Little Vancouver tidbits/funfacts by criticalhitin vancouver

[–]foodfighter 13 points14 points ago

The first Starbucks in Vancouver is the one at the Downtown/Waterfront Seabus station.

The Guinness family in Ireland financed the construction of the Lions Gate bridge, recovering the costs thru a bridge toll which was removed when the bridge was sold to the City for $1. Oh, plus a huge chunk of then-undeveloped West Van (aka the "British Properties")

I didn't see the insulin, inhaler or heart medication. I guess they're hidden under all those candy bars.

Have you been to Sunrise Market before? Not exactly like your average Safeway or IGA...

I hafta beg to differ on that. I have seen produce there labelled "Product of China" and I specifically avoid it. I'm suspecting the unmarked stuff is of similar origin.

Is there a coin counting machine somewhere in the west end or yaletown area? by walrus0in vancouver

[–]foodfighter 2 points3 points ago

BankOfMontreals (some of them) have free coin counters - free until May 22, after which time they charge 7.5% if you have more than $250.

There is one in Kits on 4th just West of Vine (across from the Safeway). Just used it this morning.

Edit: FYI you do not need to be a BMO customer to use it.

Recognized a terrorism plot suspect as a former high school classmate. What's the most shocking thing you've seen about a former acquaintance? by pwolter0in AskReddit

[–]foodfighter 0 points1 point ago

Had a real cute redhead in a few of my highschool classes, we got on well, talked a lot, flirty comments in each others yearbooks, that kinda stuff. Never went out or hooked up tho'.

A few years later, she's a high school teacher herself now, banging one of her students

Funny you should ask. I just got home 30 minutes ago from tearing a strip off another driver.

I'm driving towards home along a single-lane-plus-curb-parking wide street when up in my rear view comes a young Chinese woman in a BMW X3 with California plates (I live in Vancouver, Canada).

She's weaving between the traffic in the road and the parked cars along the curb at 70-80 km/h.

Did I mention that it was a frigging <<ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZONE>>?!?! CLEARLY MARKED!!!

She gains all of 5 seconds over the rest of traffic, which she then loses as she has to wait at the red light at the end of the block.

Before I can vent on her, a City ByLaw car right in front of me (whom she blew by in her slalom trip) pulls up next to her and appears to read her the riot act while the traffic light is red.

As the light goes green, the City worker drives off and before X3 can pull away, I angle my truck - which is way less shiny than her Beemer - right in front of her to prevent her moving, roll down my window and shout "That's a F$cking School zone! What the H$ll are you doing?!?!"

Wide-eyed behind her fake D&G sunglasses she's waving her hands going "Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!" Over and over. I drive away in disgust.

This city is really going to the crapper...

Can anyone recommend a car stereo shop in Vancouver? by trelenain vancouver

[–]foodfighter 0 points1 point ago

I had very good work done at Best Buy on Cambie @ 6th.

Went to a Future Shop and one other place (whose name escapes me - might have been a Ralph's) both of whom were going to rape me on the installation - I drive an uncommon vehicle.

The folks at Best Buy were professional, recommended a superior yet cheaper unit than the one I had my eye on, and installed it super-cheap. Works great 2.5 years going.

Nope just tried there today. They carry a Canadian-made variant, but not the Hawaiian stuff.

As in the Budapest restaurant on Main St. which seems to have closed down and reopened as the Danube Restaurant @ Boundary and Hastings?

'Cuz it looks to me more like an Eastern European Deli / Pastry shop kinda place, but have you had these packaged sausage brands there before?

"While I accept the onus is on my to read the sings I just can't help but wonder what if I had been away for the two weeks that the signs were up?"

What if someone goes away for 6 months on sabbatical?

I lived for almost 10 years in my old place, an in one of the bike lockup areas, there was a flat-tired bike that was there the day I moved in, and still there the day I moved out. So where does one draw the line?

If you genuinely have a temporary pile of stuff that you are getting rid of soon, I'd recommend sticking a big apologetic sign on your pile, indicating who it belongs to, how to contact you, why it is where it is, and by what date you'll remove it.

