TIL that during WWII, the silk of black widows was used to make crosshairs in guns used by the U.S. Army, as it is stronger than steel or platinum wire of the same thickness. by iDrinkYourShakein todayilearned

In your example, you have the two mixed up. Voltage is the potential difference between two points for a given charge, akin to the speed of the object hitting you; Amperage is the number of electrons moving, similar to how heavy said object is.

As someone who has only ever had Win7 Pro (free from university), I assure you it comes with Media Centre. It was Vista Pro that was lacking it iirc.

AMD 'Bulldozer' gets an Update from Microsoft by westtowelin hardware

[–]f0000 0 points1 point ago

Yes, overall it is much easier. Once you've written a compiler/interpreter for a new ISA, that's it. Most software can now either run on it, or be compiled to run on it. Overall that's a lot easier than modifying every bit of software to become extremely threaded. Hell, most software can't even be written to work with more than 2-3 threads, and for bulldozer to really shine, you need closer to 8.

[–]f0000 -1 points0 points ago

Have you ever written multi-threaded software? Its freaking hard. Getting it to work properly with > 4 threads is really freaking hard. Hell, most software nowadays barely uses 2-3 threads, and that's not likely to change for a very long time.

Simply taking an existing codebase and compiling it for another architecture is dead simple, or in the case of an interpreted language all you need is an interpreter that works with that ISA.

Also, once you optimize a compiler, it works that way for a good chunk of software compiled with it; to optimize software by hand, you need to change things for every single program. Guess which is preferable.

You're right. Recompiling software for another architecture is often more simple than making something heavily threaded and almost entirely int-based.

There have been plenty of server benchmarks featuring bulldozer and it's done just as poorly. Even if you are right and the software just isn't written well for it, a cpu architecture that requires pretty much everything to be rewritten for it to do well is still a massive failure; see: Itanium.

I just re-read the title and realized I meant to write "384-bit memory bus".

Great chocolate alternative... by deniall83in Paleo

[–]f0000 1 point2 points ago

Its like Schroedinger's cat, but with sugar: when left alone, the chocolate both does and does not have less sugar than an orange, only when it is consumed does the waveform collapse and it takes on only one of the two possibilities.

it doesn't support n on the 5GHz band; it only supports it on the 2.4GHz band... and I realize its not coming officially to north america, but neither is the n9. But at least with the n9, you can buy it unlocked and still use it on t-mobile/wind/etc.

re: the bands supported, can't tell if trolling or just uninformed... just in case, w-cdma is what pretty much all hspa networks use... and they left out the AWS band (1700MHz) required for t-mobile in the US and all of the smaller providers in Canada. This is a huge omission for a lot of people in North America.

As for the ff-camera, its supported just fine in mango; just no applications use it yet. Skype among others is coming soon, so that'll change long before this hardware gets old, and is a pretty glaring omission again, especially considering cheaper WP7 phones such as the HTC Radar have it.

Finally, wireless a support also means that it supports n on the 5GHz band, which is important for people who still have hardware that only supports b or g on the 2.4GHz band on the network. Even if you don't fit into that category, you'll likely still see better performance on the 5GHz band since there is a lot less interference from other devices on similar wave-lengths. (bluetooth, a good chunk of cordless phones among others all use the 2.4GHz band)
