I'm not even saying you should, I'm just saying it can be done. I understand and agree with all of your points.

It's all a matter of unit discipline.

Oh yeah, and some people couldn't take it and were correctly removed. I heard of one cadet break down and cry in the fetal position. He or she was removed from the Army, I believe.

Speaking as a young officer, rest assured that we are tested several dozens, if not a hundred times in no-win or ridiculously-impossible-to-win scenarios. I've watched whole squads and platoons wiped out, (potential) officers break and be removed from the military altogether.

I'm not saying this weeding out happens often (enough). However, the system is not in the same galaxy as perfect, and plenty of crap bags get through.

My experience is in the army, so your mileage may vary.

This wasn't exactly me, but it deserves mention because I was there and was a victim. I am a little late to the party, but I hope it gets read.

My unit was on the demolitions range and this woman, a national guardswoman (not that they are all bad or anything), was just a total fuck-up. Awkward socially (though really a sweet attitude so you forgave it) and just a big-time complainer. Pretty much the last soldier you want to be around. Let's call her Charlie; Charlie had, by some cruel twist of the fates, been given the detonator for one of our explosions (called 'shots').

This may seem backwards to some, but the military is ridiculously safety-conscious. I know, they pay us to run around shooting at people and getting shot at and they are always harping on safety. Anyways, I digress. This fateful day, we had set up a pretty hefty shot of explosives and somehow the detonator was in her hands. The range officer gave us the go ahead to get in the bunkers, so we all clambered in our gear and awkwardly huddled in these shitty concrete huts.

Before ever detonation, you are supposed to give a countdown. Well, Charlie got a little excited. I'm not completely sure everyone was in the bunkers, but I was hardly in mine. We all heard this shrill voice yell "FIVE F-" followed by a very unexpected and very loud explosion.

She had a premature detonation. So much fail and so many soiled pairs of pants.

Honestly, seeing what military grade explosives (to include Comp H6, which is a lower RDX composition than what was supposedly used in those Comp B sticky bombs) do to liquids and considering the fact that the human body is mostly liquid which is incompressible, I can believe that scene.

Without a doubt: waking up to machine gun fire.

This is closely followed by waking up covered in centipedes in my bivy sack. The day had been long and I left my sack piled up in my hooch, which proved to be a flashing neon sign that said "Disgusting and horrible eldritch creatures of the forest, COME TO ME!" That night I was exhausted so I didn't bother shaking it out. I quickly fell asleep in the (unbeknownst to me) sack 'o centipedes. Approximately 30 minutes later, the centipedes woke up for their nightly... centipede duties or what the fuck ever they do (causing nightmares I assume is one of their functions).

This was shortly followed by me waking up feeling like every inch of my skin was doing the tango with Satan's pets (centipedes) and almost comically (if, again, I wasn't covered in centipedes at the time) trying to not scream and give away our position while struggling against the zipper which had somehow turned into a Gordian zipper-knot contraption. I finally freed myself of this billion-legged sack of death and terror and proceeded to beat the centipedes into the dirt with my flashlight.

Needless to say, the rest of that exercise was spent thoroughly airing out and inspecting my bivy sack every day.