Rules are there for a reason. Such is the joy of communal living.

The alternative is the $1.2 Million mortgage so you too can own your very own personal detached freehold-titled slice-o'-heaven with all the rights and responsibilities of looking after everything yourself.

Not to rain on your parade, but from the tone of your post I assume that you are not on Council yourself. Speaking as someone on the other end of the stick (on Strata Council for many many years), allow me to chime in here.

I don't know how many living units are in your building, but if you are allowed to store extra stuff like you were, everyone should be. So multiply your personal clutter in the hall times however many. Gets out of hand real quick. Trust me. Next thing you know the storage area looks like the set of "Hoarders" and the Fire Inspector starts handing out edicts.

Also, some buildings have the assigned unit numbers printed right on the lockers, while some do not (for security reasons). If not, you can't assume that whoever was doing the hallway cleanout knew for sure that the stuff belonged to you; maybe they didn't even know you. Maybe they just had a hate-on for you personally.

Now I can't speak for all Stratas, but while some are staffed by power-hungry passive-aggressive types with their own little agendas, I think most are made up of people who volunteer their time and efforts to do all the little things that need doing to keep the place going. So when someone on Council takes the time and effort to put up a "Notice to Residents", frickin' take the 30 seconds to read it.

And scan the lobby/communal message boards once in a while for Strata notices. Maybe your building has a designated area for such notices. If not, suggest to Strata that they put one in.

If you feel that there was insufficient time or coverage of notices given, by all means go before Strata and voice your complaints; you have every right to do so. However keep in mind that I don't believe that Strata even needs to give any warning to clear common areas; doing so is a matter of courtesy only. They are called "Common Areas" not "Free-for-all excess storage areas".

And finally, if you want to voice your displeasure by refusing to pay your Strata fees, keep in mind that such withholding of fees is one of the few areas where Stratas can (and probably will) put a lien against your property title. Makes it less fun when you decide to sell.

By the way, you're an Owner; if you're really pissed, don't just complain - petition to run for Strata yourself! If your Strata is really that totalitarian, there will be others who feel like you and will be happy to vote you in at the next AGM. If not, well - maybe that's something worth learning too.

tl;dr - Nice try - read my post and learn something.

Edit: Just to show I'm not just being a killjoy, FYI for future reference you probably have more options regarding things like your leaky scooter. Read your ownership documents, but you may in fact own your parking space outright (which I did in my old place) instead of as a share of common property, and unless you were gushing oil a la Exxon Valdez (lawyers call it "unreasonable"), then if you are leaking less than any other vehicle in the garage - including that huge old V8 auto parked across the way - then Council has no real recourse. Making such calm comments is definitely worth standing up in front of Council and doing.

Oh - and even if they did fine, unpaid Strata fines (not monthly fees) are something for which Council can not impose a lien against your property.

Great answer, but I confess after reading the first word, I sidetracked to UrbanDictionary to look up obscure Australian greetings/acronyms.

I read that as "T.R.P., mate!" Whatever the heck that was supposed to mean... ("That's Right Pukkah!"???)

Then I read further. The internet has changed me...

Robert Munsch gave an interview where he talked about reactions to that book.

After it was published, he was surprised to find a number of people were really upset with him for writing the story; the whole premise of tiptoeing into the kids room and rocking them while they slept. He couldn't understand why.

Later on, some of these people wrote back to apologize to him, explaining that they themselves had been victims of sexual abuse from a family member when they were young, and the story brought back memories of nighttime "visits"; sometimes repressed and/or forgotten. Sad.

Another trivia - Munsch wrote that story as personal therapy for the loss of his two children, both of whom were stillborn (they tried twice, apparently).

He said after each delivery, he was given this small dead baby to mourn briefly before it was taken away, and all he could think to do was rock it (back and forth, back and forth) and sing it a lullaby while realizing that this would be how his children would be - his babies forever.

Whenever he reads that story aloud in public, he says he has the story memorized and he tells it like he is reading a script. If you watch him perform it, he puts less emotion into the reading of this story than any other one he ever does; otherwise he says he'll just break down.

Quite the amazing author.
