Comparison of paid maternity leave across the world. I continue to wonder why anyone would have a child in the US. by gadget_ukin Parenting

[–]gadget_uk[S] -2 points-1 points ago

Happy to apologise for the repost. Posted from mobile and didn't see it before.

Honestly though, with the costs of labour, the lack of midwifery, the obsession with medicating to "hurry things along" then, inevitably, insane proportion of c-sections - followed by a total lack of support afterwards... I truly wonder why anyone would go through that. Especially when you see how places like Canada do things.

Apart from all the clergy that left because, shock and horror, women are to be allowed to be priests. Oh, and the high ranking bishop that claimed a few years ago that the fatal floods in the uk were gods punishment for our tolerance of gay rights.

There's still a high proportion of dicks in influential positions in the church I'm afraid.

Emile Heskey released by Aston Villa by RebelPenguinin soccer

Is there no reward for the years of loyal service and countless... jogs he made to further the cause of the Villa? Men such as this should not walk quietly into the gloom of obscurity.

Good luck Mr Heskey. You will be always remembered among your peers at Liverpool - the legendary left-wingers like Harry Kewell, Mark Walters and Stewart Downing, in whose mighty company you shall not now feel ashamed.

“Democrat” Roy Schmidt pulls ultimate dick move, jumps to GOP too late for another Dem to run by HouseSpeakerin politics

[–]gadget_uk 2 points3 points ago

At least they're being true to their values. In the UK, our mainstream right-wing party formed a coalition with our most left wing party leaving the centrist (used-to-be-socialist-but-wanted-to-be-elected) Labour party wondering how they were going to play party politics with policies coming from both directions.

The general public, of course, is now in no doubt that the entire political establishment is a shower of shite and that not a single one of them is fit to scrape the crud from our wellies.

I'm sorry to have to write to you like this and tell you that your daughter is under-performing. But I'm part of this system. And I had to confess. by LS69in unitedkingdom

This is terrifyingly accurate, to the point where the numbers and locations add up to me honestly thinking it is my old school.

I'm sure it isn't - it could be any one of the thousands of schools who have to implement this crap in order to receive a 1-2 Ofsted report. The fact that your school is indistinguishable from any of the others will be considered a success in the minds of the soulless automatons who conceived the idea to beigify the education system.

My nephew is about to sit a GCSE in "Resistant Materials". It's actually just a workshop subject - he makes stuff out of wood and has to sit an exam on material properties. I don't have a problem with the lesson, what I want to know is - how much was MeaninglessConsultancy Inc paid to come up with that subject title?

There will be better advice from others here so I just wanted to point something out.

You said that you were spanked "a lot" as a kid but you also said that it kept you in line. Only one of these things is true. Personally, I don't think spanking makes a blind bit of difference to the general behaviour of a child, I believe this because I have never met anyone who says they were only spanked once.

Aerohive vs. Meraki by whiskeyandrevengein networking

[–]gadget_uk 2 points3 points ago

Don't know Meraki but I've put a few Aerohive networks in. Quite good products - although the "controller less design" thing is a bit of a red herring. It's great for meshing where you don't have cabling to every location - you can still deploy wireless APs and use 5ghz as the back haul instead of cat5. If you have no use for that USP then I can't really see why you'd select it over other platforms though.

Wil Wheaton: ‘Yo Hollywood, Let Me Download Ubuntu’ by motangin Ubuntu

[–]gadget_uk 0 points1 point ago

Nah, it was the latest version on Fedora. When you first start seeding it connects fine but, unbeknown to me, after a while it won't accept any more connections. This kills the ratio.

I had no idea this was going on and when I noticed my ratio dropping through the floor I assumed it was my router or firewall or ISP causing the issue. By the time I found the transmission bug I had been banned. I'm on Vuze now, a bit bloaty but it works fine.

[Build Help] (Please Help me No one ever reply's to me) Pc freezes 5 to 10 mins in to any game or when rendering video. by ahlatkiin buildapc

[–]gadget_uk 0 points1 point ago

I've had this issue twice now and on both occasions it turned out to be the gpu. It was only in certain usage conditions and even only on certain games. It was definitely related to cooling because I could extend the life by aiming a desk fan into the case. Plus, it was worse when the weather was warm. It drove me crazy for months, I replaced the psu, ram, CPU cooler then sorted out the cabling, bought a better case...

Then I borrowed a gpu from a friend, no more crashes after that. I strongly recommend you try the same thing.

After the first year, the benefits drop off because their nutritional needs change. Breast milk does not supply the number of calories or the right mix of macronutrients to sustain toddler growth.

Well, no. Nobody is recommending exclusive breastfeeding beyond one year. There are still numerous benefits in terms of anti-bodies, immunity and emotional wellbeing though.

Honestly, any mother who breastfeeds for a year is a hero in my book. Going beyond that is a bonus for that child every day and I truly hope people get more used to seeing it as time goes on.

Well, it was humans' interest in another illicit pastime that drove the development of the Internet. A tool that has spread education across the world and allowed us to communicate in ways that would have been considered magic only a few decades ago. We owe to it to the forefathers of this wonderful medium to continue to build on the foundations they made, lest it all collapse without the breath of life it was given.

It's a shame Keano got such a hard time over that comment - he was spot on. Not just for United either - they may have pioneered the corporate hospitality monster but it took no time for the others to follow suit.

I'd agree with that. Definitely worth checking all the fans. As a test, open the case and aim a desk fan in there at full blast - see if it stays on for longer. Low tech but effective.
