Nice revolver! Is that an S&W 686? I'd personally go with the Oliva.

Soviet Nazis shooting Jews in Russia, 1941 [450x317] by chickenMcNugsin HistoryPorn

[–]fmpossum 1 point2 points ago

At first I thought these were Ukrainian or Belorussian collaborators, but I did some more digging. The picture title indicates this was Einsatzgruppen A, a unit that operated in the Baltic states. If this was taken in 1941, I imagine these guys might be local to the region, when the Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians viewed the Nazis as liberators from Soviet occupation. Apparently there were cases of "Lithuanian Partisans" assisting the Nazis in eliminating Jews. They could also be German SS-men. I don't really know how to determine their nationality.

Need help on communist China by beechy2in history

[–]fmpossum 0 points1 point ago

I wish I could help more, but most of what I know about the early PRC are the disasters that accompanied agricultural and industrial reform along with the Great Leap Forward. I can tell you that the Chinese peasantry received land after the breakup of the landed estates (lots of hearts and minds to be won there!), but this land became state property by the late 50's, and then you have the Great Leap Forward, and all the suffering associated with it.

What does /r/Cigars think of CI's "Churchill's Iron Curtain" Sampler? by vweltinin cigars

[–]fmpossum 1 point2 points ago

I can weigh in on a couple of those, I suppose. I liked the 5V Series As I've smoked, but they didn't really jump out at me as anything brilliant. The LGCs aren't bad either. I really enjoyed the Gurkha Spec Ops. If I've smoked a CAO Black, I can't remember it. I know I've never had an RP Connecticut.

Churchill length cigars aren't too much my thing - they just take too damn long to smoke. That being said, it certainly looks like a decent sampler, and the price is right. For five dollars more, I'd probably go with this one though. I love each and every stick in that sampler.

Last weekend's smoke (well, one of them). Haven't seen any Aroma de Cuba love around here. by drchickenbeerin cigars

[–]fmpossum 1 point2 points ago

I love them, but I can never get them at the prices I want on CBid. My university B&M had trouble with an Ashton rep after buying a few boxes of these last year, so I can't even stock up locally for 9 months of the year... Looks like I need to stock up now!

Tip: pull zed out of town before you drop him by pz4in dayz

Magical leg-breakers are the worst. One zombie grabbed me at a deer stand, broke my leg, knocked me unconscious, and ate me. This happened in about three seconds.

Were you alone? I dont go to airfields without a team unless I'm in a suicidal mood and I want to see how many bandits I can drop Vietcong style with my Winchester. Balota is possible solo, but you really do have to watch out for player more.

Last night at the NW airfield, my friend and I chewed through mag after mag of AK and STANAG ammo on zombies that just kept coming. It was an utter disaster we finally escaped by sprinting the hell off the field. Thank god for grenades, both frag and smoke. I killed about 70 in less than ten minutes.

When I had to kill someone like this the first time, I was all sorts of worried. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Yesterday, some newbie with a Makarov chased me inland from the coast for five minutes, firing wildly at me. Sometimes you just have to shoot a person, especially if that guy presents a direct or even an indirect threat.

I've chilled out a bit more recently, as I know where to get decent gear, and death doesn't really present a huge problem for me. That being said, it has been [0] days since I've killed a survivor, thanks to the aforementioned Makarov guy.

I've seen them climb up deer stand ladders, but I've seen huge swarms at the foot of control tower ladders. Perhaps its something to do with ladder height?

Why I don't buy the "CoD noob" theory. by Bucky_Oharein dayz

[–]fmpossum 1 point2 points ago

For a while, I whined about the CoD noobs thing. Then I thought about it a bit more, and remembered another large, almost-lawless sandbox - EVE Online.

Before Goon and company showed up (pardon if you don't know what I'm talking about, but they were a bunch of people from SomethingAwful who essentially decided to change the rules of war), EVE was full of "honorable space samurai". Nowadays, things are different, to say the least. Goon and friends just knocked down the main trade hub and dealt the economy quite a blow. A mineral that was selling for pennies when I played is now selling for around 25 spacebucks.

