I highly recommend Lenovo Thinkpads. They're solid, well made, work well, run linux without a lot of problems (if you need that) and are easy to modify/fix. Some of the models even have a 15 hour battery.

Yeah, I don't understand why they just didn't post an informative response first and leave out the condescending bullshit.

This is one of the reasons I hate doing homework online. by Xistanin math

That would be fine as long as the online system shows complete solutions, the frustration is two part.

The first is that you're struggling with the system when you know what you're doing and it negatively effects your grade.

The second is not having any information about why your answer is incorrect, how to solve it, or even sometimes what the correct answer is after you've gotten it wrong (usually to prevent collaboration among students).

If the online homework is ungraded and shows you how to solve the problems then it would be a great resource for learning and all my complaints about it wouldn't exist. The mastering chemistry program I used was essentially exactly like this.

Yeah the mastering series was the only one I've used that was actually better than paper. It would walk you through how to solve each type of problem.

I think this is better done with optional homework and small on point quizzes that are directly related to the optional homework.

I agree, lots of students seem to go to college or university because they're expected to (natural life progression) not because they know what they're going to do. These students seem to end up taking 'easier' majors and don't know what they're even interested in, spend thousands of dollars on their education and then end up unemployed. I would think many would be much happier and more successful had they gone into a vocational school doing something they actually liked.

None of this is helped by the fact life decisions like that can be difficult to make at 16/17 and that high school teachers are not usually the brightest people around.

Haha I think that was my first reaction when I found the short story on the web a couple of years ago. Something today reminded me of it - thought people here might like it.

Is the caste system not rationalized by reincarnation? - something I thought to be pretty integral to Hinduism.

I've heard several of these stories where Lyme disease isn't diagnosed correctly, I wonder how often it occurs? That's great you're going back though (and it's thankfully over).

I think it was more likely that people were asking for more specific advice and your comment was too vague to be useful (rather than a rejection of helping people who need it).

In college my favorite teachers gave ungraded homework with fully worked out solutions. It was the most effective study tool and really allowed you to learn how to solve the problem sets on your own easily. I understand the balance is tricky, but the online systems penalize good students with the hope of dragging the ones who wouldn't do the ungraded work along. I think graded homework in general wastes student time, since the student knows best what type of problems they have to practice.

In highschool they started with online homework (school island I think it was called). That system was useless and usually the problems were unrelated to class content - to me it was a symbol of teacher laziness. Some teachers in the school used programs to generate tests and now with the online homework they basically did nothing.

I thought it was an interesting, somewhat comical short story. Something reddit circa 2007 would have liked.

[–]fossuser 40 points41 points ago

Online homework should not get in your way. To date I've seen only one online homework system that wasn't complete shit (it was mastering chemistry). Homework is a tool to learn and online systems like this (the worst I've seen was Wiley Plus) waste the students time. Any bugs like this are unacceptable and 'within the hour' doesn't fix it.

Haha yeah that's what I like about it. It starts off as a plausible first person account of a frustrated cubicle worker and then escalates quickly into a completely ludicrous ending.
