Surprisingly enough, it's supposed to be pretty good for the style (German/Bohemian Pilsener). The early ratebeer and beeradvocate reviews are rather positive, and they tend to enjoy tearing apart gimmicky beers and light lagers. To be fair, there aren't all that many reviews yet, but it looks like these high profile investors may have found a competent brewer.

I agree with all of that. Rare and Vanilla are excellent trade bait. Unfortunately, I've already traded away my last bottles, not that I ever had all that many. I just meant that I'd prefer to drink the proffered beers.

I'm still looking for King Henry. I wasn't trading when it came out, and I've been lazy about getting it since. Other trades keep popping up - just got a growler of Iron Hill Kryptonite, which was really tasty - and I don't like having more than a couple open at once. I should probably put up an ISO, before its value gets too crazy.

I realize that the value of Rare just keeps going up and up, but this still seems like a pretty generous offer to me. Perhaps, I'm wrong about that - I haven't tried to trade for Rare since it was available in stores - but I'd very much prefer those two JP bottles and two Parabola b1's to a Rare.

As far as I know, there has never been a beer purity law in the Czech Republic that prevents the use of rice. I don't think there's any Czech purity law with a resemblance to the Reinheitsgebot, etc., really. Also, it's rather unlikely that Budweiser uses more rice than barley. That probably would be much more trouble than it would be worth. Here's a supposedly close clone recipe.

Just tried Linchpin. I was pretty underwhelmed, actually. The hops seemed sorta bland, and there was a bit too much spice or something for me.

On the other hand, I tried that Mikkeller-Grassroots collab, Wheat is the New Hops, last night, and it's excellent. It's all Citra tropical fruitiness and brett funk with some nice wheat in the background. I had kinda given up on Mikkeller IPAs, but that one's a winner.

I think it's a fine idea. It just takes a lot of work to start a beer store. You might want to go check out The Bruery's store - Provisions. They do tasting classes and whatnot. It's down in Orange, and I've heard that it's well run. If you're ever up in the Bay Area, Beer Revolution is a great beer store/bar and has done some tastings/classes before, though I'm not sure if they're still doing that. Also, K&L's Redwood City location sometimes does tastings, as does a San Francisco store called Plumpjack - I'm not sure how much BJCP-ish stuff goes on. I'm sure there are other places in the country that do similar stuff, not that it takes away from your potential plan at all, and I don't know of any that focus too strongly on the educational aspect.

As for LA stores, I haven't been in awhile, but Beverage Warehouse seemed alright. Unfortunately, the Beeradvocate LA guide seems oddly out of date or something, so you'll have to look through the general CA store listings - LA's beer store listing should start on that page.

I kinda agree with Cable Car Amber. It's not a great beer by any stretch of the imagination, but for a faux craft beer made by Genesee and sold by a shitty private label company, it's entirely decent. It doesn't really help that rb and ba have it listed as an American Amber/Red, when it's really closer to a Marzen.

That doesn't really make sense. In particular, BA scores are generally too high, in my opinion. There's plenty of room to criticize the top-rated lists, and there certainly are various biases on ba and rb, but the average scores for common craft beers are mostly quite generous.

Just to let you know, Darkness '07 is a big time whale. Along with Kate '06 and Dark Lord '04, it's one of the three hardest stouts to land in beer trading. You'll need a much, much bigger bargaining chip than anything in your FT bottle list - I'm assuming that Cantillon isn't Don Quijote or something.

I can't find sources now, but if I recall correctly, Jupiler is about twice as popular in Belgium as Bud Light is in the USA. It accounts for ~40% of beer sales in Belgium, while Stella Artois is ~8%. Of course, the two don't really compete, and Stella is actually the larger brand (by a fair bit, I think). The merger of the two brewers was the first in the string of mergers/takeovers that led to InBev. Basically, they use Jupiler as their big domestic brand and Stella as the export.

It's quite good. Not my favorite Unibroue beer but it's right in the mix. Since you've never tried it before, I would definitely drink one soon. I don't think there's any real point in aging it, unless, of course, you know that you like aged Unibroue beers. That said, it's not a bad choice to age because you won't be out all that much money if you end up disliking it.

Growler fills are only allowed at breweries/brewpubs, and they must use their own branded growlers. They've even denied a couple efforts to make things a bit better, like creating a multi-brewery growler.

Does Redwood City K&L regularly stock Alpine, KRBC and other stuff from the Hollywood location? Or do you have to order online for will call? I know that they don't list their entire inventory online, so I've been tempted to start driving down there to check it out occasionally.

Whole Foods has excellent prices on beer, and the SF locations have decent to very good selections - the Potrero Hill location is best. There are only a handful of bottles on that Wine Affairs list that I haven't seen at WF (nothing great, either), and most of it is currently available. They probably have the best prices in the city for the higher end stuff (or, at least, they're tied with BevMo but take better care of their beer and their average quality is higher). I don't buy all that much food there, but I buy a lot of beer.

$4.50 is the normal BevMo/WF price for Cappucino Stout. Just look up WTF on BevMo's site. They use the same SKU for all of the seasonal bombers from Lagunitas. Even the more expensive stores don't go more than 50 cents to a dollar over that.

I could also just bring one over to split with you. It would be less amusing but probably more enjoyable. I've seen a couple reports that '07 is starting to get past its peak, so I should probably do something with my '08s soon.

That sounds interesting. It makes me think of High Water Campfire Stout, which is a new beer in Northern California that uses graham crackers, chocolate malt and marshmallow flavor. It's kinda like drinking a milk stout with marshmallows in it. Anyway, it might be fun to pair it with your beer s'mores, though it would mean a ton of marshmallow flavor.
