The default alt-tab behaviour drove me crazy too, especially because it would be constantly taking me to another window from the same application on a different workspace. You're right about the constant time lookup with a hash, that's the entire purpose of using a hash. Take a look at Virindi's post to see how you could have used a hash in this situation. You were pretty close to getting it right, I think that trying to make the hash constant lead to some confusion.

If you're dead set on using a constant, check out the use constant perldoc (linked in my post above). Specifically, look at the weekdays example that the authors show, the code they show sort of solves your problem.

Ah, constants. :)

Constants work slightly differently than regular variables in perl: you don't have to preface them with a sigil ($).

I think that you are also not creating the data structure that you think you are creating --- you're creating an array of hashes rather than a plain hash.

If you're not trying to count instances of those symbols, then I think you might be able to get away with using a plain array. Take a look at the perldoc for use constant, the page has a nice example of how to use a constant array.

If you are trying to count instances of those symbols, then I think you probably don't want to use a constant.
