Need help finding a tough, powerful laptop by fungusgolemin SuggestALaptop

[–]fungusgolem[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, and yeah I just meant durable for a consumer laptop. He has one that is starting to fall apart but worked well enough for the time he had it. So just something that is well built, not necessarily built for that purpose.

Thanks for pointing out Thinkpads.

And what about cooling the northbridge, ect. Just leave the stock fans in?

Also, any advice on the GPU would be appreciated. I'm out of touch with all that. I'm looking for best bang for buck from about $220 to $300

Oh, that's cool. I don't plan on going crazy with OCing though so do you think the extra expense over a solid air cool will be worth it? Although it does have a cool factor to it :p

The CPU cooler I was looking at was 40-50ish as opposed to water-cooling being about 100

Thanks for the feedback, and yeah, I agree bang for buck the i5 is the way to go. I think i'll stick with the i7 though, the extra $50 I think will be worth it for Video and 3D.

Right, now that you put it like that 16 seems unnecessary. I think i'll scale back :p

I just heard that the i7 series helped a bit with rendering and video editing since its multi-threaded. The 16gig of ram may be a bit unnecessary though. I'm trying to future proof it a bit too. I was thinking that 16gig might not be too crazy, once you start throwing around 2-3gig video files with effects added stuff really starts to bog down, plus its only another $45 and I was playing with the idea of running a RAM drive for shits and giggles (although I haven't properly researched this yet)... what do you think?

Yeah, I was looking at the Evercool Transformer 4 actually. I'm kinda scared of water cooling...

Atheists within the military: Good or a bad thing?? by fearachievedin atheism

What is this? My brain just snapped.

You're hardly atheists. by throwmeharderin atheism

[–]fungusgolem 1 point2 points ago

As a deeper question, If god created the laws that govern our universe and serves to do nothing else, why care? He has no other effect on us so worship is useless, and if everything non random needs a creator, where is his?

You're hardly atheists. by throwmeharderin atheism

[–]fungusgolem 1 point2 points ago

I'm not even going to get into the laws as where they come from and what facilitates them is beyond my understanding. Yes I am familiar, from that view everything is random, but with those laws in place its kind of like an organized version of random. Also quantum mechanics is based around probability so there is that. You have a misunderstanding of the concept of random. The whole point of science is an understanding of our reality, and questioning it. So I'm not sure how you arrived at your conclusion that I am a sheep. Also, why does there have to be a beginning or end to the universe? And why do laws existing facilitate a god-like creator?

Why do all planets in our solar system orbit on relatively the same flat plane. by JoePitsin askscience

[–]fungusgolem 0 points1 point ago

As a guess, I believe that solar systems have a spin when forming from a cloud of gas, like a galaxy. This would flatten out the system. Also anything going against the flow so to speak would be yanked out of orbit or destroyed by the larger planets.

Lets break it down. * "Atheism is a personal disbelief in "God". People generally become atheists by comprehending their environment" True * "or the universe as random and not intelligently designed." Not true, while Atheists believe there is no god, or intelligent designer the Universe is not entirely random. There are fundamental laws that govern the events that happen around us. These laws are not fully understood, we just don't subscribe to the notion that because we don't currently understand it, that it facilitated by a higher entity. * "you're claiming to believe that human sexuality just happened that way" human sexuality/sexuality in general developed (as opposed to asexuality) in order to facilitate more genetic diversity * "animals with all their interesting variations is simply a result of probability" not entirely true, think about it this way in a smaller scale, say we live in long grass and giant birds hunt us taller people are more susceptible to being taken and eaten, so as a result shorter people will be more prolific. Or over a longer term height may remain the same, but our musculature and skeletal system develop in a way to facilitate easier movement while remaining low to the ground * "and the moon just happens to be comparative to the sun in perspective size." sometimes things are just luck, I mean life in general is pretty cool considering if our planets position was moved a little we'd be toast or frozen. That being said, the universe is essentially endless, so somewhere life will develop, hence us. Also, I think with the size of the universe, there is lots of life out there, just the probability of it being somewhere relatively close to us is really small, so we'll probably never find it. * "I say you're liars. You have hardly thought about the universe." That is ridiculous to say, especially coming from a religious person. Your belief is lazy. Oh its too hard to think about, so god did it! Fuck off! Scientific research is not easy, but over thousands of years we've progressed from sitting around campfires making tools to having reached the point where we can fly around the globe in 8 hours, if we subscribed to your bullshit or if the church had been successful in crushing scientific research (Galileo and countless others) we'd still be throwing rocks at each other and comparing our respective prophets dick sizes. * "You simply treat atheism as a social club and method of patching that hopelessly leaky dam known as security in your own intelligence." Sure, some people do but that is infinitely more true of religious groups. How is it less intelligent to search for answers instead of taking the cop out answer that is god? * "You're nothing but half-minded intermediates -- rebels -- hipsters. After all; what need would a true atheist have for posting & laughing at variations of "religious people are dumb" all day?" Not all of us poke fun at those who are religious, however there will always be those in any group who do. However rational thought is a good thing. Questioning your existence is the best way to make progress, and through progress better mankind. However, you don't have to be Atheist to do so, and I respect your beliefs. However ignorance is intolerable, so don't come to me with a half baked argument like this again, research and understand what you are arguing against before you do so. Kindly grant me your rebuttle. =)
