A Frenchman stranded in the desert build a bike out of his Citroën 2CV by Naruhodoin DIY

Fake. I can tell by the speedo, and from having seen a lot of car-turned-in-to-a-motorcycle hoaxes in my day.

how are sites inaccessible other than through a tor browser? by spongeratin onions

[–]finite 1 point2 points ago

That is the page about setting up a hidden service; the page explaining how they work is at https://www.torproject.org/docs/hidden-services.html.en (subtly different URL; completely different content).

See https://www.torproject.org/docs/hidden-services.html.en for a high-level overview of how Tor Hidden Services work, and follow the links on that page if you want to read the full specifications with all of the technical details.

BTW, hidden services actually can be accessed by people (and robots like Googlebot) without using Tor directly, via a proxy service called tor2web which runs Tor for you. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.onion#tor2web

Note that if you access hidden services using tor2web, the location of the service remains hidden but you (the person accessing a site) will not be anonymized at all - your ISP, the tor2web operators, or the hidden service itself could correlate your IP address with what you're looking at. So, it is much better to use the Tor Browser Bundle.

Nice how you blurred the host's name in the facebook screenshot, but then left the URLs to the invite which contains all the details :)

Wikipedia drops Google Maps for OpenStreetMap (and an update for the iOS app.) by HardwareLustin wikipedia

Because I don't want the sensor-laden computer in my pocket to be remotely controllable, I don't sign in to a Google account on my phone and I try to minimize the amount of closed-source software I run.

I don't have any of Google's proprietary apps (YouTube, GMail, etc).

Should I be worried!? by donutmonkeyin privacy

LOL, I don't know what PeerBlock is but in your screenshot it says it is blocking 4,294,814,842 IPs. There are only 232 = 4,294,967,296 possible IP addresses, so that means you're not blocking a mere 152,454 IPs. What is the purpose of this?

Patentology: Five Reasons Why Ars Technica’s Savaging of CSIRO is Appalling by spacehuntin australia

There is no such thing as a non-abusive use of patents. Even in the extremely rare cases where actual inventors reap a significant portion of the profits from them, it is still an affront to common decency to use the force of law to prevent other people from being able to make things.

I wish they would upload the .apk to github, so people who use Android but don't have Google Market could use the app without having to compile it themselves!
