By the letter of the law, yes you would be arrested for manslaughter if you killed them. It is your responsibility to be aware of ALL of your surroundings. If a child is close enough to the road to "jump" in front of your car, it is your responsibility to be aware of that and prepare for that possibility.

He killed someone with his vehicle. That is grossly negligent no matter how you slice it. You are responsible at all times for knowing your surroundings when piloting a vehicle. If you hit something, it is your fault you hit it.

Odds are that he's going to be more careful around cyclists than 90% of the drivers out there from now on.

And he only had to kill one. What an upstanding person.

People forget that most of the time with Windows, you get it preinstalled. If they knew what a nightmare windows is to install from scratch without a manufacturer supplied restore disc they might give linux a little more slack. Ubuntu in fact is one of the easiest OS installs I've ever encountered.

I have noticed that it takes a good minute or so for nautilus to display anything. There is a quite large lag. Is that maybe what you are running into? Are you waiting long enough?

But only the top-level heirarchy works. I can copy files into and out of the root, and see files and folders in root, but when going into any directory they all look empty, and copying files into them appears to work but doesn't.

I am not seeing this issue. It works flawlessly (albiet a bit slow to load) on 12.04.
