Need an advice on a good deal for a phone plus internet package. Not TV. by Codename-Agent-47in UKFrugal

[–]flowithego 0 points1 point ago

I live on a newly developed area in a prestigious borough, the building is fresh (1 year old) and the exchange is about 1-2 mile away. I got bumped up to ADSL2 and that barely improved my speed to 3.5mb. Speed estimates on Be* and Sky versus Plusnet are significantly higher, and Plusnet's estimate is more or less spot on.

I mean, it's kind of ridiculous that my mobiles 3G connection is faster than my home broadband... Meh

Plusnet's good old honest broadband from Yorkshire is actually pretty awesome when it comes customer service.

In fact, even if logical_lemur isn't near the end of his contract, he can still call them and say "I find it very unfair that you're giving new customers a better deal than me." and I'm pretty sure they'll upgrade.

I just wish the speeds were better.

I was on the 60 gb tariff. Call and and ask to cancel (if you're anywhere near the end of your contract) because you found a cheaper unlimited offer from sky. They'll immediately offer you a cheaper and unlimited offer.

What's the difference between DSL, DSL2 and LLU may I ask? Does it differ in speeds? Im on Plusnet DSL2 and my speeds are awful, Sky is apparently LLU and offered faster speeds, but Murdoch.

FB doesn't give you anything to copy or paste.

Have you ever used their Ad Platform? You prepare a campaign, pick your demographic and Facebook targets those for you. That is in essence the only information being "sold". You're not given a spreadsheet of 25-40 y/o football fans from Minnesota who have erectile dysfunction, you're just enabled to "reach" them via ads.

I think you got it all wrong. Facebook doesn't sell excel sheets of user data, rather it let's you access or reach specific users according to their data, through them.

This PM is pushing for total ISP filtering unless you ring up your ISP and tell them to remove it. Let her know it should be the other way round! by w1ll1amzin unitedkingdom

Just sent her one as well. I'm curious whether she'll reply too!

Here's the speech,

Hi,

I am a concerned citizen, a digital native, as well as a productive member of society who would like to participate in the digital debate.

I've recently been made aware of your push for filtering the internet on ISP level and was wondering how exactly you're planning to put in motion such a difficult feat, as well as your level of expertise in the matter. In your "Meet Andrea" section it has caught my eye that you used to work in the Financial sector, I'm wondering how that experience ties in with your push for filtering the internet on ISP level.

The fact of the matter is, this will be a futile attempt at gaining control of neglected children's online habits. Children born in the digital age (digital natives) are so much more adept at bending the rules than digital migrants (older people who were introduced to the digital world later on in their life), and I have no doubts that these digital natives will outsmart such attempt to control their online habits.

I also can't help but think this gives way too much power and control to the government.

Instead, I believe we should push our resources, our energy and time for better digital education, as well as rebuilding the long lost art of parenting skills.

In your "Meet Andrea" section, you also mention that you would like to see "parents responsible for their children" and that "A government imposing beliefs from above is an out of date method of politics".

Let's do that then shall we?

Looking forward to your reply regarding this matter.

Have a good day, and thank you for your work in representing the people in the Parliament.

I firmly believe she doesn't have a clue about ISP level filtering. In fact, I'm a digital native (born on the internet) yet even I know very little about the technicalities behind it all, but can tell it's a difficult feat.

It's rather quaint that she used to work in the Financial sector, ie; clueless about technology, and in her Meet Andrea section she says;

Andrea would like to see ....... parents responsible for their children. A government imposing beliefs from above is an out of date method of politics.....

Great, let's do that then?

Ah, man. Salmon or lamb? The question of my life. Seriously, can we just not have both!?

Oh yes, this! Simple recipe, slow cook in juice with onion and potatoes, season with oregano and salt and pepper. Make sure you suck the white middle bit. mmmmmnomnom.

See, when I was proposed this question, I took it as pick one type of meat for the rest of your life. Contemplated salmon for a bit, but I'd flat out choose lamb.

Motherfuckin lamb-chops, lamb shoulder roasts, diced lamb kebabs in the Anatolian style, peel off the bone goodness. I can not grow tired of it, it is superior, finer textured, fully flavoured meat. It is so distinct for me, and although I usually hate animal fat, I drool over lamb fat, oh man.

However, if it's an animal, AND its produce for the rest of my life(as the title suggests), I'd have to go for cow, it's way more versatile and nutritious.

What happens to internet companies such as google when/if adblocking plugins become standard in internet browsers? by Tzeentch99in investing

[–]flowithego 1 point2 points ago

Why exactly do you think Chrome exists? So that Google has control over the existence of such technologies. Oh and same goes for Bing/IE, Safari/Apple. As for Mozilla, Google already pays them handsomely.

TLDR: They won't build it in.

Well, your point is somewhat the same as mine. I'm just saying, why would I lend it digitally, when I could just duplicate, and have access to the original copy while my friend borrows my duplicate digital copy.

And that it's not fair to compare creating a digital copy to a physical copy. I really don't think people don't do this because it's not good sport, it's just, basically, long to burn a DVD.

As cool an idea as it sounds, "lending" digital copies, I'm not sold on just yet.

I don't know whether it was panic attack or existential crisis/anxiety, but I had my "dark hour". The only thing that kept me closer to calm and sane was water. I don't know why, but I thought there must be a chemical imbalance that was causing my state, and that I was 70% water, so I kept drinking pints upon pints. I also stared out my window, watching the bees, doing the exact routine around the flowers for as long as summer went on, it was good to see some order when I felt nothing but chaos.

So yeah, drink water.
