Is this really how "Christians" are supposed to act? by madcanukin religion

[–]furless 0 points1 point ago

This is an unfortunate situation, but remember that the provision of the Consititution is freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. Those who want to expunge religious expression from public life would understandably not be viewed with placid acceptance. If you think that the only "good" Christian is a meek, accepting mouse, then you have not paid attention to the famous song, "Onward, Christian Soldiers".

I want to come out as bi to my family and friends and everyone. I am tired of being in the closet. Any advice? by notmyrealaccount0202in bisexual

[–]furless 1 point2 points ago

It sounds like you have more going on than you are saying. My bet is that some of your "family and friends and everyone" will be accepting -- some might already know -- and there will also be some who will not be amused. You probably already have a sense of which is which. Who, really, are you targetting?

Another alternative to "coming out" is simply to live your life without trying to hide your preferences. Most people don't put their political affiliation in your face, but they will tell you if you ask them. It seems to me that, in Western countries at least, we should all consider sex, religion, and politics to be nobody else's business.

Conservatives Trying to Rewrite the History of Civil Rights by streetlitein politics

[–]furless -11 points-10 points ago

I suppose that part of the writing/rewriting of history also has to do with definitions. For example, suppose that school vouchers and related initiatives that allow parents and students to "fire" poor performing schools is found to be connected with better outcomes. Would that be a "civil rights" issue, because it helps the disadvantaged level the playing field, or would it be yet another cynical move by conservatives to break the unions, who stand, after all, on the side of the little guy?

I just found out that Mordin's "I am the very model of a scientist Salarian" song is based off of this. by VitaminsEverydayin masseffect

If you should see all of "The Pirates of Penzance", you will probably recognize a few more tunes. After that, try "The Mikado". You may never have heard of Gilbert & Sullivan, but their influence extends far beyond fans of light opera.

(Warning! This is very important. If you ever see a Gilbert & Sullivan performance, never, under any circumstance, try to make sense of anything.)

So, the tldr, as they say, is that Quebec students and government are both crazy. Thanks for the clarification.

I have a Mormon girlfriend and I'm atheist How do i save this relationship? by ragtagcapybara4in AskReddit

[–]furless 1 point2 points ago

It seems to me that what is important is not your particular disagreement on a (lack of a) diety, but how you both deal with differing points of view. Today it's God, and tomorrow it will be spending priorities, politics, or the type of window curtains. If you cannot find a way to agree to disagree, then pack up now and save everyone grief down the road.

Here is some advice, however. You said "no forever alone stuff", but unless you can love someone without trying to remake them into a version of yourself, you will be forever alone.

At least you will be comforted by the certain knowledge that you are infallibly always in the right.

I want to convert my 9 year old PC into a Linux OS. Which version of Ubuntu should I look into? Here are my specs by sgtsaughterin Ubuntu

[–]furless 2 points3 points ago

9 years old? Wouldn't it be cheaper, in the long run, just to shell out a few hundred on a modern computer? Keeping older computers running has got to cost a premium, surely.

Really? If you carry it to its logical extreme, you will find yourself without: cheap labor; presidents that send a thrill up your leg; and movies/diamonds/money.

Elizabeth Hasselback:Typical Conservative Ignoramus by jesuzin politics

[–]furless 1 point2 points ago

How is her questioning ignorant? It seems to me that all worthwhile news interview shows bring up questions that challenge the guest. What's more, the questions are in all likelihood generated by the show's research team, so if a question is inaccurate, it's possibly somebody else's fault. I wonder whether you think Biden is also an "Ignoramus", given his penchant for mis-speaking.

Personally, I try to avoid labelling a person based on a single remark. People have brain farts all the time. For me, it's the accumulation of words and actions that indicate their philosophy and character.

Try counselling for sure.

The big problem, as you've said, is that you can do well but you are sabotaging yourself. You will not be free of your problems until you have a handle on that.

It is possible, as eightNote suggests, that you have too much coursework (burned out, maybe?), but that is something you can take up in counselling. Don't beg off by thinking you're anything special, because they've heard everything.

TIL that Terra Nova was the most expensive TV series ever made and yet was cancelled after one season. Ouch. by PickyConnorin todayilearned

[–]furless 13 points14 points ago

It had a lot of potential, but for me it had several weaknesses:

  • It had a weird "Lost" element, with a mystery around strange markings on rocks. Wouldn't there be enough drama with establishing a self-sustaining colony?
  • It seems to me that the leader of the colony is, essentially, a dictator, with no limites on his authority and no accountability to anyone. This dynamic, along with political pressures and civil liberties, should have been explored.
  • The characters acted excessively stupid. I simply stopped caring after the nth episode of idiocy.
  • This might have been addressed after I stopped caring, but there should have been a more plausible explanation of the "time travel" (e.g. such as parallel worlds).

Georgia becomes the seventh state to cut off abortions at 20 weeks. No exceptions for rape or incest by davidreiss666in Liberal

[–]furless 1 point2 points ago

I don't know anything about the particular law, but if the justification for the cut off of abortions is "the sanctity of life", then it seems to me that "no exceptions for rape or incest" is merely the consistent application of the principle. If there were exceptions, then the "sanctity of life" reasoning would be exposed as a canard. (In other words, a 20-week old fetus is human -- unless the Daddy was bad -- in which case it's just a non-tumorous growth.)

I understand that the argument is not as black and white as that, however. Along the edges of the human/thing decision there must be a sea of shades of grey. At the end of the day, however, a law that is clear may not be morally correct in all situations, but it does have the important virtue of reducing uncertainty.

This is good advice, especially for someone who is still trying to fit in. If things go awry, she could probably cause a lot more harm to your career than you can to hers.

What should I do with this potentially dangerous girl? Advice NEEDED by Louizidunzin relationships

[–]furless 1 point2 points ago

It is possible that your gal pal has turned over a new leaf, but it is not likely.

A person's character rarely changes. If you doubt this, consider all the people you know and whether they have substantially changed the way they behave. In those few cases where people have changed, there is usually some traumatic event ... not some party girl who continues to party, get drunk, and tell you what you want to hear.

[Accounting] Help with accounting ratios with deciding to invest in a business by r3dn1t3in HomeworkHelp

[–]furless 1 point2 points ago

There are a few different ways to do analysis of this sort. First, you can look at the ratios and compare them to the same ratios for the entire industry. Are they in-line with or outperforming the industry, or are they lagging?

Second, you can do a horizontal analysis to see if there are any notable trends over the last three to five years.

The important thing, overall, to remember in investing is the return on investment. If it is less than you can get elsewhere for lower risk, then, all else being equal, you should probably prefer the lower risk option.

Girlfriend went agnostic, parents went agonistic (sorry this is a repost I sent it to the wrong sub reddit :p) by IAmWinter1988in relationship_advice

[–]furless 0 points1 point ago

It isn't quite clear: are you saying they went from atheism to agnosticism, or are you saying they went from theism to agnosticism?

In any event, why is this a problem? Religious belief is rarely constant, and struggles with faith are common. Even Jesus was less than pleased with his Dad (cf. "why are you forsaken me?").
