've led to the development of biological warfare that would have wiped the human race out? I have to put my money where my mouth is in "faith" and believe that God knew exactly what he was doing, and that his asessment of the situation was correct.

I'm not discrediting that there are some things in the bible that may have been influenced by those that were writing it, but I am saying that I can't get wrapped up and not see the forest because of all the trees.

I'm not really sure where you get the "literal" bit from Timothy 3:16? To me that coincides fine. God meant for his text to be studied. When presenting a book that is to lead mankind for the rest of time, there is inherantly going to be an extreme amount of depth to all of the text.

One really interesting side of the bible that I am yet to really fully educate myself on is how Jesus in the new testament pretty much says "hey guys, remember all that crazy stuff we said in the old testament...don't worry about that, things are cool now and we've got a new set of rules for you to abide by.". This is the "new covenant" that you hear people speak about, and it seems as though Jesus is acknowledging that the old testament had to be done that way to get everyone's attention and to work with the times, but that times had changed, and now people were ready to have christianity as it was meant.

Now the part that I need to study more on (I haven't gotten there yet), is what all is he dismissing and what all is to remain from what is taught in the old testament. This much, I am admittedly weak on.

the other side of this is that the human race was so young, they may have not been ready for all of that information. Humans had been around for a very long time before the Bible came to be. Had it come out and told them how to build a rocket, it would've meant nothing to them. God had to communicate with us in a way that could be understood and accepted.

the bible doesn't specifically say that we are only 6,000 years old. What I mean by "biblicly sound" is "studied" or "theologically intelligent"

And I can totally see what you mean by "Christian conservatives". Since vocal Reddit hates republicans and christians, I was mistakenly thinking this was just a way for Reddit to express their hatred of two different groups at once :-p

and I can totally agree with that. Unfortunately, reddit likes to see one dumb christian and think that means we're all idiots.

[–]ggk1 -1 points0 points ago

quite the opposite, actually. Flipping that position, it is often those who scoff at religion who are guilty of the dissonance. There is very little in the bible that is not scientifically proven if you really study the original words and how the translations can lead to some of what people view as scientific fallacy.

For instance, the hebrew word used for "day" (yom) in genesis can be interpreted as essentially "period of time". Although evidence points to it likely meaning a literal 24 hours, this is not a certainty. Taking that into account, there's nothing about how genesis says the earth was created that does not match up with the theory of evolution. First came the land and the water, then fish, then land animals, then adam and eve.

Unfortunately, there are so many christians and scientists alike that are unwilling to admit that both sides could be right, that each side has this "gang war" against the other.

edit:spelling

but you're still lumping a few stupid people in and saying that all people in their group are the same. Believe it or not, there are some rather intelligent Christians that are very open to reason while still being very biblicly sound.

This one time I saw an episode of jersey shore. All snookie wanted to do was slut it up and when someone called her out on it she went into a circular reasoning rant about how she was young and just wanted to party. It perfectly personified all women.

That is what you just did to me with lumping my beliefs in with this woman's.

What is the best (reasonably priced) steak in DFW? And who wants to go with me? by advilliousin Dallas

[–]ggk1 0 points1 point ago

please do! I've eaten at a lot of fancy steak houses. The bone in ribeye was hands down the best steak I've had.

Keep in mind, it's a fancy steak house, so that's $60 just for the steak. You'll have to order sides separately.
