Turns out Dartmouth frats are horrifyingly disgusting. Who'd have thought? by haldeanin columbia

Okay. Okay. I've been to both schools (dartmouth undergrad, columbia grad), and this article is over the top. This is NOT your typical dartmouth student or dartmouth experience.

The Truth About Post-Workout Nutrition - "Don't eat for an hour after you workout" by AhmedFin weightroom

[–]ftothe3 0 points1 point ago

That was a good read. The author makes a good argument and does it in an entertaining way. The textbook he quotes in the beginning was actually the textbook I used in undergraduate biochemistry!

That being said, the dogma exists for a reason. If anything, this process is a minor source of glucose (the blog post mentions that this is not a "cost effective" route of producing glucose) and only occurs during "extreme" diet conditions, like the atkins diet or starvation. However, most people on the atkins diet are not ketogenic, which they would be if they followed the diet strictly. Finally, as we see in starvation muscle wasting occurs as a means to harvest amino acids for gluconeogenesis. Using amino acids for gluconeogenesis is much more "cost effective."

TL;DR: The conversion of fatty acids to glucose may occur, but this process serves a very minor role and occurs only under severe conditions.

Okay impossible was too strong of a word. The computer modeling paper you linked to demonstrates that it is theoretically possible. However, it hasn't been experimentally demonstrated to occur.

Correct. The glycerol backbone of triglycerides can be used for gluconeogenesis. However, he didn't say triglycerides; he said fatty acids. If he's trying to be "scientific" he shouldn't make a mistake like this.

Biochemist here. While he might be right that a post workout insulin spike is unnecessary, the following is false.

your body is forced to swiftly convert fatty acids into glucose, via gluconeogenesis, which are then used for glycogen replenishment in your muscle.

Gluconeogenesis from FFAs is IMPOSSIBLE*. This is basic biochemistry.

edit: *more carefully phrased: hasn't been convincingly demonstrated to occur in mammals.

While transient global amnesia is fascinating, these studies haven't told us anything we didn't already know. The hippocampus and CA1 have been shown time and time again to be essential for memory formation.