Multiplayer sandbox games are malleable - it's a sandbox, after all. Someone can build a sandcastle, and someone can knock it down. The first person can then write "FAK U" in his urine next to the other person's castle in revenge. Unless Rocket lets people ban and kick from their servers based on their own rules (which I really hope doesn't happen, for the record), trigger-happy survivors are going to remain trigger-happy survivors, because as you said, there's currently almost no downside (and soon there will be absolutely none) to killing another survivor, unless he has friends nearby.

The PvP combat in DayZ is really awesome, whether it's against bandits or survivors. There's a ton of tension, and the feeling of awesome relief after victory (or the feeling of "maybe next time..." after death) really made me wonder why I had been avoiding it for so long.

Your strategy works pretty well, I used it for a while to get rid of my atrocious humanity after a week of raiding. As for getting it, I suppose that it's a survivor by survivor thing. Nowadays I group with a few other guys and raid the airfields, as there's more challenge to be found against a bunch of guys with AKs than against newbies in Zeleno. Though it did teach me a lot about offensive stealth.

[–]fmpossum 0 points1 point ago

I should have defined raiding better. I usually find its killing for the sake of killing. You said yourself that you're going after people with better gear, so that's banditry to me. If you were shooting everything on sight and trying to find places to do so, and not particularly care about the loot, I'd say that's raiding.

There's banditry, and what I'll call raiding. Banditry is when you shoot a man for his beans. Many people do this. Some targets are worth ambushing and killing, some are not. That's just how it goes in a world like DayZ, and I see nothing wrong about it in the context of the game.

Then, there's raiding. I used to be a raider. Being a raider is like being a post-apocalyptic Atilla the Hun. You run into a grocery store with a blazing AK while mic-spamming battlecries into sidechat, not because the people inside have beans, but because you saw them in the grocery store and by God, they're going to die today. Then, after you finish off the zombies and wait for the narcochemical cocktail of serotonin and dopamine from the rush of the kill to clear out of your brain, you check to see if they had anything on them. No beans? No bullets? No map? Hell, who cares? You're a raider! You'll always have more prey!

Did I consider myself a CoD/BF style FPS player? No, not really. I've been playing Arma for a while now, and I'm not generally kill-hungry in most competitive FPS games that I've played recently. But DayZ honestly gives better rewards for killing than the point and class based shooters. I don't want 100 xp and a new gun flashlight. I don't necessarily want that guy's stuff. I want the satisfaction of knowing that I killed a guy who was just as likely to kill me, and that I survived. Fighting in CoD is like playing penny poker. Yeah, you can win and lose, but you don't lose much, and you don't care about losses, and you hardly care about winnings either. DayZ is like playing for much larger sums of cash. The "real" consequences of death in DayZ means that life is precious, and fighting and killing in DayZ means you've gambled in a game where the stakes are far higher and you've won. It's the same reason that people like gambling.

TL;DR: Some people view killing in DayZ as the ultimate game of chance/skill, and derive immense visceral satisfaction from it, nature or history of the game be damned.

Padilla Achilles - anyone tried one of these? by ianmasseyin cigars

[–]fmpossum 1 point2 points ago

The Achilles is a pretty good stick. I don't know if I'd seek them out on their own, but if I get them in a sampler I don't mind them at all! I've found that the Padilla 68 is the best "bargain" stick from Padilla, especially when CI puts twenty count boxes of robustos up for $40.

First real haul. Heard good things, but I've only tried the Java. Thoughts? (sorry for crappy cell picture) by TippMann21in cigars

[–]fmpossum 1 point2 points ago

That's quite a haul! You're off to a great start! I'm a big fan of the CAO Brazilia and the Undercrown. I personally prefer the 5V gold to the gold maduro, though. Dominican Cohibas aren't really my thing, especially at the price I usually find them at in B&Ms. I've never had the Acid Def Sea or the Gurkha Triple Ligero. You can't go wrong with the Java either.

Like YaDamnSkippy said, keep infused cigars away from uninfused ones. It's not quite as bad with the ones you have (never ever ever put an Acid 1400cc in your humidor unless you're at gunpoint), but it might be worth it to either smoke those sooner or store them in a tupperdor. Can you tell I'm paranoid?
