That reminded me of Liquid War.

You mean sluggish and unresponsive under water like, let's say, a shark?

Non-programmer/non-sysadmin Linux users: tell us your story! Why do you use Linux, and to what extent? by dizzy_lizzyin linux

[–]gamzer 3 points4 points ago

I had an iMac and noticed I wanted a notebook. I sold the iMac at a great price before I had a replacement machine. At the time, I did not even know what I was going to buy.

My fallback was an age-old ThinkPad with XP. As it was 2011, XP did not satisfy me very much... Having installed some distros in the past I decided to give GNU/Linux a try. I liked it since I first used it many years ago because it was geeky and free, but I had never used it past installing: Some hardware was not working on any machine over all those years and I didn't want to spend the time figuring out such basic things.

Nevertheless, I looked at quite a few distros, then read Arch's philosophy and knew that it was what I was looking for. After installing and configuring it for two days (my previous knowledge was not very deep as you can see), everything worked. This old notebook was usable again, in terms of speed and applications. Made me proud inside. :-)

In no time I knew I didn't want to use OS X anymore. Therefore I didn't go for a MacBook (my initial tendency) but for Apple's favorite darling: Dell. :-)

Only then it was that I started programming full-time and noticed that GNU/Linux was awesome for it. Today, I'm loving the command line and, of course, especially Arch. The whole software/hardware package gives me the best computing experience I've ever had with the (by far) least amount of time spent for system maintenance.

Installing Windows 7 after Arch... help with partitioning? by akiratheoniin archlinux

[–]gamzer 1 point2 points ago

Okay. I have it on sda2, boot it with chainloader in GRUB and it works just fine.

Installing Windows 7 after Arch... help with partitioning? by akiratheoniin archlinux

[–]gamzer -1 points0 points ago

So it's about sda and not about sda1 as basyt stated?

[–]gamzer 0 points1 point ago

Without any explanation I don't believe this. Why should Windows care on which primary partition it is installed?

I have it on sda2 since the beginning of time just to express that for me it is a second class citizen.

Formatting strings in multiple steps by gamzerin learnpython

[–]gamzer[S] 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. The numbers are a great compared to %s%s%s%s%s or the verbose dictionary formatting. And to number {} and {{}} separately is pretty well doable.

[–]gamzer[S] 1 point2 points ago

I read that but didn't notice it was what I was looking for until you explained it.

The only tricky thing is to get the numbering right:

>>> s = "{0} {{0}} {1}"
>>> s.format(1, 3).format(2)
'1 2 3'
>>> s = "{0} {{0}} {{1}} {{2}} {1}"
>>> s.format(1, 5).format(2, 3, 4)
'1 2 3 4 5'

Thanks that is really useful to me!

That's great! Thanks so much. I never saw this feature. Is there some equivalent for the new-school formatting that I'm overseeing as well?

Macro vs micro gameplay by gamzerin truegaming

Interestingly, the having to click fast never bothered me in FPSs but in nearly every RTS I have ever played. Maybe because it feels different to control one entity (your player in the FPS) than to manage many units at different places at different tasks. In an FPS I am just one entity at one place doing one thing. That doesn't stress me. The controls of an FPS are more like an extension to my hands. It's a bit like forgetting the distinction between your keyboard, mouse and actions per minute in favor of just automatically functioning.

Automation without transparency bothers me as well.

Never heard this definition. It seems to me that your definition is at least not in line with that in the Wikipedia (for what it's worth):

Gameplay is the specific way in which players interact with a game, and in particular with video games. Gameplay is the pattern defined through the game rules[...]

Very well said. I'm looking into some of the games you mentioned that I have never heard of. Thank you.

Repetitive actions are one possible aspect of micro, I'd say. It's really hard to make a proper definition.

[–]gamzer[S] 0 points1 point ago

The difference in gameplay is that you don't become better simply by investing lots of time in repetitive actions.

Wouldn't you say that what I call "macro gameplay" is also contained in "game mechanics"?

Interesting definition!

In the macro leveling up example, it does not matter if you used a spell, let's say, 100 or 1000 times as long as the relative number of spell uses are identical.

Example: You have a spell Fire and a spell Ice. Since the last level up, you used Fire 2 times and Ice 4 times. Then Ice gets 2/3 of your spell level ups and Fire 1/3. It wouldn't be an advantage if you used Fire 2000 times and Ice 4000 times. You would not get more level ups just because you did something several thousand times.
