IamA Hollywood film director (Killer Joe, The Exorcist, French Connection). I'm William Friedkin. AMA. by IAmWilliamFriedkinin IAmA

[–]fosterwallacejr 0 points1 point ago

Do you remember Chris Newman? Production sound mixer? He is my professor and I recently had him and Linda Blair sign my boss' Mondo release poster for the film, all we could do was sit around and say "What if we could get Friedkin to sign this thing!?"

Love your work Mr. Friedkin, know that you are still very much alive and part of the discussion in film schools everywhere!

Things your English teachers told you about writing that authors proved to be total bullcrap? by MenWhoStareAtG0ATSEin books

[–]fosterwallacejr 0 points1 point ago

Outlines. When we were young we had these little forms to fill out every paragraph subject in a 3-paragraph essay, then the next box was the topic sentence, then the next was bullets points for what your following sentences were to be...wtf its not an "outline" if youre writing the essay but inside of a worksheet / form thing

Stephen gets really overwhelmed with jealousy (like most people do) about the massive intellect of David Foster Wallace, so he writes a horror novel about the late great DFWs tragic son wandering around in a kill or be killed alternate america

I looooove traffic even though everyone hates it. Unless there is a pressing matter to get to I love getting into traffic (even standstill) because its usually a solid excuse and you can just sit and hang out in your car w/ music. Probably amplified by the fact that I live in the city so I dont drive much - and when I do its towards my family (delays welcomed)

I think a big factor in what youre saying (and I totally agree) is that in SG:A they are removed Earth. They have to have a survivalist instinct at least in the beginning and then when Earth is contacted there are political rammifications...in SG-1 there is just an ultra liberal general who lets them do whatever they wish and sometimes weird sacrifices are made not for necesitty but to move the show along

I'm a high school English teacher. What books should everyone read in high school? by SymbolicRevolutionin books

[–]fosterwallacejr 0 points1 point ago

My senior english teacher was a very special individual who made Shakespeare come alive by reading it himself out loud and then stopping as often as needed to analyze the text / unravel it, if you think youre up to the task Macbeth is a perfect play to engage that age group: action, adventure, and the normal amount of Shakespeare awesomeness.

While it is possible to spec a PC for good audio / visual editing or design, the reason why macs have that reputation is because the culture that exists around those areas / industries / etc is completely mac based. I will always own both a mac and PC even though I grew up building my own PCs due to counter-strike because I went to film school, and working on PC when the rest of your professional world is mac-based is no bueno.

Also- there are two sides to everything, like it would be easy to believe that apple is the elitist company with all sorts of restrictions but PC pulls that shit too. Example: harddrives. Whoever the fuck invented NTFS file formatting can do straight to hell, on PC factory formatted drives you cant move >4GB files between drives, so when I show up for some derpy derp corporate client who just went and bought a western digital for cheap storage its a HUGE headache and PC / Windows doesnt help the problem. On Windows you cant mount a mac formatted drive, on OS X you can mount anything, transfer anything, DO ANYTHING w/ more stable and faster file management.

What were/will be some of your best game release events? by Catman789in truegaming

[–]fosterwallacejr 0 points1 point ago

Downloading and pre-loading a game was very new when Half Life 2 came out, that was special because it was a new kind of release, some of us came to school the next day having woken up at 3am to play, others still had it waiting for us after school...it was just a cool point in history really

Id also like to point out that all the modern release stories in this thread are super negative...wtf

Organized protest / communication against Diablo DRM? by fosterwallacejrin gaming

[–]fosterwallacejr[S] 0 points1 point ago

how / where is the crack? I havent bought it yet but I would if I could crack it to play offline

With the release of Diablo 3, what is your view on "Always Online" DRM? by zuyxin truegaming

[–]fosterwallacejr 0 points1 point ago

Im against it only practically, I dont care about "what it means for the industry" or "the future of gaming" (well i do but thats not why i probably wont buy the game) the reason I cant buy it is because, despite having lived in upper middle class domiciles my whole life (like a lot of reddit) American internet is simply not up to snuff to try to ALWAYS be connected for long and involved playing sessions. Im pretty well off, live on my own and have a strong internet connection for streaming etc but there are dropouts etc etc and if that disconnects me from a single player game then theres no reason to play like wtf

Two Favourites You Think Everyone Should Read by katzirrain books

[–]fosterwallacejr 1 point2 points ago

Coming Up For Air - George Orwell, mainly because people would learn that his best books arent his most popular, its great to be drawn into a reading habit and culture with books like Animal Farm or 1984 but this book will definitely prime a reader for a life in literature

Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace, this book will not only persuade you that length doesnt have to intimidate, but also convince you of the depth of what one human can achieve. So many deep and complex characters from one man is...crazy!
