Here's the reisub explanation: http://kember.net/articles/reisub-the-gentle-linux-restart/

I had to write down the sequence to be able to remember it.

I've had similar crashes to the symptoms you describe (I think almost all associated with flash), but not in recent ubuntu versions. I don't remember whether reisub was effective or not with them.

There are dozens of launchpad issues on the same bug. You're right, I glossed the issue - having had a fairly stable KDE (I got desperate enough to research & tame the godawful default font setup) for about a week, it suddenly started crashing also. But, it seems, less often than Unity did.

XFCE definitely doesn't crash in the same way, but it's too primitive for my liking. Ubuntu 2d seems to be pretty stable, but it has its own bugs (IIRC associated with dual monitors) which drove me to try the KDE route.

That said most of the glitches I've encountered have been X restarts; the few locks I've had were not kernel locks, i.e. I could alt sysrq reisub to reboot.

Now if only nouveau didn't suck and the binary nvidia driver didn't cause random X crashes every few hours when compiz/unity is running.

Tips for safely getting rid of fruit fly infestation? by chthonicalin gardening

How big are the seedlings? I grow mine under transparent dixie cups, which prevents the flies from moving between plants, and seems to keep the population minimal.

Asiatic Lilies by dave31175in gardening

Goddam deer rolled through my backyard the other night and chomped the buds off all of the lilies. Luckily they didn't see a couple in the front yard, which have just bloomed.

It always helps when transplanting to use this friendly Fungus. by horsekeepein gardening

I am far from an expert (just have been learning more about this recently). I'd consult Paul Stamet's books for a definitive answer.

That said, mycos partner with certain plants (e.g. woody perennials - this looks like a good resource here: http://www.mycorrhizae.com/mycocyclopedia/) - simply planting and keeping happy a variety of the "right" plants will create the environment that the mycos need to spread.

[–]flavor8 3 points4 points ago

Also, unless the soil has been totally trashed, and assuming that it has been hosting myco-partnering plants (e.g. grass tends to encourage bacteria vs fungi), it's likely to have a myco network already (either thriving, or dormant but restorable). So it may not be necessary to add supplements; you may be able to rely on your "native" fungi species. (There is no evidence that I'm aware of that introducing "exotic" fungi via supplements into your garden is necessarily a bad thing, but we still have a lot to learn about fungi.)

Not sure what you're referring to, but I've been using postgres for production webapps since 2007. Also there are various commercial offerings based on postgres which rely on its JDBC driver (repackaged in minor ways). Never had issues with it.

I have horrible soil... by Truth_hungryin gardening

[–]flavor8 0 points1 point ago

If you haven't read it, I recommend picking up a copy of Gaia's Garden, which has an excellent chapter devoted to soil building. The Soul of Soil, and Teaming With Microbes, are also good (and reasonably accessible) soil books.

As for your question, what about just dumping a 50/50 mix (compost/soil) onto the beds to create volume (and to give the worms a place to play)? You could then put a light top mulch of leaves (preferably pre-shredded with your lawn mower) or straw on top.

Do you have more seed? Might as well plant it all out now if so.

r/gardening, I'm trying to grow comfrey and desperately need advice. by girls_have_wingsin gardening

[–]flavor8 1 point2 points ago

I'm surprised it can be grown (well) in a pot - one of the reasons I just bought a bunch (which are going in this weekend) is for its deep roots / general dynamic accumulator attributes. So maybe just try putting it in the ground?

Also from what I've read you definitely shouldn't make tea from it.

question about removing TONS of weeds by phaqueuein gardening

[–]flavor8 0 points1 point ago

I spent an hour weeding a couple weekends ago, a day after it had rained, and ended up with a pile of weeds about 3' high and probably the same in diameter, which is now cooking its way towards being compost (I added some leaves that I gathered from the woods in a rough attempt to balance the "greens" and "browns".) In a couple of months that'll be broken down & super rich in nutrients, and ready to spread back onto the bed to feed the plants I kept. Speaking of which, when I weed I always distinguish between "weeds" and "volunteers", where the definition of volunteer is "it looks like it might do something interesting".

So I'm definitely not in the "spray it" or "cover it" camps. Spend an hour out there a few weekends in a row on your hands and knees, and work it over section by section. Get some good gardening gloves (I like the blue rubber coated cloth gloves) to avoid getting scrapes or stings on anything with defense mechanisms. As a bonus you'll get a good suntan. :)
