How often do you want to quit? by benpatientin Design

[–]ezekielonearth 56 points57 points ago

Hey man. I understand how you feel and can relate to where you are at. I think this is something a lot of designers face at one point or another in their career. I know I have. My best advice would be to not get yourself down, because that just leads to nowhere. The first few times things like this happened to me, I got a bit depressed and kind of just went with it an onto the next one. Once it happened again, I began to rethink my process to understand why the client/ reviewer was coming back to me with these kinds of, to me, mindless comments. After thinking a bit about it, and continuing research, I developed my own set of weapons to combat their dumbass comments. Instead of just choosing a color or a style I liked, I found market research and other case studies supporting why that color/ design element/ typeface/ whatever was specific and relevant to my target demographic. So when the creative director/ reviewer came around and said to make it blue because he likes blue, I could say well I made it red because of these (have sources ready) specific bullet points. This not only helped protect my original designs, but it also made a way more convincing case on why that design is good. The more and more I did this, the more and more I became trusted and those dumbass reviews became less and less often. Sure, it does get stressful at times, and yes, I have had conversations about it that got heated at some point. But I always stood my ground because I had sound research and material to back up my point.

TL;DR Perseverance and knowledge are the only weapons we have in this world. Use them wisely. Educated choices are good choices, and standing by your choices in design reviews makes the difference.

Hope this helps you out!

Need to construct a device that switches power from one source to several components in a series. by ezekielonearthin electronics

Interesting, yes a ready made one may be best for me at the moment until I can fully grasp the needs of my project. Thanks again!

Thanks for the reply! That gives me a great starting point. I think a lot of it is over my head, but looking into the Arduino Relay shield, this sounds like it will do what I want to accomplish. I can always scale down for tests and work up to having my exact desired result. Thanks again.

Are you referring to the vignette? The smooth noise is pretty easy, I usually go filter > noise > add noise then add the proper amount to taste, then filter > blur > gaussian blur to smooth it out. It helps to do this on a new layer, make it a smart object so you can go back and edit the blur and noise levels as smart filters if you think it's to much/ to little then put the smart layer on multiply. Hope this helps.

hey r/design, i could use some direction/advice with a design. by brainfart4in Design

These are pretty cool. And its a good start but nothing here really speaks to what the site is. This is not a bad thing, but a good exercise I like to do, is start sketching icons, graphics, whatever that really embody what the brand does. I'll usually start off making a word list. Just start writing words that relate to databases, professors, colleges, photos, slideshows etc. Then a next step would be to start sketching some of those items. The purpose of this is to refine an idea to help you make a more informed decision on a typeface or brand mark. Things always hold together much better when you have a concept you can discuss with your client and can describe why you did something that is deeper and more meaningful than "It looks nice".

Hope this helps and good luck!

Need commercial ideas for a bacon cracker by drawdelovein Design

[–]ezekielonearth 1 point2 points ago

what kind of commercial are you going for? Video, motion graphics? Both?

Something like these guinness commercials are pretty easy to make in after effects (to an extent) and can translate well to your concept http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DPKf7y1F-Q

A stop motion of a taboo love story between a cracker and some bacon, thus creating bacon crackers could also be a cool project idea that would be feasible with minimal studio gear.

30-60 seconds is a pretty long commercial, remember to use only what you need. When it gets to long it will get boring.

Hope this helps!

Problem with CS5 Arrow Tool is only moving objects with Nudge by veloBOSSin Design

[–]ezekielonearth 0 points1 point ago

I've had a similar problem. How large is your file? I run into this if I have a file that takes a ton of ram and is jam packed with smart objects. The only solution I have found is find a way to non-destructively (or maybe not if its not important) condense the file. (rasterize smart objects, get rid of unused layers, that sort of thing)

Any critique for a struggling graphic designer? I just started my solo career this week. by jjandrein Design

Hey Man,

It's really cool that you started to go out on your own. Like the comment before me, I agree it is very rewarding, but also very difficult. My main advice would be that you need to stay driven and motivated. It will be a never ending battle for you. The more you fight the better you will do.

I'm not sure if you are really looking for design notes here, but I can give a few. One main thing I would say is think about the presentation of your work a bit more. Having a list of logos and design work can be effective, but it doesn't speak much to how you solved someone's problem. It simply shows what you have done and not why. Focusing on a particular project, what the clients problems were and describing how you overcame those design challenges and developed an effective solution is a much better way to get off the ground.

I think it may be helpful to look at other portfolio sites to see what your competition is like. Even though other companies/ designers are not in your geographical area, they will still be competing against you online. Browse around, get inspired, develop a plan, and begin there. I think you have a pretty good thing going here, you just need to bring it all together.

A thing that may be extremely valuable to you is to begin with a template website that already has a lot of the functionality you need. And you don't really have to know a whole lot about coding or design get a good site going. I often use and recommend wordpress themes from http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress/creative they have a great user base and are generally pretty good with answering questions and helping you out.

All in all, I would say keep on keeping on man. Don't get discouraged and keep pushing. You need to put in a lot, and it won't be easy, but you can do it. People succeed everyday.
