Question to Those That Own Their Own Shops by heyitsconnorin Coffee

[–]fjwright04 1 point2 points ago

i'm also twenty and i'd like to own a shop. I am majoring in entrepreneurship at my university. I am working in a coffee shop right now. I've written at least five different coffee based business plans for competition, one of which won. SO.... hear me out...

Definitely get a job in the coffee industry first and just learn under someone for awhile. Try to get picked up by a local cafe, check on you application more than once, and get the job. Learn the business end, more of the coffee end, and get some experience. Save money for your shop while you do that.

if you can't wait, then you can take a lot our on credit cards as a last resort. If venture capital and angel investors aren't showing up... then you can take out a lot on credit. It is only a good idea in some cases, but i've seen it work out well. i've also seen it go bad, you better know what you're doing. You really just need friends, family, and fools to help you start up. As investors and potential partners.

if you take on a partner, have a ' push pull ' clause in your contract, and definitely have a contract. This clause is where if you want to buy him out, you offer him his buy out, if he rejects it, you can take it and leave on your own instead.

So that's my caffeinated rant, comment for more. haha

Thoughts on decaf by BasketOfKittensin Coffee

[–]fjwright04 1 point2 points ago

Swiss water is the way to go for decaf. Because caffeine is the chemical it is, when you take it out of coffee, it will actually be less bitter. However, the rest of the flavours will be more muted as well through the process. So, go for Swiss water. It'll never be as good, but you do what you have to.

An 'off-to-college' gift by kdelamontin Coffee

[–]fjwright04 4 points5 points ago

keurigs... i've bought two of them. Two higher end models actually. One for each of my parents. I spend a lot of time visiting these parents of mine. Also, i am a barista at a local coffee shop where we roast all our coffee on site. Also, I am developing a competition routine. I am kinda qualified here.

I dont understand why your response their was so blunt. Keurig's have a great convenience factor, and they are aesthetically pleasing, but the OP mentioned high quality coffee in the post, and that is where they lack my friend. i'm sorry

electric kettle will be the big gift he'll always use. they are crucial to dorm room coffee.... and after that? aeropress, french press, or if you ask me... the clever. it is amazing, and incredibly under appreciated

You guys might like to hear. I met with Jason Dominy yesterday who has done a bit of testing on it. He is third party and confirmed that it will be on par with the Silvia. I am really excited
